Axel Stern berg, about 20 years old, was discovered by Under Sheriff Morden and Deputy Sheriff Harvey L. Moreland, In the brush near the town of Linnton yesterday. Mr. Miller, the section foreman at Linn ton, appeared at the Sheriff's office at 10 o'clock yesterday morning and report ed the discovery of a bloody hat and a pool of blood. Messrs. Morden and Moreland proceeded immediately to the scene in a buggy. They found Stornberg staggering about in the brush in a dazed condition trying to And some water to drink. He hnd evi dently Just arisen from where he had ben Is'lng. When questioned by the of ficers concerning what had happened to him, he answered In a vague sort of a way. He said he fell from a Northern Pacific train and then proceeded to re late that he had been crazy for some time, and somebody had dragged him into the brush. He told his name and gave his residence as 767 Hood street. He then collapsed completed, and no further statement could be procured from him. He was placed In the buggy and re moved with all possible speed to St. "Vincent's Hospital where Drs. Wilson and Hamilton performed an operation. He suffered from a depressed fracture of the skull, and his condition was pronounced precarious. Three Persons Reported Missing. The police have been engaged for sev eral days In an investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Miss Maude Smith, whose parents reside on Cherry street. Mount Tabor. She is 17 years old and is of light complexion. Her mother reported the matter to headquarters yes terday and. detectives are working on the case. J, H. Lush. untlL Monday an inmate of the Mount Tabor Sanitarium, is missing, and the case has been called to the attention of the police. He Is said to be an imbecile, although being a giant In stature. He is 6 feet and 1 Inch In height and weighs 200 pounds. Jesse Colby, aged Jl years, was reported as missing yesterday by his father. He has not been seen since Monday morn ing. Peace Envoys May Visit Portland. Peace envoys of Japan to the conference to be held with representatives of Rus e sla next month may visit Portland on their way to Washington.
