12 THE MORNING OKJCiiUxlA-V, SATURDAY, JULY 15, 1905. NIOBE STARTS FOR ENGLAND WITH BIG LOAD. Btcamcr Snndhurst Expected to Leave Tonight With 3,500,000 Feet of Lumber for China. Not a day passes without a lumber laden vessel leaving Portland. The ma jority are coasting schooners taking lum ber to California, but one big load for England started on Its long passage yes terday, and another for China will proba bly leave tonight. Early yesterday morning the German bark NIobe left down, loaded with 1,682.000 feet of lumber, taken on at the North Pacific mill. At the same mill a cargo for South Africa Is going Into the hold of the British ship Pythomene. By tonight the remainder of the cargo of 3,500,000 feet should be on board the big freighter Sandhurst, lying at the Victoria dolphins. She will leave down as soon as possible. Taku Bar, China, Is her dertl xiatlon. The barkentine Portland cleared at the Custom-House yesterday with 578.000 feet of lumber, loaded at the Inman-Poulsen mill. A larger coasting cargo Is on the big schooner Virginia, which also cleared with 700,000 feet. She goen to San Fran cisco, while the Portland goes to San Pedro. The Niobe made the remarkably fast time of 22 days from Japan to Portland, and her cargo, which will probably be deliv ered at London, will be hurried to Fal mouth for orders with all dispatch. Newport Back In a Week. At 10 o'clock last night the steamer Newport reached the Columbia dock from Coos Bay, Coqullle River and Yaqulna Bay, making the rornd trip from Portland In seven days. It was expected when the Newport went on the run that ten days would be required, as slow time Is neces sarily made In entering and leaving the small ports along the coast. On board the Newport are hides, cedar and hardwood, and a general cargo picked up at the ports where other steamers sel dom call. Domestic and Foreign Ports. ASTORIA. July 14.
