WHITE FOREMAN AND SEVEN
CHINESE ARE KILLED.
Mixing Plant of the Giant Powder
Company at Giant, Cnl., Is
Destroyed.
OAKLAND, Cai., July 13. The giant '
powder mixing plant of the Giant Pow
der Company, at Giant, Contra Costa
County, was destroyed by an explo
sion at 7:40 this morning. Eight lives
wore lost, one white man and seven
Chinese. Tne dead:
WILLIAM H. DYER, foreman of the plant.
50 years old.
SEVEN CHINESE.
One Chinese was injured. He was
working on the outside of the plant
and the forge of the explosion sent
him about 20 feet into the Bay of. San
Francisco. After dropping into the
water, he walked to shore over the
mud flats, having sustained a few
scratches on the face, a burned right
hand and a fractured left arm.
The plant was a frame structure,
covered with lime. The property loss
will be about 510,000. The powder
works are located about five miles
north of Richmond. The mixing build
ing, where the explosion took place,
was located a quarter of a mile from
the powder works proper, and the lat
ter escaped damage.
Foreman Dyer and his seven Chinese
helpers had just begun work for the
day and since none in the building es
caped with his life, there is no reliable
information as to what caused the ex
plosion. There was an Immense quan
tity of chemicals in the mixing build
ing and the slightest carelessness
would easily result in destruction.
Two small warehouses, 20x20 feet, and
only a short distance from the main
mixing building, were also shattered.
The buildings are a ttal wreck.
Took Poison by Mistake.
ALBANY. Or., July 13. (Spccial.)-Mis
May Brundage, as a result of an over
dose of laudanum taken by mistake, nar
rowly escaped death In Albany today.
She had been taking medicine for. same
time, and In some manner the bottle
of laudanum was placed where her medi
cine had been kept. She took a large
amount of the deadly drug, but was saved
by the prompt administration of an
tidotes. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT.
