mESrOBNINGOREGOXra, 3IOXDAY, JUjOY 10, 1905. MINI SHOOT Companies F. H. and K. at the Butts. FAIR SCORES ARE MADE Oregon National Guard May Send Men to Seagirt to Compete With Other State Military Or ganizations at Targets. Companies F, H and K., O. X. G., had their final practice shoot at their range yesterday prior to their departure lor Camp Geartfart next Thursday morning. Evervthinc: considered, the boys did fairly wejl. although it la expected that during their seven days' stay at the seashore they will greatly Improve In their marks manship. Captain V7. I. Gould was in command of Company F. Captain Roy M. Doble of Company H and Captain Ryland O. Scott of Company K. Altogether about SO men participated in the shooting, and were very equally divided among the three companies. Company F only shot at 200 and 500-yards. while the other two military organizations indulged In prac tice over all three ranges-200, 300 and 500 yards. Captain Scott, of Company 3C, made some good scores at the different dis tance?, considering that it was his initial performance at the butts this year. He made 20 out of a possible 25 at 200 yards, and his marksmanship through out stamps him as likely to help repre sent the state at Seagirt, N. J. Sergeant Boytana and Corporal Sever, both of the same company, also made 20 each over the shorter range, and several of the boys scored 16 and IP. Sergeant Bird car ried off the honors at 200 yards by mak ing a total of 20. Captain Scott Is quite jubilant over the showing made by his men. and is confident that other com panies of the Third Infantry will have to hustle to keep up with them. Musician H. R. Cooley, of Company F, distinguished himself by making 30 at 600 yards, which was the high score of the day at the distance. Sergeant E. Crouch, and Privates I... C. Seltzer and V. F. Compton, also of Company F, secured 18, 17 and 17 respectively over the 500 yard range. The score of Company H was unobtain able, hence no accurate record of their shooting was available, but It is under stood that one of its men mafle 21 at 200 yards, and that several others were not far away. The objectionable feature of the range used by the local state military companies consists of a deep depression between the butts and the firing station. The wind sucks through it like a funnel, and has a tendency to drift the bullets of the small callbered Krag-Jorgensons several feet at BOO yards, and makes the marksmanship uncertain at the other ranges while there is any breeze.
