KAISER WINS SINGLE RACE His Meteor III Beats Hamburg by Small Margin Ailsa Outsails Prince Henry's Orion and Plays Tricks. IMPERIAL YACHT CLUB. Kiel. Ger many, June 23. American yachts, cither American-owned or American-built, made a fine showing today. There were four df them, and each won the race of her class. R. W; Goelet's Swan made a bad start and was last over the line, but she went straight through the fleet, gave a beauti ful example of seamanship and got right up to windward, and, returning away from the other yachts, finished four min utes 45 seconds ahead of the Thyra, which was second. The Capri came In third; time. 4:10:46; course, 22 miles. A good, strong breeze was blowing, and most of the boats put in at least one reef. Ailsa Beats Prince Henry. Prince Henry of Prussia, with Alison V. Armour on board, was to have sailed the Orion over a 33-mlle course, with no competition In her class. The Ailsa, al though not regularly entered, was Invited to sail against the Orion, and the repre sentative of the Ailsa's owner did so. The Ailsa crossed the line too soon, had to come back, and did something, fre quent enough in America, but which gave the Judges a scare. She made a turn around the starter's boat, almost touch ing her spars, and came up to windward. In the meantime the Orion was getting away fast. The Ailsa at the first turn was two minutes behind, at the second turn was about even, and at the third turn was 50 seconds ahead. She finished 1 minute and 10 seconds ahead of the Orion. Kaiser's Meteor III Wins. The Emperor's Meteor III was a minute behind the Hamburg at the start, and was 34 seconds behind at the first stake boat. She passed the Hamburg near the second turn, was 1 minute, 54 seconds ahead at the last turn, and finished some thing over three minutes ahead, or 1 min ute and 2 seconds corrected time. Emperor William was at the wheel of the Meteor III much of the time, and Was in very good humor, and had Am bassador Tower, Wilson Marshall, owner of the yacht Atlantic, and George Lauder, owner of the yacht Endymlon, who were among his guests, on board the yacht, hauling on ropes and assisting In trim ming sails. The Meteor III has been sharpened at both ends, and her keel has been deepened since last season, with the object of in creasing her speed. Some of the English crew who have sullcd In hef both before and lncc said they did not believe the alterations had helped her, and that is understood to be Skipper Barker's opin ion. But othors regard the Meteor Ill's performance today as rather better than hor previous work. Xnvnhoc Hus Easy Victory. The American-built Xavahoe beat the Comet over the same 33-mile course by 21 minutes. The schooner yachts Suzanne and Clara, owned respectively by O. Huldschlnsky and Max Gullleaume, had a luffing match all the way. They were practically even all the time, the Suzanne winning by scarcely more than "ten feet. Among the steamers following the race was the Princess Victoria, with the direc tors of the Hamburg-American Line and a large party on board. DODGING HIS CREDITORS Cnstro Creates New Ports to Divert Customs Revenue. WASHINGTON. June 23. The State Department has recolved official ad vices of the establishment of a cus tom-house at Carenero, 75 miles east of Cals, le Touara. Venezuela, by de cree of President Castro of that coun try, dated May 22. The action has aroused intense interest here, in view of the fact that It will very materially diminish the hypothecated customs revenues at La Guayra, just as the port of Tuerto Cabello was affected by the recent establishment of Tuca cas as a port of entry, and the re turns of which will be still further lessened by the expected opening of an adjacent custom-house at Ocumae del Costa. Thirty per cent of the customs rev enile of the ports of La Guayra and Puerto Cabello is pledged to the cred itor nations of Venezuela. The customs port of Carenero is the center of a famous cocoa-growing dis trict, the product of which has hither to been exported to the United States and Europe by -way of La Guayra. Shipments hereafter will be made dl roctly from the newly opened port. thereby seriously affecting the com mercial interests of La, Guayra. the present emporium. Six other custom houses have been established by ex ecutive decree within a few months. Unfrocked Priest Holds Church. CHICAGO, June 23.
