THE MORXTN'G OREGOXIAX, THURSDAY, JUN'E 22, 1905. 1? EGLiNE IN SUEUR Heavy imports of Raws Break New York Market. WEAK AND UNSETTLED Hops Steadlqr, but No Higher, Under Good Buying Demand Carload of Watermelons Received. Break In Chickens. SUGAR Break In raw sugar cause lower prices on refined. HOPS Active buying caueea lighter off-Tings. "WHEAT Trading restricted by lack of Fteamer space. BARLEY Market easier on Ireer of ferings. OATS Scarce and firm. EGOS Market advances to 20 cents. POULTRY Lowest price of season paid for Spring obickone. FRUIT Car of watermelons arrive. POTATOES New and old grades firmer. MEATS Veal too plentiful and weak. The New York sugar market hae been sen- ou-sly unsettled by the effort to force on It large quantities of raw ttugar. The result was a. decline in all parts of the country, the drop in his city amounting to 5 cent?. Some New York firms declined 20 cents and ethers 25 centa. The Taclfle Coast refineries all put their prices down 10 cents, but the Jobbers here cut that decline in half. The market continues, weak with an uncertain future. Many of the 'Portland firms are carry ing heavy stocks of eugar and, therefore, view the decline with anything but pleasure. The lost weekly .report of docks of raw rugar held on the Atlantic seaboard shewed :3G.$C0 tons, an compared with 215,71" tons a year ago. The differential between the ftandard grades of raw and refined had ex panded to 135 points, whereas at this season f the year a maximum difference of about 1)0 points Is maintained. The New York, market had been gradually becoming more tn ettled and when an attempt was made to throw on It a full cargo of sugar Tuesday. I rices had to give way. The consumptive de mand throughout the country for sugar has Improved of late with the warmer weather, but there was not much v'plrlt, however, to the Inquiry. refiners' -trices being considered relatively -too high compared with the cost of raw imgar for the trade to take supplies :n advance of Immediate wants. HOP MARKET STEADIER. Buying Demand Improve Its Tone, but Does Not Advance Prices. The hop market h again quieted down because of the laek ot offerings. Tile readi ness with which all supplies put on the mar ket were token up has encouraged, the re maining boidors to thipk that things are on 'he mend, and they ore, therefore, not o ready to put their goods forward. There J no doubt that' there is a steadier under tone to the market, but it is not likely that business could be done even at a slight ad--ance. Buyers -bow a willingness to take hold around the 20-eent mark, but withdraw when higher price arc asked. The late Hurt in activity made a big hole in "Washington stocks, and it is said the Chehalte district is cleaned up bare at values running from lfif 21 cents. Exporters a'e reported to have taken at least 400 bales of Oregon, guaranteeing 20 cents, and are willing to take about 1500 bales additional. guaranteeing 18 and 10 cents without re course. Hopmen figure that England will yet require 5000 bajea of 1904s for blending purposes. Contracting I very difficult to carry on. in view of the movement under way to put the entire 1005 crop of this state in the hands of a corporation, and the hhorts who have beon waiting for a chance to write low contracts will jirobably got left. Since Tineus. of Tacoma. disposed of hla holdings he has cvi dently gone over to the bear fide of the market good and hard, Judging from the lime of the Tacoma papers, which were but lately engaged In an effort to boost p-rlecs cut of right. Krebs. hi partner In the formation of the Oregon pool. Is still boMing his hops, and declares he will continue to do bo until August, He has. however, toM the Oregon growers to sell now if they can get satisfactory prices. WHEAT TRADE RESTRICTED. frith More Steamer Room, Trading "Would lie More Active- Trading in wheat is restricted by the lack of Pteamcrs. There is a fair inquiry' from California, but shippers complain that they cannot be accommodated with tonnage, as the space on most of 'the Dteera coasters is engaged for lumber. Yesterday's quotations on club wheat were &249S4 cents. Biuestcm, and Valley were unchanged. The Valley market was reported a sfeade easier, but quotations given were so lower. Farmers are offering barley rore freely In order to clean up before the new crop comes on. The lower prices prevailing at Sea Francisco also weaken values here. Oats continue very trong. The available supply Is exceedingly Hmtted. and the pros pects are for a short crop in this mate, 'as the acreage hus been much reduced. Prices are now higher than they have been for years. CAR OF WATERMELONS IN. Good Inquiry' f? AH Varieties of 1'rult on Sale. The ear of watermelosts due yesterday 4M not arrive tmtlt noon, and It was late In the afternoon when the fmH was tmt on sale. It was offered at 2 cents a pound, and is ikely to be ta troag doemtid t4y. A ear I cantaloupes Is 4ue today- Yenerday lunialoupc receipts wore Mght and the mar ket was steady. The ear of orefcard fruits received Monday Is practically all cleaned up. Another car is on the way north and will each Portland Friday or Saturday. The last two ears of navet oranges of the seavon are row on Jal. Fruit priees generally -ewcd but lUtie change yesterday ' oxeopt aariootis which wore higher, at SSeifll. owing to their kcarcity. Eggs lllgUer. Chicken. Lower. Eggs were quoted yesterday at IP. 19 and 20 cents, with the bulk of the Business prob ably at the higher figures. Stocks were Mgbt all around, and the demand very brisk. A fair amount ot poultry wai"reee4ved. but the inquiry was -4ew. Most of the Arms dealing In chickens quoted former prices-. 12 cents, fos olds and 1G cents for Springs; hut one house cleaned up its supply of young chickens- at 14 cents, the lowest price realized far thie class ot fowls in several months. Potato Market Firmer. The potato market was quoted firmer yes t&rdy. because ot light supplies of deslr- able grades. Very few Garnet "Chiles were on the street. -01& Oregon potatoes were also scarce and sales were reported at J 1.30 3 L40. Even higher prices are looked for next welc, aa . stock? In the state are almost exhausted. Veal Again Weaker. Receipts of real were very heap- yesterday, and with only a moderate demand the market weakened. The Inquiry tor block bogs was good. The ammunition employed by this leader ship was not all ot a very substantial char acter, and some of' the Incidents of tha day were of a kind that would havo proved dis tinctly discouraging In a market where de prrssCoa was the order cf thie day..' Bui the long resistance to repeated attack which the market has shown and the moderate success In the last two days of efforts to get priees upwards- had gathered such cumulative ef fect that a comparative upward movement was the rraulL A, considerable volume of. realizing sales was found to overhang the market, placed there "by "anxious "holders who have been waiting for an opportunity to sell their stocks. . It was not until late In the day that the movement to take profits began to make any effective drag- on the advance. By that time a considerable portion ot the require ments from the short Interest had been sat Ufled. The early movement centered very largely, In specialties, and United Stales Steel pre ferred made an effective leader. Reports of large orders for Russian naval construction, were current, and something was made ot the published denial by ex-Prwldent Schwab of an Intention to combine a number of - In dependent corporations to compete with the United Staler Steel Corporation. It became known that the report of the State Superintendent of Insurance on the Equitable Life Investigation would be given out tonight and the. hope was Indulged' In that this might be the last episode of any sentatlonal character In that long-drawn-out subject, a consummation that -would afford great relief to all stock market Interests. Doubtful factors which were Ignored dur ing the day were crop damage rumors, a re duction in the price of refined sugar, a pass ing of the dividend on Corn Products pre ferred, a declaration of the regular dividend In Lehigh Valley Inetead of a hoped for In crease, and the discovery ot fraudulent rais ing of stock certificates in Philadelphia. Any one ot these Incidents would bare unsettled the market at. any time In the recent past. The closing of a truft company In Phlla deiphla. announced late .today, had a dis turbing effect. The closing tone was un fettled and Irregular. Bands were firm. Total rales, par value. $4,240,000. United States bonds were all un changed on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sales. High. Weakness in the wheat market prevailed today at the start. Initial quotations on July being oft Sc. at 8S3 S&c. The opening decline was mainly a re flection of lower prices at Liverpool. Al though additional rain had fallen through out a large portion of the wheat belt, com paratively little apprehension seemed to be felt among pit traders 'who sold quite freely cn the slight decline In foreign markets. Commlesion-houses were fair buyers, but the demand was not sufficient to prevent the price of July declining to SSc Suddenly, however, the market turned bullish. Prices ' made a quick advance. July selling up to 00c The greatest strength was manifested In the July option, the reason being tha high prices being paid for cash wheat in the Southwest markets. A report from St. Louis stated that $1 per bushel was paid for No. 2 red. new wheat. Another cause for the sudden upturn was a report that while har vesting In Oklahoma la progressing rapidly. he yield fo only poor to fair. Shortage in yield was oald to be due to chinch bugs and black rust. From the Nortwest simul taneously came fresh reports of damage by rust. Late In the session the market again turned weak. The reason was heavy liquida tion of September by an Influential long. The advance was. lost, the final quotations on July being SUc lower, at SS989c Liberal profit-taking by prominent holders caused a weak close In the corn market. July opened c lower, at 51c sold between 54c and 54c. and closed c lower, at 54Hc The oats market was strong early, closing easy.
