TRUST FOR HAULING-COAL Both Parties Combined to Boycott Outsiders . and GInch . Public. Blackmail Paid Shea In Pack! npr-Hoiusc ..Strike. CHICAGO . June 15. The greatest scandal Chicago has ever seen. accord ing to State Attorney Healy, is to fol- j low the disclosure made today before f the grand jury by John C Driscoll. i when the former secretary or the As sociated Building Trades & Coal-team-ownors Association revealed the entire history of the dealings between emJ ployers and union labor leaders, par ticularly that brancli of union labor represented by the Teamsters Union. Mr. Healy said: 'More fwious offenses have been com mitted than bribery ana conspiracy and the cvidonce presented to the Jury has been of an extremely sensational charac actcr. It is very Important and will lead to startling: results. .The names men tioned by the witnesses are those of prominent men on both sides. If I thought there would be no result from thl investigation. I would call a halt Immediately. T believe the present line of Inquiry will occupy the attention of the jury fof the remainder of this week and a portion of next, but, K necessary, all the docket cases? will be side-tracked bocnuse of the great Importance I attach to the results of the present inquiry." Tomorrow will witness the gathering before the grand jury of 20 or more of the prominent business men of Chicago, together with leading members of the bar. the States Attorney said, but it 1b impossible tonight to learn the names of those, for whom subpoenas have been issued. John C. Driscoll was today the chief witness before the grand jury and recited what he called the history of the deal- lugs betweon employers and union labor, Dlscoll told how the coal teamsters and coal team-owners had made the first joint j trade agreement, which provided that the i ownon should employ only members of I the Coal Teamsters' Union, and that the j members of the union should work for no -employer 1101 a iiicmuw ui mv toamowncrs Association. The effect of this arrangement was to force every coal wagon owner Into the Coal-teamowncrs Association, and every coal-wagon driver into the Teamsters Union. The owners behind this provision, that barred union drivers from working for men not mem bers of the association and prevented nonunion drivers from driving coal wag ons, raised the cartage rates of coal from SO to 60 cents a ton for short hauls and to as high as $1 for long hauls. Says Shea Charged $8000. It was learned late tonight that one of the staementf made by Driscoll to the Jury was that President Shea, of the Toamstors Union, accepted 5S000 at the time of the stockyards strike last Sum mer. This strike began July 12 and lasted 'for nine weeks. About 26.000 men were thrown out of work and millions of dol lars were lost by the packers In business and by the men In wages. According to Drlscoll's story, he went to Shea to see if the teamsters could not be prevented from going out on a sympathetic strike. Shea i said by Driscoll to have replied: "It will cost 5SO00 to keep them at work." Driscoll declared that he raised the money and paid It to Shea and that the labor leader was not able to prevent the men from walking out. Driscoll after wards, according to his story, demanded the return of the money, and Shea, de clared that he had paid it over to two othor men connected with the Teamsters' Union. i KV MOVES TO END STRIKE Ilnnrahan . Takes u Hand Team sters' Offer ltcjectcd. CHll'AGO. June IB. While apparently there wag no surface change In the strike today, a powerful agent for peace was at work. Grand Master J. G. Hanrahan. of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen, arrived In the city. and. after a conference with Mayor Dunne, announced that he would Use his good offices to settle the strike. Chairman John V. FarwelL Jr., of the Enployors Asxoolatlon. declined to con sider a tontatlve strike settlement propo sition presented to him today by the State Board of Arbitration. The proposition was an offer that, if the employers would agree to use all hon orable Influcrfec to bve police and Deputy Sheriffs and all armed .guards withdrawn immediately, the strike would be declared off. even as to the express companies, and that orders to' deliver anywhere would be obeyed by the teamsters. The offer had the approval of President Shea, and the National executive board of the teamsters. Building Trades Withdraw Aid. CHICAGO. June 15. Thousands of circu lars have .been sent out to architects, builders and labor union members gen erally, containing information that the Associated Building Trades of Chicago Htid Cook County have withdrawn their moral and financial support from the tiMmsters. The circulars, which are Is sued officially by the building trades, charge that the members of the Safe and Machlnerymovers" and Riggers' Union, which was organized about two years ago and Is made up of teamsters, has been performing work which rightfully be longed to the members of the various trades affiliated with the building trades. It is charged that the Safe and Machinery movers -and Riggers are working under the scale of wages adopted by their va rious unions, and that the building trades cannot, under the circumstances, recog nize them as union men. The building workers number 10.000 men. Tcamowners Elect Officers. CHICAGO. June 15. TO THE GRADURTE You've finished with High School, for instance; hare devoted years to acquiring a good education; your parents may have strained every nerve to keep the home going and you at school. Now you fare the world and it looks cold and heartless; everyone seems wrapped in selfish concerns; you look for a situation, try place .after place, and, in every-day par lance, "get turned down." You see the pinch of it all and from trying to get a- place that promises promotion, you .falter and are ready to take "any kind of a joh." DON'T. REMEMBER THAT A PORTLAND HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATE IS "WORTH SOMETHING. When looking for a place, or writing in reply to advertisements, mention this great qualification. You've no business experience, ' to be sure, and the. pay must Ve small to start with, but engaged on a High School basis, you are in an atmoshphere condu cive to development and quicker, promotion. Just as in the German army, the several years' service exacted of an unschooled recruit is shortened in the case of a man graduated from, the gymnasium to a year or two. The latter seems to learn more quickly because of previous mental training. Friends and "backers" do not amount to "a hill of beans" nowadays the healthy young man or woman has success wrapped up in the individual. Not all can be come millionaires, but everyone with youth, health of mind and body, can succeed. The man or woman who challenges this statement is a misanthrope. Don't get sour; don't get dis couraged. You're welcome to this advice from this big store you'll thank us for it some time. It's bread we cast on the waters.
