Kddy Householder has some room on his i host for a medal pr two. for he made a running one-hand catch of a long fly to Wt center that brought the big Sabbath crowd to their collective toos and a howl of delight from their throats, even if the Lome team did slip into the slough of de feat with a 4-to-l game registered against them. Mike Mitchell, the awkward initial guardian soaked one homer over the gar den wall and garnered two abjeet singles. In the fourth inning Mike blew the hall ut of the lot. In a ball game that was cleverly played considering, the conditions of the Vaughn street grounds, the Oaks yesterday after noon shut out the Schillers. Only seven innings wore played, owing to the La Cros?e game, which was to follow the ball game. A long slender flali-llkc youth with a wind-up delivery, much after the Chimmy de Whale's fashion and with a teasing slow ball that would make a Ham Iberg floater look like a cannon ball, pitched the Oaks to victor. Hunter's round the corner, dewdrop curves made the Schillers look like a lot of short fillers and when the Sabbath matinee closed, the score 2 to 4 was hung up. The once "best diamond" in the Coast loaguo wax a sight to bohotcL It looked as if it had been struck by a Hoppnor cloudburst. The Infield was a mass of mud balls and as rough as a newly ploughed field. In spite of this, however, both sides did some sharp fielding and but for the desire of the Schillers to heave the ball out of the inrlosure, the errors were few. Riddle slid them over the pan for the clgarmaken and If he had been accorded better support, neither side t would have scored. But Mltimatoly the Portlands Added another goal, after 14 minuter hard play, and tho match ended: Portlands. S; Shamrocks, i. The weather was ideal for laerosse and an Intorested crowd was precenL An added attraction to the match was the presence of Lynch, of the famous West minster Lacrosse Club. British Columbia, who is In the city at present en a visiu and he kindly agreed to don a Portland uniform and take care of first home. HU superiority was soon apparent, for no sooner had tho ball been separated from Wallace and Beckwlth at the faco-oC than Lynch scored In one minute's time. Bully for Lynch-hc is the boat first homa seen here. When the ball again started on Its travels. McNlcholl was poppcred with two hot shots, hut he saved, and Watson also did clever stick work la saving his goal. Beckwlth JMcund tho ball from a missed clteck and ran to Stewart, who blocked t.He ptey. and la a return run Lynch got the ball, scoring this time In three minutes. His shooting was admirable, and he was not in the least bit flurried with rivals as busy about him as hornets. McDougall and Jennings fig ured well in the next play, hut the Sham rocks got the ball, and Lawrence seorod first for his aide. Aldod by Beckwlth. who had a pretty run. Lawrence passed three players and scored. Two all. In the general play. It should be remem bered that there are star plays that don't appear in the score, because the players arc dofense men, who ore not near the enemy's uprights. In this way fine work by Ken Campbell. McNlcholl. Stewart. J. J. McDondl. Wallace. Hawes. Shaw and othors counted. They either made goals possible or blocked the enemy's plays. Ken Campbell la a find for Portland. His defense work is first-das, and his method Is cool and steady. Wallace is one of the tar mnners in the lacrosse business, ami he speeds and shoots like an Indian flyaway. Jennings puts an amazing amount of speed and courage into his attack, and he la there every time. So is Dan Hawes. Shaw puts up a good game, and is lucky smashing com bination lay. Both Bourgeois and Wat son made good goaltontier. The play was so even that It will be necessary to have another meeting to settle the question of supremacy. The Jlnc-up: PorUaa4. Peritto. Shamrock.
