"The fact that Summer Js here, despite the
prevailing; weataer, was evidenced by the
first arrivals of cantaloupes from the Coach
eua aieirrci. ine initial snipment was re
ceived by the Pearson-Page Company, and
brought $8." The crate contained 1G canta
loupes of very fair quality. Three crates all
told were received yesterday, and the last
.sold for $6. There will be dally shipments
from now on. and the supply will be kept
up to the demand. It Is estimated that 35
carlots will be brought up frem Coachelia
this season.
Receipts of strawberriea were unusually
light and the brisk demand sent prices up,
Some of the choicest offerings brought $1.75,
A dealer who returned from Hood River yes
terday utated that the shipping season there
is practically over, to far as this market
is concerned. Picking has also ceased in
somn of the- districts around, Portland.
Apricots were in overiupply and decidedly
weak at 75 cents to $1 a -box for average
stock and 50 cents for poor. A larger f-hlp-
ment of new California applea was received
and was quoted at 90 cents per half box.
Good local Royal Ann cherries were offered
at $1.25. A few blackberries were received
and were held at $1.50. California plums were
rlow rale at $1 a box. Two cars ef bananas
were received during the day.
NO ACTIVITY IN HOPS.
Local Dealer Look for 20-Cent Market in
Ten Days.
There is no activity in the hap market.
and no sales have been reported since the re
cent trading in Yakima. Dealers .say they
are without Eastern orders at any price. The
market is also bare of growers offerings. J.
J Metzler. a local dealer, considers the mar
ket very weak.
"I believe In 10day Wwjj. te .the ..mar
ket down to 20 cents," he stld yesterday
"None of the big houses, LWenthal, Klaber,
T'llman. Schwartz and that dans are do
ing any future buying. That looks bad for
the market. If there were going to be good
1905 prices, you woaJd purely see some of
the big dealers getting contracts now. As it
i. not one of them has bought a pound of
hops -ahead. Nobody wants hops at present
prices. I am offering a small lot of the
flnet-t hops in the Hate for 23 cent, hops that
cost me 244. but 1 can't find any takers."
The "Kentish Observer of May 18. Jtvst re
ceived, saya of the English crop:
The bine continues to make good progress,
and
11 tying is well aavancea. Thre are very-
complaints of flea this season, but the
aphis will, no doubt, put in an appearance
in due course.
Mall advice from Prague, dated May 1
are a follows:
At the beginning of last week the hop
market were quiet but steady, but during
the last three or four days the demand in
creased on both the Nuremberg and Kaa
hop markets and full prices bad to be paid.
xo uremDerg rren supplies come very
sparingly. -as the stocks in the Afferent Ger
man countries are -nearly exhausted and in
Paat they have ceased altogether long ajro,
The week closed with a firmer tendency. On
account of the cold nights the growth of the
plant is " a. very alow one.
BARLEY IN DEMAND.
Stocks In the State. Said to Bo Nearly
Exhausted.
Barley show Increased aeivlty. and prices
are quoted very firm at $22.75 for feed. Stoeks
in the state are. said to be practically ex
hausted. The high price of oats ha caused
more demand tor barley and this ha had
much to do with affecting the market.
Oats are quoted by dealers as strong at $29,
but it is reported that a sale cf 200 tens of
choice white was made at $30.
The wheat market was quiet and un
changed yesterday. The undertone was firm
enough, based on other markets, but buyers
wre not inollned to purchase unlee they
could do so at favorable price.
F. J. Mahoney. of Tekoa and Condon,
writes of grain crop prospects in those sec
tions: "In my opinion the Palouse wheat
crop looks better this year than It has for
the past 10 years, and the acreage is larger
than usual. In Gilliam County wheat is
looking fine. Last year 1.500,000 bushels
were harvested. This year fuMy 25 per cent
more wheal will be marketed in the vicinity
cf Condon for the new road to handle."
BUTTER MARKET WEAK.
Failure of Attempt Made to Advance
Trice.
The butter market. takn as a whole,
wa weak. The Fair trade ha net dene
much to stimulate the demand, and receipts
have steadily Increased. Aa effort was made !
a few day ago by some of the city cream
eries to get together and advance the price
to 224 cents, but the scheme fell through.
The egg market was very active, large deal
ers quoting IS and 154 cents, but varying
as to whether the tone was steady or firm.
Most inclined to the latter opinion. Some few
firms that do not deal heavily In eggs re
ported sales at 19 cents.
Poultry Teceipu yesterday were insignifi
cant. The market is In fine shape now for
all that come In, and It prices are not put
too high will continue so,
CHEESE: DROPS AGAIN.
Portland WUI Rare to Take Care of TUla
snook Output.
The cJieM market took another drop yesterday-to.
12H cents. Front street's receipts
were heavy nd the creamery rata were also
largely supplied. Word come from Tllla
J"ofc that tbe output of thai eectloa will be
large and the bulk of It wlH be unloaded
on this rnarlcet. The. East is also lotrr. Wis
consin quoin g 9 cents. It is underwood that
two or three cars of Wisconsin cbeete are
on the -way to Seattle, where they can be
laid down for 104 cents. This shuts out
Tillamook cheese from that market. A con
siderable part of yesterday receipts cams
from Nehalem.
LARGE SUPPLY OF VEGETABLES.'
Many Local Line Are a Unit on the
Market.
The steamer vegetables were unleaded yes
terday morning and for the most part Hd
weH. There was the usual assortment and
prices generally were steady. A lair lot of
new potatoes and new red onions also etame
on the steamer, and a straight car of ontons
arrived later In the day. They were heM at
J1.65S2. the top price for fancy.
The market Is glutted with Oregon pea,
which slumped to 3jf4 cent, except tele
phones, which were held at 5S6 cent. As
paragus was also a drug and much of it was
worked off at the express charge. Rhubarb
la more plentiful, but steady. A firmer tone
prevails In the potato market.
Improvement In Veal.
Llgher receipts ef veal in the last few days
have eaased some Improvement In the tone
of the market, but prices are no better yet.
Most ef the business done yesterday, -was at
54 cents. Perk. rauUen and lamb were
steady and unchanged. Beef was duM and
easy.

Causes Setback to Prices Close
Is Dull and Heavy.
NEW YORK. June 5. Meat of today's small
business In stocks was done during the first
hour ef the session. There was a notable
cesgostjon of the dealings In a few specu
lative favorites, hut such as it was the mar
ket showed distinct firmness. The dullness ap
proached at times to stagnation, and there
was nothing to shew any share In the mar
ket en the part of any bull professional ele
ment. Among these the sentiment seemed to
be cheerful and various pools signalized their
existence by their activity In special stock.
The market had cne decided set-back on
realizing after the opening advance and an
other at the last which reduced prices at the
dosing. The profit-taking was especially'
large in Amalgamated Copper, which had risen
point and then fell back to a point, below
Saturday attur' the publication of the finan
cial statement of the company. The sympa
thetic effect of this relapse carried back the
whole market- United States Steel preferred
took up most of the. recovery and was In Its
turn a strong sympathetic -influence on the
general list. Ontario. & Western was again
in large request, and rumors were revived of
the guarantee of a dividend by New lork
Central and New Tork. New Haven i Hart
ford. Amalgamated did not revive effectual
ly from the effect or the realizing movement
and closed with a net loss of Hi.
The taking up of the advance by the United
States Steel stocks was regarded as of good
augury for the whole market, as the persist
ent heaviness of these stocks had been a
drag en tendencies to rally during the last
few days. There were rumors of favorable
earnings making for the current Quarter In
connection with the advance. Some effect
was produced by the appearance of negetla
lions looking towards bringing about peace
between Rum la and Japan. The subsidence
ef the violent storm In the Equitable cen
tra verry was a relief to sentiment, although
that subject continued to be actively dis
cussed in the financial work! and to be
fraught with possibilities of further: harm.
Railroad t raffle officials spoke in a cheer
ful tone ef business prospects, the volume of
offerings being held well above last years
level. The feeling regarding the crops en
the whole was mere bepefuf than has re
cently prevailed, and contributed materially
te the firmness .of stocks. The money mar
ket retained Its unruffled surface, notwith
standing the weakness of the Saturday bask
statement and some further large money
transactions. Including a transfer through the
sub-Treasury of J2.0CO.O0O to San Francisco.
The market showed Itself soft to the effect
of profit-taking by the room traders and
closed heavy, with the gains much reduced
er wiped out.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
nlw. 2.519.000. United Stales bonds were

AH News Tends Toward
Depression
of
Price.
CHICAGO. June 5. Weakness In the wheat
market was In evidence at the start. Initial
quotations en July being off HtfVie to ?c
S7TeSe te SS4c One reason for the
opening decline was the bearish tenor of
weekly statistics. The fact that world s ship
ments of wheat during the last week were
extremely liberal had an Important Influence,
but the figures showing the total movement
were apparently of less Interest to traders
In general than the figures giving the amount
exported from Russia. According to the of
ficial statistics, shipments of wheat from that
country during the past week were double
the total of the previous week. Furthermore.
conditions In the United States were appar
ently regarded as Increasingly favorable to an
abundant harvest. Weather in the Southwest
was dry and temperatures were much higher.
From the start, commission houses and shorts
were free sellers. As trading progressed.
selling became more general. With almost
nothing from the country but bearish news
concerning the crop, weakness became more
pronounced. One report from Kansas City
stated that harvesting began today In 'some
sections of Southern Kansas and that opera.
lions would be general by next week. At S7c
July reached the lowest point of the day.
The market clesed-extremely weak, with July
