BURGLARS IN THE KITCHEN
3Irs. Robert J. Stewart -Keturns
Home to Discover Intruders.
Two burglars entered the home o Rob
ert J. Stewart, of the firm of Stewart &
"Wlnslow, contractors, at 400 Fifteenth
street North, yesterday afternoon, but
were frightened away by Mrs. Stewart
before anything was stolen. Mrs. Stewart,
who had been downtown, returned home
about 2 o'clock, and upon opening the
front door heard a noise in the kitchen.
Knowing that none of the family would
bo in the house at that time, she ran to
the kitchen, to find two men. Upon her
entrance they fled. The men had tried to
force an entrance in the cellar door, but
a skeleton key, which they employed for
that purpose, broke off In the lock. They
then tried the kitchen door, breaking the
lock with a powerful pair of nippers.
Detectives Kerrigan and Snow, who
were detailed on the case, are inclined to
believe that the men are professionals
from the manner in which they effected
an entrance. They think they are "after
noon" men recently from the East.
