Dr. E. L. Irvine Terrorizes the
Tenants of Building.
ARRESTED BY PATROLMEN
When the Police Came the Physician
Threatened Them With Shot
gun and Knife, but Was
'Finally Disarmed.
Not dauntefi by a double-barrel shot
gan pointed full at their faces. Patrol
men Cole and Hosley about 3 o'clock
yesterday morning arrested Dr. E. I.
Irvine, of 2S014 Grand avenue, -who was
temporarily deranged through the use of
cocaine. After the policemen had knocked
the shotgun from his hands. Dr. Irvine
pulled a large surgical knife, which had
a blade about 12 inches In length, and
attempted to stab the patrolmen. He
was handcuffed and taken to the police
station.
Dr. Irvine became insane Saturday
night and threatened to kill the tenants
of the building in which he was stay
ing. He walked up and down the halls
of the building, carrying the loaded
shotgun and the large knife, defying
anyone to molest him. Those in the
building were terrified and locked the
doors of their rooms, refusing to allow
an entrance. Several of the tenants in
the building had furniture piled against
their doors. Finally; when Dr. Irvine
was in another part of the building, a
woman slipped out the back way and
telephoned to the police.
Patrolmen Cole and Hosley were de
tailed to the case and when they arrived
at the scene of action they found the
crazed man .in a room on the second
floor. They tried to reason with him
and asked that he submit to arrest- This
greatly incensed the crazed man and he
dared the policemen to cross the thres
hold. He stood at the door with the
shotgun in hand, both hammers of which
were cocked.
The policemen did not rush at him
as they realized it would have meant
sudden death, but waited until he had
turned his head as he thought he could
obtain assistance by pushing the electric
Jautton. The two policemen closed in
and knocked the gun from his hands.
A terrific struggle ensued as Dr. Irvine
is a powerful man. The three men
fought around the room, Dr. Irvine try
ing to reach his gun.
Suddenly he reached down to his bosom
and drew the knife, which he had ex
hibited a few hours before. He was
about to sink it deep In the body of his
nearest assailant when a heavy blow on
the jaw caused him to drop the weapon
and prevented him from becoming a
murderer. The patrol wagon was sum
moned and the doctor was taken to the
police station, although he endeavored
again and again to break away and
escape.
Dr. Irvine has been under the sur
veillance 'of the police before, as he is
known to be a desperate man when un
der the Influence of cocaine. - Recently
the attacks have been more frequent
and each time he became more danger
ous and desperate. He is said to be an
excellent physician and has had a largo
practice.
