SPLAY AT" FAIR
Easter Gowns Make a Brave
Showing There.
CROWDS THRONG WALKS
Surprise Evinced at the Rapid Prog
ress Which Is Being Made
Towards Completion of
the Exposition.
All Portland -which did not attend the
ball game yesterday seemed to have
assembled at the Fair grounds. It was
a brave Easter display. It seemed to be
a symphony of color wth the stately
white buildings for a background
Ladies in brown silk taffeta and russet
shoes, ladies gowned in green, or in
blue, formed a beautiful' kaleidoscopic
scene as they moved about In the
prnwds.
The procession was a pleasant thing
to see- and lasted all the long, warm af
ternoon. It denoted prosperity and gen
erosity on the part of husbands and
fathers and a laudable desire to be
well dressed on the part of wives and
'daughters.
They did not seem to have much pur
pose, these Easter promenaders, unless
it were to be observed. The men were
for thft most narr out In lisrht SDrlntr
clothes, except a strong delegation of
the top-hat, frock-coat class. Tnese per
sons gave the procession quite a metro
politan effect, but they looked rather
warm in their 'high, straight collars.
Most wrn sufficiently unconscious to
have at least one thought, and that was
surprise at the rapidity with which
the Fair as a whole is being completed.
They found twice as much Trail tnere
as a week ago, everything else looked
about completed, and inside the exhibit
buildings displays were beginning to
assume artistic proportions. The rush
was plainly on for the finishing touches
especially along the Trail, and, though
it was partially delayed for a day. the
very boards looked as if they were, ly
ing ready at a moment's notice to be
hammered and sawed and become shel
ters behind which the denizens of the
world might gather according to race
and color and amuse the idle spectator.
Prisoner Dies of Alcoholism.
"William Henry, about 65 years of age,
who had been held at the police station
for several days on the charge of vagran- I
cy. died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock, i
at St Vincent's Hospital where he had
been taken a few minutes before. It Is
thought his death was due to alcoholism,
as for years he had been addicted to
strong drink.
Henry was arrested early Friday morn
ing, and following his Imprisonment at
the City Jail he was attacked with the
delirium tremens. At first it was not
thought that his case was serious. Yes
terday morning, Dr. Zan, who had been
attending him, ordered that Henry be
taken to the hospital. He died a few
minutes later while In convulsions.
