Great Northern Benefited by Iron Ore Land Developments Jumps In Minor Industrials. NEW YORK. April I4.-A revival of the Northern Securities settlement excitement re sulted In a speculative revival on the tock exchange, which spread pretty generally throughout the list, but the conspicuous fact about the day's operations was tho enormous congestion in the few stocks immediately affected by the current rumors, especially Union Pacific. SU Paul. New York Central and on the curb market. Northern Securities, which oM up to $1.S0, thus justifying pre dictions whleh have been current among street speculative operators for sometime, but with out obtatalng general credence. The rumors to account for the advance were many and various, and for the most part exceedingly vague. .-The capitalization of enormous values discovered In Iron ore lands In possession of the Great Northern Company had a good influence, on that stock. Great Northern preferred sold up to 333. It was argued that the Iron ore lands would greatly enrich the Northern Securities Company. As a large proportion of this distribution will fall to the Union Pacific treasury, that stock was held to be entitled to a corresponding advance, but with the excitement in the market this explanation was deemed Inade quate and surmise fell back on the supposed ues to which the Union Pacific preferred stock, is to be put. The stories are as entirely without ofllclal authority or admission to day as at any time. The palpable fact, how ever, was that almost unlimited amounts of the stocks most noarly concerned paired con stantly through the market all day. and the absorptive power for them seemed Insatiable. The volume of transactions and the move ment of prices In the general railroad Het was moderate and the extent of the price movement was -found on careful scrutiny not to be very wide. In the industrial department the most promi nent high-grade Industrial, especially United States Steel preferred, were Inclined to move narrowly. Of industrials of a minor class, .however, there is a long list which made advances during the day of all the way from 1 to 3 and 4 points. The brilliant conditions, shown to cxbrt in the Iron and steel trade by the Mattatlcs of production and consumption have served to give great authority to the Incoming reports of highly prosperous collec tions In all departments of trade. The favor ehown to the Industrial stocks Increases ac cordingly. It lr. round easy to effect move ments by formation of pools In many of these stocks, and it Is not unusual for the rise to be horalded by some such anaouncement as that arrangements have been made for a sharp upward movement In this stock or or that stock. The movement Is pretty sure to follow. Operations of this clas. however, do not. tend to fortify confidence in the market. The currency movomont for the week gave promise of a good cash gain by the banks and oCered no obstacle to the maintenance of the speculation. The lrregtliar closing left prices not far below the best of the day. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par val ue, $4,475,0uo. United States bonds were all unchanged en call. Increase in Shipments From Argen tina Slump In the Minne apolis Market. CHICAGO. April 14. Weakness in the wheat market developed soon after the" open ing. Considerable firmness, however, was manifested at the start. July being up Uf?He. tSSHSS?ic May was unchanged to He. higher, at SI.IfKtfZMTtt. Tho initial strength was due primarily to higher prices at Liver pool, but cold weather, accompanied by snow in the Northwest, was an offset to unfavor able weather In the Northwest. Reports from the Southwest told or rains In sections of tho Winter wheat belt where moisture was great ly needed. Another factor that helped to create a bearish sentiment was an Increaee In shipments from Argentina. Soon after the opening a leading long began to sell mod erately. Pit traders followed. The result was the weakening of tho market. As trading' progressed prices continued to decline. Fresh Impetus was given the declining tendency by a sharp break In prices at Minneapolis. Ad vices regarding the condition of. Winter, wheat were conflicting, but thoe of a bearish char acter seemed to predominate. A St. Louis trade journal reported conditions In the wheat belt favorable and above the average for this time of year. May delivery to un der selling pressure all- day and showed more weakness than distant futures. The closing price for May was at the lowest point of the day. $1.14. July, after selling down to 87Kc. closed easy at S7?ic. Liquidation by several local long caused weakness in the corn market. The decline In wheat was largely responsible for the selling pressure. "I do not consider divorce an evil by any rnean3," asserted Miss Anthony, who was on her feet before the reading: of the reso lution had been concluded.
