Things broke badly for the Portland
bowling team last night and the best it
could do was to land fourth in the five-
cornered telegraphic bowling contest.
None of the men rolled up to their usual
fprro, but this might be accounted for by
reason of the newness of the alleys and
the fact that the men did not have suf
ficient time In which to become accus
tomed to them.
The individual scores for the three games'
were:

Unfortunate splits were strung through
the game and pulled the scores down
badly. Taking everything Into considera
tion, however, Portland made a good
showing and had the team been playing
on older alleys would have given Seattle
a close rub for second place.
Salt Lake's score may well be regarded
as phenomenal and brings it into the record-breaking
class.
Portland's end of the contest was
watched by an interested crowd of bowl
ers and much enthusiasm was manifested.
The affair has proved to be a success
and monthly contests will in all proba
bility be arranged.
Following the tournament the players
and a number of bowling enthusiasts met
at tYip. Portland Hotel for a supper, dur
ing which the Portland Bowling Asm-"1
-elation was formed. This association will
have as Its members all people interested
in bowling.
This association will send a team to
Spokane on April 24 to enter the North
western tournament to be heid there on
that date. The team for this event will
be practically that which played last
night. From now until their departure
for Spokane the boys will put in a good
deal of practice and they confidently be
lieve that on the 24th they can make a
better showing, even on strange alleys.
CONSPIRACY CHAEGE DROPPED
Prosecution Fears to Furnish - Evi
dence to Nan Patterson.
NEW YORK. April 14. The indictment
charging Nan Patterson with conspiracy
with J. Morgan Smith and Mrs. Smith to
obtain money from Caesar Young was dis
missed in the Court of General Sessions
today at the request of Assistant District
Attorney Rand. Counsel for the Smiths
demurred to the indictment against the
Smiths, and declared that the facts al
leged against them did not constitute a
crime. The court reserved the decision.
Counsel for the Smiths endeavored to se
cure the return 'of property taken from
them, but failed.
Miss Patterson, who is about to be tried
again for the murder of Caesar loung,
was brought Into court with the Smiths.
Mr. Rand told the court that a mistake
had been made in drawing up the indict
ment against Miss Patterson, and that it
tended to prejudice her position in the
murder case. In asking for the dismissal
?t the indictments against her, he reserved
the right to resubmit. Miss Patterson was
then remanded to the Tombs Prison. The
effect of the action will be to prevent her
counsel from getting at the Grand Jury
minutes, which might have aided In her
defense.
In support of his contention that the
facts charged against the Smiths did not
constitute conspiracy, their counsel read
an Intercepted letter from Julia Smith to
"Caesar" Young.ln which the writer stated
that Miss Patterson was about to become
a mother, which Is one of the allegations
in the charge of conspiracy to get money
from Young. Counsel said the statements
as to Miss Patterson's health did not bear
out the allegations, and that the alleged
threatening of Young with a revolver, if
true, was an independent offense. He de
clared that false pretenses could not be
considered extortion.
TELEPHONE CO. GETS NAMES
If Council Refuses It Franchise
Will Appeal to Voters.
It
With the closing of the registration of
voters the Home Telephone Company,
which is trying to secure a franchise for
the Installation of automatic telephones In
Portland, withdrew its force of signature
ratherers at the Courthouse yesterday
It has secured 10.5S4 signatures to its
petition for the referendum, or 8389 more
names than the law requires.
The matter of granting the franchise
will come before the City Council for
final passage on May 3, and it may not
be necessary to submit the question to a
vote of the people, but the new company
proposed to take no chances upon what
the Council might do, and therefore kept
its solicitors busy.
According to the city charter, only 15
per cent of the names of voters at the
last general election must be appended to
a petition asking that a matter be sub
mitted to a vote of the people; but to
convince the Councllmen that the public
really desired the franchise granted the
company secured the names of all voters
possible.
