1 THE MORNIKa. OKEGONIAis WEDNESDAY, APRIIi 12, 19'0o. lo PRICES NOT STABLE Uncertain Conditions Prevail in Butter Market, WIDE RANGE OF QUOTATIONS Majority of the Trade Consider Val ues Weakahd on the Point of -Dropping'Agaln Outside Markets Lower. Te "butter market is In an unsatisfactory and uncertain condition. To all appearaices A is decidedly weak, but some dealers re psxt a. steadiness in tone that Is - notseen by t'-jeJr competitors. The result is a -wide range cf quotation between the various top ! rands of creamery butter. The unevenness of price is not confined to the outside product, r t Ts Also seen In the quotations of the city -eamerles. ; White clover butter, for instance. s oTering at 25 cents, while Haselwood Is 3jote1 at 27 cents. The latter Arm is offer -g 26 cents for butter fat. The Oregon brand ' the Oregon Creamery is on the market at J 27" cents, and Weatherly's product St 25 c nts. This is a wide range for brands that a. grade equaUy good and dhow a-'dlffor-fce of opinion among the manufacturers as actual -values. The city creamery men. almost without exception, declare the under tone of the znarkot weak. , " Portland is an exporting: market, acd can v' Ignore conditions at other points." said C. A Townsend. "Seattle is a good customer ' iMs city, but when Minneapolis butter "an b laid down there for 23 cents, the deal- tf that city will not patronise Portland. San Francisco butter can be placed in Seattle Jor Je(E than 20 cents. We are clearly too f igH here and prices will have to. come down. I look for a market below 20 cents before the downward movement is checked." n Front street, country creamery brands are offered at 22H4T24 cents. Tn Hne"quar t ' the demand is slew, in others it 2 raid to show Improvement. The majority of the trade call prices weak. California butter Is freely offered here at 22's cents. A large lot of pasteurized but 'er from Eureka was brought up on the Redondo and Is reported to be moving well. . Alaka Buys California Butter. SAN FRANCISCO. April 11. (Special.) The first weekly crop bulletin of the Weather Bureau, Oregon section, for .1905. was issued 'sterday. Crop conditions are summarized as follows: The "Winter was favorable for Fall-sown cops of grain and grasaes. except In a few pcaHered localities In the eastern sections, -rrhere the cold weather In February killed srme grain that was not well protected "by snow. The re-seeding of these areas was soon afterwards completed. The Fall grain which came through the Winter unharmed la In excellent condition; the plant Is well root- ed and it has -etooicd luxuriantly. Forage cops have made excellent growth and pas ( tures and ranges afford abundant feed for stock. Lambing Is well along and the losses have been slight. Goat shearing Is nearly completed and an average clip of mohair has been secured. ' The season is much earlier than usual, and he farmers have their work well In hand. Spnng plowing has advanced rapidly and man j- farmers In the Willamette Valley have their Spring wheat all Seeded. Early sown Faring grain everywhere has come up to a good stand, and the grain crop generally is n a very satisfactory condition. Rapid rrogress has also been made- in planting gar dens, and those planted early are making good advancement. Hops are doing well, and she cultivation of the yards Is In active prog ress, some vines are far enough advanced for training and twining, and this work now requires- considerable attention. Corn rlantlng has just started In Southern Ore Eon. Several frosts occurred during the past few days, and fruit, which Is generally in bloom, has suffered to some extent; reports- as to the amount of damage are conflicting, but ap parently poaches have been Injured the most. Pea'-h. plum and pear trees have bloomed very full, while the apple trees are not so full r blossoms as usual. The soli Is now in excellent condition for T'lowing and germination, but more rain will be needed before long, as it is drying out rapidly. . PORTLAND' MARKETS. Grabr. News of the Day Is in Favor 'of Val ues, but Uncertain Temper Holds Tnroughout Session. NEW TORK. April 11. A nervoufi and ap prehensive tone was reflected In the move ment of stocks throughout today s session. The grounds for the suspicions were not mna- Ifest from any event in the public knowledge, bnt their influence upon the trading was nev ertheless effective. Professional operators claimed to detect evidences of selling by in side interests In dlffernt properties. Actual events were In favor of values. The pov emment report of the April 1 condition of the Winter wheat crop was a notawe m- stanc. but the crop promise at this early period and with the uncertainty of the grow ing season to be faced proved unavailing to hold the market. The holding of a meeting of the .Northern Securities Directors was another source of uncertainty. The results of the meeting proved to be enigmatical to the general surmises in the stock market- The uncertain tone of the afket was Indicated by IU constant fluc tuations, the course of prices changing at least once during every hour f the session. The opening was decidedly strong, and there wa another comparative rally after tnc first decline. Later In the day there were Individual points of strength. Illinois Central was the conspicuous feature of the day. and it seemed to meet with little opposition in Its advance. There was a disposition to give the day's favor to this stock as the chosen property designed for absorption on account of the Union Pacific preferred stock issue, but the supposition was as lacking in author ity as the various others on the same sub ject which have boen set afloat from time to time. The uncertain temper held throughout. and the closing Itself was irregular, but with the day's extremes much reduced. Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par value, $2,755,000. United States bonds were all unchanged on call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Atchison.. 21.900 90 SSft ' $uj do referred.. 1.200 103 iu-? At.
