BUTTER SELLING FREELY.
Demand Stimulated by Monday's Reduction
War Not Likely.
The all around cut wade in butter prices
Monday has had the effect . of .stimulating the
market to a considerable degree and there is
no reason why the activity should not Increase.
It is generally conceded that prices have been
too high all winter and have restricted much
buying. The local market, though active. Is
barely steady at the new prices and is almost
sure to go lower. San Francisco dropped yes
terday to the 20-cent baste, which -will again
give the Californians an opportunity to sell in
this market and may bring loeal prices for
extra creamery down to 23 cents or even 224
cents. With a further drop of one or two
cents at San Francisco, however, tho market
will cease to trouble Portland, as the California
dealers will then begin storing their surplus.
Should the Portland market get down suf
ficiently lpgr buying wlU aUo begin here -for
staring at San Francis. Thfc. 'wlt'h- 'the "cojd
storage operations in this city, will bring the
market -to its true basis, so far as supply and
demand ls' concerned. cons.enuently a butter
war is improbable.

TENNESSEE COAL WAVERS
ITS
ERRATIC MOTION UNSET
TLES STOCK MARKET.
Unusually Large Number of Minor
Specialties Dealt In, but Aggre
gate of Transactions Smaller.
NEW YORK. April 4. The complexion of
today's stock market was decidedly mixed.
An unusually large number of separate lfuea
were dealt in, notwithstanding the smaller
aggregate of the transactions. Many usually
neglected specialties and Industries were dealt
in. Both the principal gains and losses were
found under this classification. Railroad
stocks were sluggish throughout and for the
most part were heavy,
The decline in the stock market seemed to
be in part due to the unsettling influence of
the erratic fluctuations in Tennessee Coal.
Prices of that stock wcro up and down all
day, and operators in the market wore at a
loss to determine whether the terms of the
proposed merger or the distress of an uncov
ered short interest was responsible for the
wavering motion of the stock.
The passage through one house of the New
York Legislature of the stock transfer tax and
the belief that Its enactment into law was
certain had some revived influence in the un
certain mood of the speculation. The inquisi
torial tendency of legislation and public policy
toward corporations and the prevalence of In
vestigations into their affairs came in for
consideration. The embittered controversy
which has sprung up in the administration of
the Equitable Life Assurance Society and the
Investigation thus prompted has the effect
of emphasizing this impression.
The very prominence of the low grade In
dustrial stocks, even where they give evi
dence of strength. Is regarded as an evidence
that the high grade stocks have exhausted
their resource for an advance and begets sus
picion of the stability of the whole market.
Some of the day's abortive movement in the
better class of stocks was suspected of being
manipulative and designed to offset this char
artcrirtic of the market. The absence of
long expected announcements, which have been
supposed simply to await the conclusion Of
the Northern Securities case, induces a feel
ing of suspense and distrust over the extent
to which mysterious allutlons and rumors have
been allowed to Influence great speculative
movements In varloos stocks. - I ivere - m a
feeling that some of these mysteries must
either be dissolved soon or be replaced y
effective new factors If prices are to be sus
tained at their present high level.
The tone of the money market shows som
relaxation In consequence of the completion
of the April settlement, but not to the extent
that sanguine e peculators hoped, and the pos
sibility 1 now faced of a considerable pro
longs: Ion of higher rates of interest. It is
evident that many Important capital Issues j
have been planned to take advantage of the
normal accumulation of reserves at this time,
of the year, both here and abroad, and this
class of requirements will, of course take
precedence In stock market borrowing.
The most substantial sustaining Influence In
today's market was the heavy accumulation
of United States Steel stocks. Reported large
buying of nig Iron by that corporation Is a
repetition of previous conditions, but the lack
of response in the securities of the company
has been the cause of dlseattefaetioa In the
market. The rise In the Southern Railroad
group was attributed to the enlarged cotton
movement and to th advantages to accrue
from a rising scale of freights en. Iron, due to
a sliding adjustment In harmony with iron
prices. London was a eeller of stocks In this
market to an extent sufficient to harden the
rate for exchange by reason of the demand
for remittances in payment. There was sus
tained strength in a few of the industrials,
but the persistent heaviness of the railroads
made the closing irregular.
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, par
value. $4,610,000. United States bonds were all
unchanged on call.

More Activity Is Reported Receipts
of Wool Increasing, but Prices
Not Yet Established.
SAN FRANCISCO. April 4. (SpecIal.)-Local

remain as before. The market, which has been
rather quiet, is showing a little more actlvlty

the country on private terms. No definite
local quotations have been established. The

The Chicago market being closed, local spec
