Applicants for Fire Department Will
Undergo Examinations.
The Civil Service Commission yester
day outlined Its regulations for appli
cants to the police force, the flre "de
partment and for engineers In the City
Hall and the street department. Appli
cants for positions as engineers -will
be examined April 15, except for the
fire department, for -which there -will
be special tests April 22. Patrolmen
will be examined April 29.
The regulations for policemen are
that no applicant shall be less than five
feet S or more than six feet four inches
tall, and weigh less than 150 pounds
or more than 225, and be more than S5
years old. Applicants tflll be required
to run 100 yards in 15 seconds and take
a simple examination.
The examinations of applicants for
the fire department will take place on
Multnomah Field and will be in a meas
ure spectacular. Applicants -will be re
quired to climb an aerial ladder for 70
feet and to climb an Inclined ladder five
rounds hand over hand; to carry a
dummy weighing 125 pounds up and
down the Inclined ladder; to jump Into
a net from the second story and to run
SO yards In 13 seconds.
Henry W. Miller In Custody.
Henry "YNT. Miller, under indictment for
complicity in the land frauds, and re
cently brought from San Francisco,
waived arraignment before Judge Bel
linger yesterday and entered a plea of not
guilty.
Falling to secure bonds, he is still In
the custody of the County Jailer.
Held on Serious Charge.
F. H. Iolan and Jessie Boland appeared
before Justice Held under a warrant
charging them with adultery. Their pre
liminary examination was set for April
6, and In the meantime they will be held
In custody at the County Jail. Sophia
Dolan, wife of F. H. Dolan, appears as
the complaining witness.

WEATHER CONDITIONS.
No rain has fallen In the Northern Pacific
States during- the lant 24 hours, and the weath
er is generally clear, except along the imme
diate coaet, where more or less cloudiness pre
vails. It is decidedly warmer east of the Cascade
Mountains, and -also in the Great Salt Lake
basin.
The indications are for fair weather in this
district Wednesday, except alone the Immediate
coast, where showers are probable.
