MONEY DOES NOT RELAX
RESTRAINING INFLUENCE IN
STOCK .MARKET.
Expectation of Decision in Securities
Case Affects Union Pacific, Erie
and New York Central.
NEW YORK. April 3. Aa element In the
speculation which was ready to proceed on
the assumption that with the April money
market fctitements out of tho way there was
no reason for any further restraint on an ac
tive demand for stooks. made its presence felt
today. Some restraint, nevertheless, made It-
solf felt in the day's operations, as was
shown by tne halting and irregular manner
of the prlco movement and by the moderate
volume of the transactions. The activity In J
the railroad list was concentrated in a few
stocks. In the industrial department there
was manifest a .spirit of adventure which
wandered freely through the list.
The first animation In the railroad list was
awakened by renewed consideration of the
topic of the Northern Securities case. The re
port was circulated early in the 'day that the
decision ia this case was to be handed down
on the reassembling of the court at noon after
the Spring receei. Union Pacific sprang Into
prominence, aa had been the case whenever
this subject is actively discussed in the stock
market. There was a renewed assumption that
the final disposition of this case was the event
awaited for the putting into force of long
rumored projects ef a Union Pacific and New
York Central combination. In today's market
larsc buying of tho Erie stocks was executed
in sueh a way as to give the appearance of
coming from the same source as the Union
Pacific and New Torts Central buying. The
effect was a leap to tho conclusion that Erie
was to be Included in the supposed combina
tion. The first report from the Supreme Court
after noon indicated a stay, which might in
volve a further Indefinite delay, and prices
In the group had a. flharp setback.
In the industrial department tho Southern
Iron stocks were again conspicuous in connec
tion with the merger report. The United States
Steel stocks were comparatively quiet. . There
were rumors of a dividend in National Biscuit
and reports of a successful outcome of a. vig
orous competition with a rival. The New Tdrk
public utilities suffered from the imminence
of a decision on the constitutionality of the
New York franchise tax.
The rooet Important restraining Influence
was found In the money market. Conditions
there did not relax so completely as had been
hoped would occur after April 1. Sterling
exchange also was .well maintained, although
discounts dropped in London, where the after
effects of the quarterly settlements are always
felt very promptly. The weekly statement of
the Imperial Bank of Germany showed the
extent of the quarterly settlements by the
huge changes In its principal items, cash on
hand increasing $32,360,000. while tho other
securities were increased $65,600,000 and the
note circulation was expanded $S3.143,000.
The immediate future of our money market
is doubtless dependent on the rapidity with
which the enormous requirements on foreign
banks are readjusted.
Reports of railroad, traffic and of domestic
conditions continued .highly encouraging. The
stock market closed irregular and at top prices
lor very few stocks. '
Bonds were Irregular. Total sales, $5,2S0,-

European Markets Also Influenced
by the Outlook In the Amer

CHICAGO. April 3. At the start weakness
characterized trading In the wheat pit. Prices
at Liverpool were 6c lower, chiefly because
worlds shipments wero larger than expected,
and because of a let-up la the European spot
demand. The foreign market was partly In
fluenced by continued favorable crop condi
tions In the American wheat belt. Another
factor that worked well In the hands of local
bears was the report or large receipts of
wheat at Minneapolis and Duluth arrivals
today at the two points being SCO cars.
against 398 cars the corresponding day In

was continued fine jrrowlmr weather In the
West and Southwest. Sentiment changed sub
sequently on an official prediction of colder
weather throughout the West, with freezing
temperature In, Kansas and Nebraska. Ac
