The Finns, who have lost no love for their oppressors, the Russians, have a concerted movement all over America to raise money with which to help out the Socialists in the Empire of the Czar. The three Finnish societies of Portland gave an entertainment last night in Upchurch Hall. Seventeenth- and Marshall streets, to this end, and the thlnss which were said by the quiet-voiced speakers would have made a St. Petersburg censor sick. There was nothing vindictive about the addresses but there was shown a cool resolve to help out the Russians, who are fighting for liberty, with all their hearts. Most of the addresses were in Finnish, but the audience was composed of the same nationality. The appaluse was' of a serious kind and pounded nails into the coffins of Grand Dukes. All were in dead ly earnest, and though they sat quietly and reserved with their children on their knees and their wives by their side, the men. when fired by the realization of the situation in Russia, as portrayed by the able speakers, showed toy the hardness m their blue eyes that they could fight a fearful battle of freedom. In the midst of the sober discourse a curtain was drawn aside and eight young women and eight young men came out upon the floor before the audience and stepped off the Finnish national dance. They were picttfresque dancers, the red cheeked girls in their white waists, black bodices and skirts, with red laces and trimmings, and the young men, fair-haired, in white shirt-sleeves, black vests, blue knee-breeches, red stockings and red laces in their shoes. They danced what appeared to the uninitiated a sort of quadrille, but full of new movements and pretty stops, well done, too, as the maidens arched their insteps and swung abouton their toes. The programme was a long one and the audience swelled till there was a rich vein of silver in the door-keeper's bowl and the tickets having been all sold out, were gathered up again and sold out once more. The money collected will be sent to a Socialist paper in Geneva, through the hands of -which it will come to the agents of the Russian revolution, and will be used, not towards helping terrorism or Nihilism, but to educate the Russians in the principles of Socialism, which the Finnish societies of Portland believe to be the road to freedom for Russia.
