JJ THE MOCKING OREGONIAN. TUESDAY, MARCH 28, l&Oo. 13 DROPS AS DAY ENDS Market Opens Well, but Pro m ises'Not Fulfilled. PARIS IS DEMANDING GOLD Washington Intimates That With drawal of Government Deposits to Extent of $20,000,000 May Be Expected. NEW YORK. March 27. An extraordinary play of quotations In a large, number of. low grade Industrials and specialties kept u"p coma appearance of strength for the greater part of today's cession of the stock exchange, and served to tieguise the realizing: that was go ing on in the more substantial stocks. But the market gave way late -in the day, and fell sharply to a. low level. The early strength kept alive tlie hope that the great Teelllnency developed last week on themM wsek decline was a heraW of the strong re sumption of the advance. There was a generally confident expectation among professional operators that the dubious point In the speculation had been forced into the background by last wek demonstration of the resisting power of the market. The halting tendency which - developed in the course of th t-day's trading was not clearly traceable to any change in conditions or outlook, but the disinclination to. follow up last week's recovery with further large buy ing was very clearly defined. The miscellaneous collection of stocks which hot up from time to time while efforts were making to hold the market were not the sub ject of any information either special r gen eral to account for the movement. The ab ene of explanation and 'the lack of any com mon ground of interest between them were th cause of some- suspicion of the' movement. X Hit of from 25 to 30 might be compiled, many of which rarely appear In the trans actions which were lifted from 1 to nearly & points. Some influence is given to the money outlook as the factor checking active speculation, and especially with the April 1 requirement now Bear at hand. Quarterly payments on that date will add to the normal -.monthly re quirements. The renewal t)f demand for gold on the part of Paris, which came into force In .London on Saturday, is regarded as sig nificant, and modifies' considerably the pros pects in the exchange market. Any tendency for gold to move to New York for London will be restrained by an accompanying de mend from Paris. An intimation came from Washington also that further calls for the withdrawal of Government deposits might be expected' to the extent of $15,OO0.OO to $20, 000,000, as opportunity might offer, without .Ikelihood of harm to the business interests of the country, this measure being considered desirable to be completed before a possible money stringency in the Fall. The tone of foreign markets was regarded as renewing the doubts of an immediate peace, whih was felt with growing confidence to be Imminent last week. A bad effect was produced by thf decidedly weak showing of net earnings for February presented by Ate lton, the decline in gross earnings being ag gravated by a rise in operating expenses so as to induce and decrease In net earnings for the month of $814,000. more than 42 pec cent. Report of railroad traffic generally continued highly encouraging on the part of the railroad official, offerings of all classes continuing large, while favorable weather conditions en able the handling of the business at lowest possible cost of operation. Stocks, however. showed increasing signs of weakness as the day progressed and closed at practically the lowest of the. das. Union Pacific's deollne xan to S points, and many other standard stocks fell from l'-to 2 point. Bonds were Irregular. "Total sales, par value, $4, 820,000. United States Ss coupon and the jjew 4s coupon declined y, and the new 4s reg istered per cent on call. STOCK QUOTATIONS. ClosiBg Sales. High. Low. bid. Under East River Bed. NEW YORK, March 27. Blown through break in a tunnel unHer Kast River by an explosion today, carried to the sur face of the water and shot 20 feet Into the air. Richard Creedon. a. laborer, was rescued only slightly hurt. His escape from death seemed almost miraculous. Three o his companions were rescued In the tunnel and carried out, all painfully but not seriously lnjursd. The men were at work. In. the forward compartments of the railroad tunnel un der Hast River, between Brooklyn and the Battery, which la to bo used even tually to connect the Manhattan lines with tho Brooklyn Subway lines. Two tubes aido by side are In process o con struction. The Brooklyn end oC one of the tubes had been extended about 15 feet behind the end of the nlcr line at the foot of Joralemon street. Twe'nty-two men wero at work In tho tunnel when the accident occurred. Creedon. and his three compan ions were working under a high pressure of air. In a compartment back or them IS other men were at work. This second compartment was not affected by the ac cident, as there Is a bulkhead between them. Creedon was the first to ascertain that the roof of the tunnel was leaking and that the air was rushing out Into tho bottom of East River, which was about 40 feet deep above them. With sand bags he attempted to plug up the leak, but as he did eo the whole-roof was blown out and the tremendous force of the com pressed air drove Creedon out through the hoje. The upward rush of air car ried him to tho surface In a twinkling and he shot into the air with great force. Bystanders quickly rescued him .from the water. He was considerably bruised and shaken up, but was not dangerously hurt. Bystanders who saw the man shoot to the surface say that hq was shot 20 feet Into the air from the level of the water and that his startling appearance severe ly frightened several Italian laborers on a near-by pier, and that they took to flight. Hte companions were dragged back through th tunnel by workmen from the next compartment. HARGIS GANG ALL INDICTED Four Breathitt County Feudists In volved in Cockreli Murder. "LEXINGTON, Ky..
