Decline Reaches Point Where .Sharp Resistance Is Encountered Good Buying Demand. . NEW YORK. March 24. There was a pro nounced upturn In the course of prices on the stock exchange again today, which was undoubtedly due in part to the closing up of short contracts put oat on these declines dur ing the week. Yesterday's market already fbowed symptoms that the decline had run to a point where effective resistance was en countered and suJJlclent new buying demand r was met to support price. Bears with un covered short contracts accepted the warn ing and bought to cover vry generally to day. There was at the tame time a marked re vival in the circulation of rumors y?t the same class and lor the most part ' identical in farm with those which -have already served many times to excite a demand for stocks. The strength of New York Central. Union Pacific and Northwestern was a notable case In point. The information, disseminated on the break .yesterday was that control of Union Pacific had passed from Its present hands. Today the Information was renewed that buying of the best character, .namely, in the Interest of persons already In control, was conspicuous in both New York Central and Union Pacific News of rumors 6f this char acter are of as great effect in the excite ment to speculation as the most explicit an nouncement of plans affecting the control or operation of a property. The Southern Iron combine was another project which was paraded before tho imag ination jbt speculators with proved cnect. as shown by the wide movement In stocks of that group. The long-time reports of a merger of lead Interests was another effective Instru ment in the upward movement of prices. OB and new dividend rumors also played their part, stocks in the rubber Industry being espe cially effected. The Metropolitan stocks had the benefit of hopes of sucooss In securing contracts for further subways In efforts mak ing on behalf of these interests. Colorado Fuel was still In demand on the strength of its subscription rights to new securities. A glance over the list will show tho Important part played In the recovery Dy siocjw iuub specified as under individual Influences. The reversal of sentiment ot tne general market situation was attributed to subsidence of fears of stringent money, ine neaoiong plunge In the price of foreign exchange was the principal factor In the change or senti ment. The Indications thus given of the freedom with which foreign money re sourced are becoming available to tho New York market Droved greatly reassuring. The price of exchange was pronounced to be with in measurable distance 01 tne goia jrapon point and It was fait that actual need for money here would lead promptly to an In ward movement of gotd. Account was taken, however, of the accompanying sharp drop la the Sterling exchange rate at Paris. wh'ch has fallen three centimes on tne pouna la two days past, showing a consideralbe In crease in tne cemana irom uai wuih u London. Estimates of the domestic currency movement indicate a considerable loss In casn by tne banks on the week's movement, which Is practically measured by the Subtreasurya absorption of $3,786,000 up to Thursday night. But tho sharp liquidation of the week In stocks and the large resort had to foreign leaders Is expected to result In" a large con traction in the volume of loans of the banks with eonseauent benefit to the surplus Item. Tho allotment to American subscribers of a full half of the new $150,000,000 Japanese loan, -was regarded as a highly gratifying evi dence of the abundance of capital resources ai command in this market. The nroflt-taking in the last hour was weu absorbed, and the markt closed strong and animated at thebst prices of the day. Bonds were strong. Total sales, par vaiue. $4,420,000. TACOMA. Wash.. March 24. Special. Telegraphic advices from New York received yesterday by Isaac Plncus & Son stated that hop exporters In that market were payle, 27 cents. Tks market was quoted firmer. To? day the market had further advanced, export-' ers paying 2S cents. This buying by exporters is considered the most gratifying development In the market 1n many weeks. It shows that the English brewers, unable to buy hops at home, because of the lately termed pool, of necessity must make their purchases on this side. The quan tity of hops remaining untold In America is limited, and as many of the brewers In this country have yet to fill their season's, re quirements. It Is certain that the foreign de- mand will snd prices upward. Good Offers for Orejroa Heps. SALEM. Or.. March 24. (Special.) Krebs Bros., of this xlty, has received Information that London has begun buying American hops again, and that sales are being made In New York at 27 cents. They also report thai 5 cents has been offered for the Buchanan crop at Cornelius, and the same price for the Sewell crop at Hlllaboro. New York Cottoa Market. Bearish Advices Keep Prices' Down in Chicago Grain Pit Market is' Not Supported. ' CHICAGO. '.March 24. From the cutset the wheat market was under the Influenco of In creased shipments from Argentina and con talnced excellent weather conditions in the United States. May wheat opened c down, at $I.121.12& July was off c. at 00e91c. On the Initial break, a fair demand developed for the July delivery caus ing an advance to 90c Trading In May, however, was dull. Large receipts In the Northwest and extreme weakness at Minne apolis accounted for the Inactivity of May. As trading progressed, sentiment In the pit be came more bearish. The main consideration apparently was a growing belief that the Fall sewn crop of wheat would prove of vast pro portions. Advices from various sections of the Winter wheat belt reiterated reports of favorable progress In the growth o the plant. A St. Louis trade Taper's weekly report on crop progress was construed as especially bearish. The condition of the eroo. accord ing to this report. Is excellent for this time of year, there being few Indications of dam age. A feature of the report was a refer ence to the fact that the plant Is growing where there has been failure to germinate earlier In tho season. With practically no support, prices steadily Jccllned until May had touched $1.11. July sold off to- 89. Late in the day some recovery took place on a report that the leaders In the May deal had decided to rally to the support of that option. The market, however, closed rather weak, with May at $1.12. Final quotations on July were at 00pT90c. a less of 6c Considering the weakness of wheat, the corn market showed consideralbe. strength. Higher cables gava the market, a firm start. Th market held firm the entire, day, closing prlees being almost at the highest po'Jit. May closed at 4884Se. a loss of &c - Sentiment in the oats pit was rather bear ish as a result of warmer weather. May closed unchanged at 30c.
