The active demand for hops that character

week. At the same time there Is less press

actions have come to light In the past few
day. Some orders are on hand, but can
,only be filled at conceeMons. as Easterners
are offering but 24 cents f. o. b. here.
Quiet conditions' also prevail at other points.
New York mall advises of March 16 said:
Xo advices of Importance were received
from the Coast or up the State, and it was
inferred that these markets were holding
quiet but steady. Locally the market was
without new features. Business was quiet,
there being no trading between dealers, and
the demand "from brewers was slow. Prices
were reported unchangd. Foreign markets
were reported without change.
A letter from Xurnberg-Saaz, dated Febru
ary SI. said:
Owing to exceedingly unfavorable weather
and on acoeunt of the lasting Winter, in
quiry from home consumption and abroad has
decreased, and prices are at buyers' favor.
Quotations for choice grade qualities are ln
fluerced too and tame are to be had under
Trice, as there are some speculators who are
forced to sell- It is thought, however, that
there is still a good many requirements to All
by breweries and therefore business will be
reactive, when good weather sets in.
Some contracting has been made in Califor
nia recently for Fall delivery at 10 cents. Thf.

MARKET GIVEN SUPPORT
EFFORT MADE TO HOLD PRICES
ON AN EVEN KEEL.
Renewed Rumors of Plan for Holding
Company for Vanderbilt
Properties.
NEW YORK. March 20. The effects were
perceptible in today's stock market of soma
benevolent supervision, which had the effect
of discouraging aggression by the bear party.
The buying which cheeked the decline, how
ever, hesitated to follow prices when they
ran npward and speculative operators who
attempted to pnsh the adjAnce found them
wves in scanty company. The result was a
period of dullness in the trading and a nar
rowing In the fluctuations, prices showing a
tendency to settle to about last week's clos
ing. The Impression was produced of an 'ef
fort to hold the present situation on an even
keel, while awaiting the result of some of
the doubtful factors In the outlook.
The party of reaction was somewhat ag
gressive in the early part of the day nntil !
checked by the measures of tupport In the
market. With the reaction checked, some of
tho old rumors of deals showed renewed vi
tality, notably that alleging a plan for a
holding company for the Vanderbilt property
and for the combination of New York Cen
tral. Northwestern and Union Patgpc The
Northern Securities case also showM a rem
nant of Its strong hold on. speculative senti
ment when the intimation was circulated that
the Supreme Court was likely to conclude the
case by issuing Its mandate today for the
carrying out of the decision. The renewed
signs of depression shortly after noon were
clearly due to the news of the adjournment
of the court over the recess without Issuing
Its mandate. About the same time there ap
peared official disclaimers of the New York
Centralj rumors, also pointing out the absence
of directors to secure a quorum of the board.
Such disclaimers have often been issued in
the midst of the most excited periods of late
without attracting the slightest attention.
Their greatest effect today was an index of
the subdued spirit of the speculation.
Attention converged in the money market
owing to the low state of the bank reserves
and the expected growth of ' an interior de
mand for currency. The extreme activity In
all line of business itself promises to In
crease this demand and any material Inroad
on money supplies will be expected to affect
the stock market.
The tone of, reviews of traffic conditions by
railway officials was fairly enthusiastic, the
only complaint being of a. shortage of cars.
Stocks of merchandise are reported low. owing
to former talk of reordering, and orders are
reported to be coming now in such volume as
to promise a glut of railroad traffics for some
time to come. Somft: renowed credence, was
given to the story of the merger of Southern
iron companies. The railroad equipment
stocks were in demand. - Intimations of a
newly-found value of the Canadian. Paclflo
lands by reason of oil . discoveries caused an
extended riso in Canadian Pacific stock. South
ern iron t locks closed strong and the market
closed strong and at the best prices of the
day.

compared with those of the corresponding
week a year ago, prices in foreign grain
markets showed gains. The decrease In
tha world's movement was the main reason
for the initial firmness here. Commission
bouses were generally active buyers of the
future deliveries. The May option, however,
was under considerable selling pressure, a
number of prominent longs being reported
atclve on the selling side of the market. One
reason given for the desire to unload May
was an" Increase In receipts Northwest, ar
rivals at Minneapolis and Ouluth being larger
than on either the corresponding day last
week or a year ago. Later, the selling' be
came more general when figures showing the
total primary receipts were posted on bulle
tin boards. The total movement today in the
United States was nearly 100,000 bushels In
excess of what It was a year ago. The show
ing on primary receipts was a hard blow to
the theory of depicted reserves and was
largely responsible for the weak undertone
of the market. Alter selling at D2Hc shortly

for May was reached at SLHH- July sold
