During- the late ses sion of the Legislature they strutted about the Capitol at Salem, spreading their fine feathers. Senator to Be Besieged. President Roosevelt has shown a de sire to allow Senator Fulton a voice in the 'dispensing of patronage in Oregon. Consequently the Senator doubtless will be hotly besieged when he arrives in Portland next week. He expects to "start homeward from "Washington to morrow. The candidates to whom he 1 indebted for support for his Senator ship are: T. M. DImmick. J. JL Shelley, Ira B. Riddle and J. M. Hansbrough, all of whom voted for Senator Fulton unwaveringly from first to last. J. T. Bridges, Register, and J. O. Booth, Receiver, have been suspended by order of Secretary Hitchcock for alleged Ir regularities which the Federal grand Jury will investigate probably next month, and from which the Govern ment will s ndcavor to secure an indict ment. Appointments May Be Made Soon. That the new appointments will be made very soon is regarded as quite ji rob able Inasmuch as the Land Office at Roseburg is practically closed and business is accumulating. Pending the outcome of the prosecution, however, the business of the office could be turned over to Surveyor-General Daly at Portland. Section 98 of the laws re lating to dutlos of officers of the Land Office. say: 'The President is authorized, in any case where lie thinks the public Interest may require it, to transfer the duties of Register and Receiver in any dis trict, to the Surveyor-General of the surveying district in which such land 'district is located."
