THE MOBNIKG OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, MARCH 17, 1905.
AT THE THEATERS
What the Press Agents Say.
"Joan of Arc."
"Joan of Arc," at the Columbia this
week. Is one of the largest of the ambi
tious productions of the season at this
theater. The scene -where Ivan dashes
In on a beautiful -white charger sur
rounded by soldiers and retainers Is one
of special beauty and never falls to call
forth storms of applause- The picture Is
indeed a striking one. Another thrilling
scene Is the fall from a high tower into
the moat below, and it Is the -wonder of
the audiences nightly the great nerve
that Miss Countiss displays in risking so
dangerous a fall for the sake of realism.
"Joan of Arc" -will continue all -week,
with matinee Saturday and Sunday.
Seats for "Monsieur Beauealre."
Tomorrow (Saturday) morning at 10
o'clock the advance sale of seats -will open
lor Creston Clarke, who comes to the
Marquam Grand Theater next Tuesday
night, March 21, In the beautiful roman
tic drama, "Monsieur Beauealre." It will
be remembered that this delightful ro
mance adapted from Booth Tarklngton's
famous book, proved one of Richard
Mansfield's strongest hits, and our peo
ple's faith In the artistic ability of Cres
ton Clarke Is sure to be rewarded in his
portrayal of a character that in every
way is calculated to fit his subtle talents.
Sweden Gives Way to Ireland.
Ben Hendricks has kindly allowed the
Ancient Order of Hibernians to use the
Empire Theater tonight, but he will
finish his very successful engagement
with a matinee and night performance
tomorrow. In his play, "Ole Olcson."
Mr. Hendricks will sing six new and
original songs, their titles being "Scan
dinavia," "Pass It On." "Philopene,"
"Northland Lullaby." "Fair Land of
Sweden" and "That's My Friend."
Last Performance at Matinee.
Tomorrow (Saturday) afternoon at 2:15
o'clock, the last performance of "The Vir
ginian" will be given at the Marquam
Grand Theater. There will not be a per
formance tomorrow (Saturday) night.
COMING ATTRACTIONS.
"The Moonshiner's Daughter."
A play that has never been seen In
Portland, and one which had a New
Tork production, comes to the Empire
Theater for one solid week, starting Sun
day matinee. "The Moonshiner's Daugh
ter'' contains a story of noble heroism
and a recital of brave deeds. A romantic
love story, cleverly told, runs through
the entire course of the play, which adds
utich to the merit of the entertainment.
"Thelma" at the Columbia.
The delightful and picturesque love
play, "Thelma," will be given at the Co
lumbia all next week starting Monday
night. It will be the first real first-class
production of the play in Portland, and
special care will be given to the charm
ing scenic effects. The entire Columbia
Company will appear in the cast in ideal
parts, and "Thelma" will be one of the
gems of the season.
AT THE VAUDEVILLE THEATERS
Grand's Great Bill.
The bill at the Grand may truthfully
be said to be great. "With the Japanese
troupe alone the performance would be
meritorious, but when added to that is
the Frances ca Redding Company In the
most legitimate comedy ever seen out
side of New Tork City, and De Coe, the
-wonderful balancer, together with six
other strong features, there Is no wonder
that people are satisfied. The great and
thrilling ride for life by Sam Klchl has
become the talk of the town.
Real Good Ones at Star.
Those babies of Hugh Emmet will make
any one laugh. Emmett is at the Star
this week, so that theater Is the merri
ment center. He is a ventriloquist with
feats that are marvelous as well as laugh
able. Inez Scott, with her novelty ser
pentine dance, a most gorgeous spectacle,
is a stellar attraction. So are the Bunts
Brothers, great hand-balancers; Sadie
Reynolds, the mimic; Mustard & Cook,
vocalists; Lloyd Spencer, the. all-round en
tertainer. The projectoscope is always
good.
Chinese Burglar Captured.
Chinese burglars are very scarce, but
Ton Chong is said to be one. He was
locked up In the City Jail last night on
a charge of attempted burglary, after a
sensational chase of several blocks.
Ton was caught In the act of squeezing
himself through a side window in the
residence of M. B. Runkle, a railroad man.
at 431 Alder street, last night at 10:30
o'clock. When he found he was in danger
of capture he took to his heels, running
down Alder street. Mr. Runkle called to
stop him, but he ran until C. T. Banks
laid hold of him. Banks Is a clerk in the
registry department of the local Post
office. Captain of Police Moore was notified and
dispatched a patrol wagon to the scene.
Ton was attired in costly garments, and
why he wished to enter upon a burglar's
career is a mystery.
