THE MOBKiyg OHEGONIAy, THURSDAY. MAUCH , 16, 1905. 13 NGREASE IN TRADE Spring Demand in Jobbing Lines Shows Improvement COUNTRY PRODUCE IS ACTIVE Hops Moving Freely, but at Prices Unsatisfactory to Growers No . Trading in Wheat Oriental Inquiry for Flour Slow. From grocery Jobbers come the re part of a gradual increase Jn the Spring trade, which for 90R:e reason has been backward this year. In other lines not much Improvement is shown, except jn the handling: of fresh produce. Hops have been more active, but at weak prices. Nothing is do ng in wheat and very little In flour- The wool market is firm, with contract ing having ceased, probably for the eeason. There is still a. good demand In California for' choice Oregon potatoes, but the (situation here is iess satisfactory, Colorado stock is again coming in. Tho onion season is nearly at an end. Some excitement has been caused in the egg market by active buying by speculators for fmg. Butter is firm yet, but receipts -e on the increase. X HEAT Dealers report that there have been no transactions in the wheat market in the I as, week. There la no Eastern or California drrr.and at the moment, and export tradhtg is ct of the question. The acceptance of red Oregon wheat on contract at Chicago has had 3 appreciable effect on prices here, as there Is ret to exceed &00.O00 bushels of this grade remaining in the Northwest. In the absence of trading prices arc wholly nominal. Dealers race the talue of club wheat on track at I'prtland at S2S3c. But It would probably be impossible to buy from farmers under Soc "Valley wheat ia still quotable at S7c here, i whi.e some millers throughout the Valley are jPay'ng from 2c to Sc above this figure for erna.l lets. Word is received from "Walla "Walla that ealea of wheat for the season in that district have closed, but shipping is far more arthe than for a long time. The large grain companies, which have been buying oon- tnucusly through the "Winter, are beginning to throw their purchases on the Eastern mar- Ikrts, and the demand for cars is almost as great as earlier in the "Winter. Some grain la gc!ng to the Sound and Portland, but the greater part is destined to Eastern markets. Foreign crop and market conditions are sum- roarized by the London ,oorre6pondent of the ! Northwestern Miller, in the issue of March 8, as follows: The wheat markets have been rather unset tled this week. On the one hand, the retter- laled cabled reports from India affirming that serious damage has been done to the crop. Iepeclal'y in the United Provinces, have tend- led to strengthen prices, but on the other hand. the liberal shipments from Argentina and the I unexpected large supplies from Russia effect ually kept buyers in check. There is now little doubt Ohat the Austra lian crop Is at least 33 per cent less than the abnormally large one of last year, from which bout 5,000,000. quarters were exported; but. iltbough the surplus for Europe this year may Inot exceed. 1,000,000 quarters, practically the whole of it will evidently be shipped In the first four or Ave months of the year. The latest advices from Argentina, confirm previous statement that In Santa Fe and Cordoba the yield Is fully -30 per cent les than Haat year's, so that, after making allowances Ifor an Increased yield In the province of Juenos Ayrcr. It 1 tolerably -clear that- the fotal crop will bo at least 2,000.000 quarters less than last year, when 15.000,000 quarters er ereaped and 11,360,000 quarters exported. lere again, however, although tho surplus say be 2,000,000 quarters less than last year. it is still a large -one, and will for the most part e ehipped Jn the first six months of the k-ear, thus guaranteeing a total weekly move sent from that country. "With regard to Russia, we are still to some fxtent In doubt as to the probable extent of ber future shipments. That there is plenty If wneat tn the country Is not to be doubted, Notwithstanding the liberal exports of tho last Ilx months; but there is a very serious lack of lolling stork on the railways, owing to th trolongatlon of the war, and it is becoming triaentiy Increasingly difficult to move the rain to the seaboard. Another effect of the far is an expected large decrease in the area own with Spring wheat, which' is by far the norc Important crop In Russia. The state of the Indian crop is. of course, of jeneral importance with regard to the future. suse Indian wheat in the past 12 months by its abundance and relative, cheapness en the chief factor in enabling Euronean fcarketa to Ignore to & great extent the very HER prico or American wheat. If. as Is aimed by some authorities, the Indian wheat ap prove to be 33 -per cent less than last wr. it would still be an average crow, and peld a. fair surplus, but one not large enough be attracted by low prices. I For the present calendar year. 1IKI3. it Is robaole that Argentina, India and Australasia EHI not supply more than 19.500.000 quarters, usslan will also probably ahip less, so that a pry serious condition might result if Amer- ft In the coming season should again find self without a large surplus. IFLOUR. FEED. ETC. The forelcn market Ir flsur Is unsatisfactory. It was expected at the Oriental demand; would revive- before Is. but thus far it has shown no signs of rakenlng. Some small orders ore arriving time to time, but there are no indications Bat outside steamers will be required for the iffio in the near future. The local situation good, with a strong demand and prices icily held. Pl'.feed la In a firm position, with light licks carried and prospects of a greater ty. as the Portland Flouring Mills have Inpcrarily closed down. Oats and barley are It and steady, a cargo of the latter cereal Lb shipped to Japan yesterday, a half cargo hay has also been went to China, and more to fellow The local market for hay ia dull. IOFS Two or three hundred bales, of hops changed hands this week at 23"4$r24c re is a limited demand from the East at jse figures and could buyers hammer prices rn st II farther, there would doubtless be it cxters;ve trading done. The Increased exports of 30.000 bales should hare do bearing on our domestic snar Tcets, because yew Tork State -produced rally this quantity mere than 1M3. and. besides our imports of Continental hope tfcow (reduced to American standard) 5000 bales increase. Un-,' der the above conditions, we will have plenty of heps to meet all requirement up to the next crop, unless England should appear again as buyers. Such is unlikely at present, con sidering that all foreign markets are dull and lower. During this time' in 1903 and ISO! It was figured out that the remaining stock was not sufficient to meet requirements, but instead there happened to be a surplus. Now again some are figuring on tho same lines for the 1004 growth, and the result remains to bo seen. Consumers do not Appear to be alarmed and are keeping values in chock by pursuing the "hand-to-mouth policy" which they have adopted successfully during the past seasons of high prices. Quite a large business was done In contracts for the coming 1305 crop at prices ranging from 17c to 20c to growers, according to dis trict, but sow the demand for these is limited. If nothing unforseen happens, the IKS Pacific Coast crop will be the largest on record, and there Is no telling how big It will be the year following, on account of the tremendous in crease In the acreage. FARM PRODUCE The San. Francisco potato market Is firm for fancy grades and weak for common stock. The local market, on the other hand, is better supplied with choice potatoes than it has been for some time past. This fact has caused a weaker tone here, but the balance would soon be restored had it not been for the unexpected arrival of ten cars of Col orado potatoes. These may yet- be diverted to outside points, which will relieve the local situation. Early seed potatoes are in strong demands at high prices. Onions are quiet, as the season Is Bearing an end. There are Increased receipts of butter from the country, and city creameries also report more cream coming in. The market still holds up firmly for best Oregon grades, but c. weak ening is expected soon. California butter has declined under an accumulation at San Fran cisco, and it Is likely that a part of the sur plus will be worked off here. Egg dealers are busily storing, as It is thought the bottom of the market has beea readied this Spring, though low prices may be looked for again in midsummer, when, how ever, the quality will not be so good. The cold storage operations, together with a fair shipping inquiry and a good local demand, which has been stimulated by the low prices, have together strengthened the market Re ceipts, however, are too heavy to permit of an advance in prices. The general quotation yesterday was 16c flat, though nme houses gave a range c above and below this figure. There Is a good market for poultry, and as receipts have been adequate, prices have held about steady, with 14c quoted as the top for chickens. GROCERIES. MEATS. ETC. No changes have taken place In the staple grocery list since tho last 10c deellne In sugar. Livestock receipts have been of average size, and firmer prices have been quoted at the Portland yards. Dressed pork and veal are quoted Arm on Front street, notwithstanding liberal receipts of the latter. PORTLAND MARKETS. Grain, floor. Pit traders and com mlseten houses were liberal seller at .-, frem the outset. - Trading was mainly in the July option. July was down a shade to "ig'ic at 92T4c to 93Hc During the first part of the day the demand was very slack and nri readily yielded to the selling pressure July oecuning to 82Vi92Sc May sold around $1.13. Later in the session a momentary- flash of strength carried May up to $M3T, and July to U2c Covering by shorts on bullish news from the. Northwest was responsible for the upturn. A report from Minneapolis asserted that large sales of flour had been made there. In addition, cash wheat markets In the North west were 'strong. Trade here soon lost all of Its strength, however, and the market doted weak, with May at $1.13 and July at 91T92c. Trading In the corn pit was again active but sentiment was inclined to bearishness. There was a rem nant of speculative spirit In the etock market today, but' it made itself manifest in a con f crvatlve way. The movement was hesitating and Irregular. The fluctuations for the greater part of the day, however, were above last night's level, and It was not until the latter part of the session that any considerable In roads were made on prices. Dispatches from Chicago detailing the enor mous outlay contemplated by the railroads for equipment for 19C5 caused a spurt in the va rious car and locomotive company stocks. There were published compilations of the ex tensive traffic to originate in the Southern ter Titer yon account of the activity In the South ern Iron trade and the large cotton crop to be moved, which led straightway to the marking up of stocks of the Southern group of rail ways. Foreigners were inclined to ell Americans again. It Is Interesting to note, however, that the London. Statist, la an extensive review of American prospects, asserts a conviction that a large movement of European capital into American Investments is Imminent, owing to the great expansion of productive facilities which promises to be required In this coun try. The Statist concludes: "In spite of the growth of Imports into and the drdlne in exports from the United States, -and also in face of the unprecedented expendi tures of American, tourists in Europe this year, there may in th not distant future signs that the gold which recently has been exported from New York to Europe will re turn to the United States." This operation would be brought about by a rise In meney rater here. The advance In the call loan rate today to 4 per cent seems to htve been Immediately due to the with drawal of Government Cepcaits at National banks, but .the effect cf the interior demand for currency Is looked for in New York by the cad of March, asd Is takes nmi accooat 'of In the current ontlook. Prices sold off sharply cn the rise In the call loan ratea and the day's advances were much, reduced or entirely wiped out. Active discussion of the proposed stocc transfer tax continued a discouraging factor In the trading. The market closed easy. In spite of the late rebound to 63 In Ontario & "Western.
