V . .. . THE MOKNING OREGONLAN, TUESDAY, MARCH 14, 1&05.-. I ENGLAND MAY BUY Inquiries for Hop Prices From Other Side. EFFECT OF GROWERS' POOL Portland Dealers Weli 8upp1ietf With Eastern Orders, but at Low Prices Sales Made In Past Two Days. Hop-growers end speculators are pinning their faith on the English pool as a. Jever by which prices can be raised. The latest ad vices from Now York say that inquiries are being- received by exporters ot that city lor the submission of samples on their remaining utocke. TblJS development has had a farorable influence on growers of New York State, and they aro holding their remaining supplies more firmly. The same sentimental effect is noticed to a degree in this market, but no such in quiries ar known to have been received here. On the other hand, Klaber. of Tacoma, who Is probably the leading exporter of the Coast, is on the selling side of the market. "While there is no direct result yet from the British comblna, it is conceded by all that should the English begin to buy on this side, prices will recessarlly go up. The lateet information of the progress of the pool in England Is contained in the Kentish Observer of February 28, Just received, which cays The adjourned meeting of the Hop-Planters Syndicate was held at the Bridge House Ho tel London, on Monday, and the proceedings were, of a very enthusiastic character. Mr. Frederick Neame, of Macknade, Favcreham, Trended, and the attendance numbered nearly e hundred, growers. The principal factors la the Borough were also present. The scheme rece ved the warm support of the growers present, and it was unanimously decided to form the organization and commence opera tions immediately. The growers forming the syndicate -will de liver into the hands of the managing commit tee all their unsold hops grown in 1004. the committee to arrange for the valuing of the heps according to quality and fixing of mlnl- rrum prices, which shall be conclusive and binding on all membeis. It 1 not Intended to change the present method of doing business through factors, but the latter are to" pay to the eradicate the proceeds cf the sale of all pooled hops. Instead of as heretofore settling with their individual growers. This is an en tirely new departure by British agricultural Interests, and Its Outcome will be watched with Interest by others than those directly Interested In the growing and using of hops. The stocks of English hops of the 1904 crop cttll in the hands of growers are estimated at 40,000 to 45,000 pockets, and of theee 20.000 pockets were, at once turned Into the pool with indications that within a short period the bulk. If not the whole of the balance. would follow suit. In any case, the formation Cf the syndicate means the present removal of about 50 per cent of the unsold stock of Eng lish hops from the market at prevailing prices. "We are informed that already the market has assumed a healthier tone as the result of tne rormauoa or tne syndicate. There are more Inquiries for hops, and rather more bus! nets to being done, the tendency of prices be ing upward. The new departure on the part cf the hop-growers has been well received by the trade generally, vhough not. of course, by the merchants. Business on the Borough market during the past week bas been very alow; there Is Ult pressure to sell on the part of small or needy holders and as- a result' prices have still fur ther declined, sales, having beenvrcsde at from 6 to 7 per cwt. -Brewers flnilntr that low offers were being accepted have ceased pur chasing in the belief that prices will still fur ther decline. Local dealers report a full supply of Eastern orders on. hand, but generally at prices below the market. Businees has been quite active, but generally between dealers. The principal transaction recently made with a grower was iciosed yesterday, when Seavey & Metzler bought 106 bales from E. J. Hutchcroft. of North Tarnhlll, at 24 cents. The same firm has bought altogether 300 bales In the last two days. LUIenthal Bros, have been Belling liberally, having disposed of BOO bales to Charles Llvosley and ISO bales to Catlln & Linn, at around 24 cents. Hanx J. Hart la reported to have purchased a lot of primes from J A. Jones, of Newberg. at 21 cents. The report of the United States Department cf Commerce for January shows the hop move ment to have been as follows: Pounds. .. 473. 40S .. 3.654.505 .. 291.143 ..13.S44.550 Imports for January ImpcrU for T months to Feb. 1., Expirto for January Exports for 7 months to Feb. 1., Kxnorts ft Imoerts for Januarv Exr ru f t Imports for 7 months to February 1.. Heavy Selling to Tak Profits Does Not Check the Advance Traffic Reports Good. NEW TORK. March 13. Tea whipping- up of the stock market on Saturday aronsed abun dant expectations of a further rls today-. The opening course of prices was In accord-' anes with this expectation. The heavy sell ing to take profits met this rise, and was strictly according: to established precedent. It was the subsequent tendency of the market for which experienced operators watch with keen attention to estimate the tone. This lat ter tendency confirmed the persisting strength which underlies the stock market and offered a fresh surprise In the absorptive power of the speculation and the unlimited confidence with which buying follows prices to higher flights. The usual weekly reviews of traffic condi tions by railroad officials serves as strong cor roboration of the confidence which Is felt in business conditions. A very free movement of all grades of traffic, and especially teel and Iron products, and of higher grades of mer chandise, were marked features of the move ment, and were cited as ground for ths faith expressed by railroad officials ot very prosper ous conditions for an indefinite period In the future. Improved weather conditions are help ing out the operating departments and facil itating tfce movement of freight, although the car supply is still Insufficient to accommodate ail of the business offered. Large earnings art to be looked Tor In consequence of the show ing in expected incoming reports. The determined ease of the money market is the most Important fostering influence on spec ulation. The heavy volume of bask clearings, which witnessed the trade activity in the country, continued purchases of new railroad bond Issues by banking houses, and the active csmand for money for speculation are without any Impression on the money market. Ths country's domtstlo exports for February showed a growth in corn exports sufficient to overcome the falling off in wheat and flour, leaving the low price of cotton alone responsi ble for the decline from last year's level. The confidence engendered by the strong elements of ths general businees and financial situation are undoubtedly the sustaining factors In the matter. Ths profit-taking which was constant today made a considerable Inroad in the market during the afternoon, and the subsequent rally did not recover all that ws yielded, but the closing- was strong and active. Bonds were firm. Total sales, $6,105,000. STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closing Sales. High. Low. bid.
