THE MORNING OBEGONIA2?, TUESDAY, MARCH 1005. 13. SALMON ADVANCES Market in Strong Position, Tendency Upward, LIGHT COAST PACK THIS YEAR Stocks of Chinooks and Sockeyes In Jobbers' Hands Are Small Few Pink Fish Will Be Packed Buyers Turn to Reds, The salmon situation Is outlined ax follow by the representative of one of tke prominent packing interests: TheNsonsuroptive demand for red Alaska eal raoa as represented by actual shipments to 'con sumers la January and February Is not very greatly In excess of the normal. The known shortage of stocks of fancy Columbia River salmon In the hands of jobbers, and the fact that all cblnook ' "ind sockeyes are virtually out of the market is" turning buyers attention to the red Alaska fcltuatlon, and they are Und ine conditions there decidedly strong. The certainty that not over SO canneries Kill be operated In Alaska this season Is In Itself sufficient guarantee of the strength of the Ituatlcm. Moat of these 30 canneries are- lo cated In the Bering Sea district, and In the far North, where SO per cent of the pack con torts of redfiih. Added to this Is the decided upturn in the English market, and all of these factors have combined to bring about a change of sentiment -which makes the situation uncom monly strong. As pink and cheap grades of salmon are very largely produced In South rati Alaska, where the pack will be curtailed this year, there Is a certainty of a greatly re duced pack of those qualities, and consequent 1 trade Usually eupplied with those will have .o rc&ort to redftsh. Another element of ?trejigtb la the clearing up of the many ru mors and reports which claimed to show that holdings outside of the Alaska Packers' Asso ciation wer very much larger than they proved actually to be. All of these thlng6 have tended to settle the question In the minds of those people who are posted, that sal moil not only occupies a strong position, but that present prices are lower than should pre- 'vail. Foreign Exchanges Take View That Russian Reverses Tend to " Bring Peace Nearer. NEW YORK. March 6. Wall street mala- talned today the more conservative attitude toward speculation which was assumed last week as the result of the sharp reactions In prices and the manifest disposition of holders to unload on the higher flights which prices took befcro the reaction. The- handing down 01 v " ouprcmr question of the Injunction against the distil hnHnn rf Vnrlhirn RMrurlltM axStS StllTCC of a dedsloa by the Supreme Court on the butloa of .Northern Securities asaats stirred the market, but tsat potent saoject w ut 1 modemte cStct comntred with the irenaea soovements which have followed the sugges tions and expectation of a decision In the past. There was aome revival or activity again m the stocks Immediately affected when the def inite character of the decision became better understood. The bearing of the decision on the trie respective interests ox me paruu io uo contest has "been largely modified by the progr resa ot events In the stock market. The Union Pacific contention against tni receipt of portions of both the Great Northern and Northern Pacific clocks In place of the North ern Pacific holdings first contributed to the merger was on the ground that this plan" would represent a large discrepancy In the valuation of assets as compared with its orig inal holdlnra- The trreat enhancement In market valuations which, has since occurred has gone far to settle this contention. The action of the market reflected the feeling that the . potentiality of the subject as a market factor was largely exhausted. Foreign markets again took the view teat Russian reverses tended to bring peace nearer, and a strengthening effect oa securities was the result. Our own market started C witn considerable show of strength, but the weight of offerings to be absorbed oa the ad vance becam effectively manifest at one. Such colntd of strength as developed after ward were due to special causes. Railroad traffic officials reported their only embarrass ment to be the finding of aufnelent cars to take care of traffic. Money on call fell to a lower Quotation, notwithstanding the poor back statement of Saturday, and foreign vs. chance declined la response to relaxing for eign money markets. The languid temper of the speculation reasserted 1 tacit In. the late TriBrtct. and -nrlces yielded easily, mamng a heavy closing. The bond market was duller aad rather heavy. Total sales, par value. $i,x.um. United States bonds were all unchanged on call. STOCK QUOTATION t. Closing Sales. Hlzh. Low. bid.
