March 3. Richard Somers Hayes, railroad capitalist. Is dead after a lingering illness at his home here. He was 59 years old. and had been ill more than two years. For over !0 years Mr. Hayes was promi nent In the railroad affairs of this coun try. In the course of that time- he was president, of the St. Paul &. Duluth Rail road Co., vice-president of the Missouri Pacific, president of the New York & Northern, and managing director of the Atchison. Topeka & Santa Fe. For many years he was prominently identified with railroads in Texas, to which state he went on leaving college. He was the engineer of construction of the Texas & Pacific and was also the receiver of the Texas International, being made president when the receivership was dissolved. Among the railroad companies of which he was a director are the Brooklyn Rapid Transit. Santa Fe. Prescott & Phoenix, Gulf. Colorado & Santa Fe, Delaware fi: Hudson, California Eastern Sonora, South ern California and the Long Island. Karowne, Famous Indian Runner. OGDENSBURG. N. Y., March 3.-Ka- rowne, a noted Indian athlete, is dead at the Caughnawaga reserve, aged 62 years. Forty years ago he had wide repute as a long-distance runner and la crosse player, and toured Europe with an all-Canadian team. ("Matt" Cullen Is the man who "tipped off" to the local detectives the name of James McCarthy, believed to be the man who se-cleverly robbed the fur store of S. SUverfield about one year ago. Cullen had been tending bar Here for some time prior to the robbery, and, according to his statement, Mc Carthy "planted" costly furs from the SUverfield establishment In Cullen's room for a time. Cullen went to the police with .this- Information. McCarthy waa arrested, but released. The police say Cullen had nothing to do with the robbery. He Is originally from Seattle.) Murder Is Suspected. BELLINGHAM, Wash.. March 3. Mur der is suspected as cause of the death of John Zdenake, whose body was found by Charles SodolUr. Wednesday, In a cabin near Custer. A letter was left saying lie had committed suicide. A few days before his death Zdenake deeded bis prop erty to Sodolik. Officers are Investigating the case. Tek Poison and Died. COTTAGE GROVE, Or.. Maxell 3.-(Spe- ciaU-Eva Davenport, a woman, who con ducted a public house here, died this morning from taking poison. A Coroner's Jury brought in a verdict of premeditated suicide. Skin-Graftlng at North Yakima. NORTH YAKIMA, Wash., March. 3. (Special.) What appears to be a success-fulrikin-grafting operation was performed here this morning by local physician on, Miss Bessie Goodwin. She was severely burned on thfr right hand in a laundry and all the skin on the palm came off. The physicians took small piece, of skin from the girl's leg and placed it on the bumed cart of the hand.
