IHE M0E2TENG' 0KEG0NIA2?, THTJESDAY, MARCH 2, 1905. .fiLUMNAE TO ACT goitland'ColIege Women Have v ' Organized Branch. JET; OF OFFICERS ELECTED JWHI Entertain Members From Other - States Who May Visit This '.v.City During the Lewis and ; 'Clark Exposition. , College women in Portland are much '.interested In the organization ot the Ore gon branch of the Association of Col y&lzXa Alumnae, which has just been ;recte with Mrs. K. L. Donald as :resi(lent, ilrs. George Haskell Marsh tn1 Miss jLaura H. Xorthup as first and second vice-presidents, Mrs. J. C. Elliott 'King as secretary, and Miss Mabel A 'Haseltine as treasurer. They are plan ning to secure a centrally located club room for their meetings where they can also provide pleasant entertainment for members of the association who may visit the city during the Lewis and Clark Exposition. A luncheon will be given by the so 2dety Saturday. March 4, at 1 o'clock at She Hotel Portland, to which all women eligible to membership are invited. As Ijar as possible these have already been Staked to bo present, but the president rbe glad if anyone with whom she not acquainted will make herself : known to any of the officers before Sat urday. History of Association. The association was organized in 1ES2 'Und Incorporated upder a special act tef the Massachusetts Legislature in 1S99, jtor the purpose of uniting the alumnae Xt different institutions for practical ed ucation, for the collection and publi cation of statistical and other educational fdata. and In general for the maintenance of high standards of education. St "Louis was the place of the last annual meeting and the next will be held at ."Atlanta, Georgia, by invitation of the Southern Association of College Women, Jprobably at the Thanksgiving recess. The membership in October. ISM. was $050, a small number, comparatively, since more than 20,000 are eligible. . Those who become members in other states have demonstrated that there is much valuable work that the association -can do, for instance, as Alice Upton wPearmain says in the January number al the Association of Collegiate Alumnae: "A committee of the California branch, working, conjointly with the State Ed ucational Commission was brought about two much needed changes in the school- -Jooard of the state, the first of which TjoTiDjrs high schools under the support of the fetfete, -.vhile the second places the certification of high-school teachers in the hands of the State Board of Educa tion. The Connecticut committee on con ference with the federated clubs was Instrumental in the passage of a. legis lative act providing for trained super vision of rural schools, with better .sal aries for the teachers of such schools; It 13 still at work on an attempt to do away, -with the district school system. The Michigan committee on conference, after devoting its attention to the san itary and hygienic conditions and over crowding of public schools, reports notice able additions in buildings of an Improved jtype. In, many places old buildings have been enlarged in -ways which have made rthe proportion of seats to children more nearly adequate. The committee has filBO secured the introduction of manual training in both public and private schools, and In the former an Increased number of good teachers of sewing and cooking and knife work." Any woman "who has received a de gree In arts, philosophy, science or liter ature from any college, university or sclentlno school admitted to the asso ciation Is entitled to membership. Colleges Admitted. Following is the list of colleges ad mitted to the association (it will be no ticed that none of the Northwestern iuilversitles have yet been received): Co-educational The state universities ot California, Illinois, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, "Wisconsin, Boston University. PE0M CHTTRCH TO TEE RAIL "Minister Steps From Pulpit to Be come Railway Brakeman. Rev. C. M. Smythe. who has been pastor for the 2kIisslsslppl-A.ven.ue Congregational Church tor the year ending March 1, ISOo, yesterday closed his pastoral relations. and -within a short time will become i "fcrakeman on the O. R. & X. Railway "When Mr. Smythe was called to this church he was a clerk in the railroad office In Portland, and -went back to the Smlpit with some reluctance, as he liked the work In which he was engaged. Edu cated ae a minister, first in a literary school and then in & theological college. end working bis way up through his own efforts, ilr. Smythe now takes one of the lower places in the railroad world. How ever, he insists that he has not left the pulpit permanently, and still remains member of the Portland Congregational Association, and if a call comes to him to become pastor of a church he would consider It. Also he expects to preach .when opportunity offers. X'c is & peculiar coincidence that Mr. Smythe succeeded a man who resigned to study human nature as a street-car con ductor. The congregation will now en deavor to secure a minister who has no railroad predilections, and will hang out a ign, "ro railroad men need apply." JSUSENESS "rrxirff.
