MARKET MORE SETTLED
RESUMPTION OF STRENGTH IN
ENTIRE STOCK LIST. -
Fewer Reasons to Fear Corner In
Southern Iron Shares New York
Central the Leading Feature.
NEW YORK. Feb. 24. The stock market
was more settled today- and there was a re
sumption of strength. This was largely due
to a ' decrcaae In tho fears of a disastrous
outcome to the struggle for control of the
Southern iron companies. There were fewer
reasons to fear a corner in those stocks and
their movements wero less excited than thcc
of yesterday. The group was regarded with
more or less suspicion and distrust, however,
and the public at large was much at a loss
to form accurate conclusions as to the proba
ble final outcome of the whole affair. Ac
tivity reverted very largely to the railroad
list and high grade stocks which helped to
reassure fcontlment disturbed by yesterday's
tcnsatlonal fluctuations.
New Tork Central was a leading feature
and Its advance of over ceven points was
made on much larger transactions than are
usual In that stock. The principal operations
were attributed to the same sources as the
recent campaign in Ontario & Western. This
led to a revival of a, former rumor that the
recently acquired control by "llie New York.
New Haven & Hartford of Ontario & West
ern was to be transferred to or shared by
New York Central.
The movement In other Eastern railroad
stocks was largely sympathetic Union Pa
cific recovered vigorously from Its sharp break
of late yesterday to a record price at 136.
and this was another sympathetic Influence
of wide effect in the market. Illinois Central
was tho leader in the Southern group. The
buying of the stock had no other explanation
than general considerations of its relative
prive level. Amalgamated Copper seemed to
be helped by the extra dividend declared yes
terday on the stock of an Important Inde
pendent copper company. The Wabash sys
tem reported net earnings for January, "which
showed a falling off of considerable over 50
per cent from those of January for the pre
ceding year, but Its preferred stock was not
debarred from a share in the day's strength.
The Gould group was helped by the very
largo over-subscription for the $25,000,000. of
Missouri Pacific bonds which were offered to
day. The subscriptions received were reported
by the bankers to be over eight times Ida
amount of the bonds. The upward movement
tDread rapidly toward tho last and gained
greatly in animation with the late outburst
in New York Central and Union Pacific, which
carried prices with them to a firm close.

BULGE IN CORN PRICES
HAS. LIFTING TENDENCY IN CHI
CAGO WHEAT MARKET.
Closing Is Firm, Though Opening Is
Weak on Lower .Cables and
Heavy Argentine Shipments.
CHICAGO. Feb. 21. An active demand from
several prominent bulls and good buying by
cash bouses started the. sharp advance In the
price of corn. Alarmed at the appearance of
an urgent demand shorts endeavored to cover,
but offerings being extremely small, the efforti
-served only to force prices still higher. Large
clearances at the - seaboard, was the factor
which received most attention. Owing to
lower cables, the market opened easier. May
being a shade to 3Uc lower at 4644Gc
Almost Immediately, however, heavy pur
chases by a leader of the bulls precipitated
an active inquiry from snorts. Prices rose
steadily until May had reached 48c. The
market clotad practically at the highest point,
final quotations on May being at 47c
Influenced by lower prices at Liverpool
wheat opened easier. May was unchanged to
c higher at $1.18 to $i.U&. and July was
unchanged to c lower at $1.01?ii to $1.01.
The weakness at Liverpool was -attributed to
enormous shipments from Argentina, exports
from that country being 4.360.000 buBhel.
compared with 3,968,000 bushels In the corre
upondlng, week a year ago. Tit traders sold
qulto freely at the outset, forcing May down
to $1.18. On the dip. commission houses
bccaine active buyers, causing a quick rally.
During the last half hour the volume ot trad
ing was very light, interest ot traders being
diverted temporarily to tbo corn pit. Tho
strength of tho yellow cereal was the main
cautse of the late firmness in other grain?.
At $1.18 May reached the highest point of
the day and the closing quotation was at the
top. July sold up to $1.02. clceing at a gain
of esc at $1.01Ti1.02.
Sentiment In the oats pit was bullish, large
ly in sympathy with- the strength not corn.
JJay opened unchanged to c lower at 30i
30c and closed at 31&31ic.
Provisions Hbowed considerable strength In
the face of the weakness of other products.
At tlw close May porkwas off 2c, lard 2$p

VALE. Or.. Feb. 21. (To the Editor.) Will
you kindly give your opinion on the following
question In dilute: A claims that the pur
chase of Alaska by the United States was not
a bona fide transafftion, but that the prlee
paid to Russia by our Government was in
reality to pay Russia for sending her fleet to
our Atlantic coast during the Civil War to
prevent the British and French fleets from
opening the Southern porta blockaded by the
Federal Government. A further asserts that
Russia had, previous to that time, offered
Alaska to tho United State as a free gift, n
denies both of these aotwrtlons. Which Is
