10 THE MORNING (XREGOlSIAff, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1905. VICE IS CHECKED It Flaunts No Challenge to Morality Now, SHERIFF WORD'S STATEMENT Paris House Not a Sunday-School, but Its Condition Better Than Ever Before, the Offi cial Declares. "The Paris House Is not running as it was before. Moreover, It never will. Police Captain Bailey, who said it was, never visited the house, but one of his sergeants told him it was running the same as before the raid. If it had been running as he says, it was his duty as on officer to close It Immediately. I would have done so had I been in his position. The Paris House is in a better and a more moral condition than it ever was. I had a committee of eight busi ness men go through it and they declared there were greater restrictions on the house than ever before. There Is no bar there now and no boys running through the halls. When I raided it I could have brought to Jail a dozen boys between the ages of 16 and IS years. Never as Before. "The Paris House will never be" op erated again as it once was. If I have to raid It again it will never be opened even as a lodging-house, and will have to run strictly as a hotel. I do not deny that it is operated the same as other rooming-houses In that locality, but the systematic reign of vice is not there, and If there is any vice it is well under cover. There is no standing invitation, no open challenge to morality, as there was before. I never expected to make a Sunday school out of the Paris House: it is in the wrong part of town. But I intended to make conditions a little bet ter, and this I have done." The foregoing was the statement of Sheriff "Word made yesterday relative to the statement of Police Captain Bailey that conditions in the Paris House and little Paris House were the same as be fnra. b sheriff's raid. Sheriff Word states his position emphatically, says that he knows vice is not wnony ODiucratea, but that there is no open challenge to mnralltv as there was before. The Paris House cannot be made a respectable place, according to the Sheriff, as long as its surroundings are as they now are, but the changes ordered by the Sheriff have caused a step for tne Better. Will Visit Other Resorts. There are several other resorts in the North End upon which Sheriff Word has an eye, and he has stated that as soon as he possibly can they will receive atten tion For the nast week Sheriff Word has been engrossed with other duties, his deputies have been busy, and there has been neither time nor men for raids. The Sheriff promises, however, that there will be certain occurrences in the near future. "When T am nreDarcd to tret ready." he KBiA vesterdav. "I will chance the man of the North End within 24 hours. When I begin I will not stop until the work is done, and when I have finished the .North End will resemble a cyclone-swept Kan bsr nrnJrle." Sheriff Word has also stated that he .looks for no help from the Police De ' mnrtmpnt. "Whatever Is accomplished I must ac complish alone, with tne aid or my dep uties." he said. "I have been continually hampered by interviews given out by nnllr.ft officers, who have often asserted that my raids have been in vain, and that I was showing favoritism. However, this does not bother me. I am going to do my duty. The Paris House or any other im moral resort I shall close will never re turn to its old condition so long as I am tjnerirr. or juuunoman county. WILL IS ATTACKED. Green C. Love Seeks to Break Codicil. Green C Xove appeared In the County Court yesterday seeking to have a codicil in the will of his rather, tho late Lewis Love, so construed that he will have ab solute control over one-sixth of the es tate valued at $100,000, instead of only a life estate. If Green C. Love dies with out issue of his body, unless his two grandchildren be so declared, his share of the estate goes in equal parts to the other lawful heirs. The codicil of the will specifically strates that the legacy to Green C. Love shall be for his sole and separate use and independent of his wife at all times, and in case of his death without lawful issue living at the time of his death, then the legacy shall go to the remaining devisees under the will proportionately to the In terest already devoted to them. Green C Love is E5 years old and is now living with his third wife. His first wife died, and he was divorced from wife number 2. Only his first wife bore him children and they are dead. In his petition contesting the will Green C. Love avers that his father. Captain Love, was influenced and persuaded to add the codicil to the 'will by his daugh ter. Mary C. Stafford, and that Captain Love, because of his advanced age. S3 years, was easily influenced. In support of the will Dr. Dav Raffety. Dr. O. P. S. Plummer, D. J. Buckley and others test! fled that Lewis Love retained his mental faculties to the last, and was not a per son who could be readily Influenced. It Is stated that Captain Love did not like J.he present wife of Green C. Love, and there is another story afloat that the trouble was all occasioned by a quarrel between Mrs. Green C. Love and Nannie Stafford, a daughter of Mary C. Stafford The hearing will be resumed today. File Incorporation Articles. Articles of incorporation of the Wild man-Raphael Company were filed in the County Clerk's office yesterday by A. Wildman. S. Raphael and D. Soils Cohen; capital stock, 520,000.
