10 THE MOSSING OBEGOSIAff, TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 21, 1905. DAVIS FOR UMPIRE ExCaptain of Grim's Team Signed by Bert. ONE OF LUCAS' BEST MEN New Official Had High Standing in Pacific National League Mc Credie 'May Buy St. Louis Catcher. J. Ira (Slats) Davis, -who was at ono time captain of Jack Grim's Pacific 2Ca tional League team, while it flourished on the East Side, yesterday accepted President Bert's offer to become an um pire In the Pacific Coast League. Davis is one of the best-known ball players on the Coast. He umpired a few games last season on the local field and gave perfect satisfaction. At that time he applied to President Bert for a position on his umpire staff, but at the time there was no vacancy. Davis is nothing if- not persistent, and from time to time he has reminded President Bert that he was ready to talk umpire business. The terms that President Bert offered Davis were satisfactory, and he at once telegraphed his acceptance. "Slats" Davis, as he is called by both players and fans, has been playing ball for the past ten years. While he was with Grlm'g team, Davis was captain and played first base. As a player he was full of ginger and he kept his men on their toes all the time. He played first base for Ike Butler during the last series of last season's games at home, but he was not taken south with the team. In stead of loafing around all winter Davis nt once went to work for a local clothing firm. He was there "but a few weeks before he was made manager, a position that He has held all "Winter. Davis will continue as manager of this store until February 25. He will then go to San Francisco and stay there until it is time to say "play ball." From Portland Davis took Grim's team to Salt Lake. Ho had troublesome times among the Mormons, but he stuck out the season. Last year he wag on Presi dent Lucas' staff of umpires and Mr. Lucas considered him the best umpire in his league. Davis, being full of ginger himself, instils It Into the opposing teams. Where he umpires there is no four-flushing. He knows every trick of the game and will stand for no foolishness from the players. One thing is sure, if Davis Is backed up by President Bert, and there Is every reason to believe that he will be, the Pacific Coast League fans have seen the last of umpire baiting. He Is not afraid to take a player's money from him, nor to chase a rough-house player off the diamond. On the diamond Davis has no friends among the players. Bofore the game starts he Informs the captains that they are to do the talking and that If any other member of the team leaves his position and begins a gab-fest, the player will be fined and put out of the game. Davis is bound to travel a rough road at first but once manager and players know that he means business they will let him run the game. It Is understood that Manager Mc Credie has decided to buy Catcher Swin dells, of St- Louis. If he does, this will give the Webfooters two backstops of major league reputation and a couple of corking good "ballplayers. Another bit of choice gossip that was going the rounds of the fans was the story that Manager McCredle had two first-basemen on his string. Both are owned by George Tebeau and their names are Hart and Morris White. White has played on the Denver team. Last year he batted .330 per cent and had a high fielding average. DOUBT ABOUT A TRACK TEAM 0 University of Oregon Athletes Find Studies Are Very Heavy. UNIVERSITY OF OREGON, Eugene. Feb. 20. Special.) Shall Oregon have a track team this season?, is the burning question on the campus. Many Influences make the advisability of a team doubtful The faculty Is demanding unusually high scholarship of the 'varsity athletes this year. The student-body funds are lnado quate to care for the large squad of men that will report for practice, making it almost possible to engage an efficient coach, give the candidates good attention fcnd not close the season with an Increased deficit. Tliere is an abundance of good ma terial in college, though, and the men are Interested, as Is shown by the work In the gymnasium- The athletes will de termine for themselves at a meeting to be called by Captain Hug some Jlme this week whether Spring athletics will be carried on. Whatever the track men de cide upon will be final, and If they choose to organize a team they will be given hearty support. Captain Hug said: "Prospects for a strong team are ex ceedingly good. With Moo res and Kuy kendall as possible sprinters: with Hen derson In the jumps and hurdles, and with Perkins In the quarter and half-mile runs we have some sure point-winners. There is also some good material in the weight events. The only event in which we would be weak Is the pole-vault. t'As far as the strength of the team Is concerned It may be mado stronger than the squad was last year, but to me the discouraging feature is the schedule. Pa cific University and the Oregon Agricul tural College are the only two meets that are a certainty, and as a majority of the candidates have heavy courses in col lege It seems impracticable to urge such a necessary sacrifice of scholarship lor but two contests. Should Manager Whit tlesey arrange other meets. Including Washington and possibly the champions of Eastern Washington and Idaho, it would give sufficient interest to warrant the organization of a team." If Trainer Hay ward is sent for and a team Is perfected as conditions exist now, it will be done simply for the purpose of developing material for next year." READY FOR THE SECOND RUN Hunt Club Preparing for Washing ton's Birthday Event. Members of the Portland Hunt Club are making great preparations for the second run for the Miss Anne Shogren cup, which will be held on Washington's birthday, Wednesday afternoon. The start will be from the Seven Corners on the Section Line road, at 2:20. The hares have selected the course and have arranged the jumps. The footing over the entire course is perfect and all of the jumps nicely planned. The point selected for the finish will not be made known until just before the start, but the hares have assured the riders that they have chosen a stretch that will be long enough to give the leaders a chance to show what they can do In the finish ing line.
