N. Fleleehner. J. P. Flnley. Though Portland's city election is three land one-half months distant, clans are getting together for selection of condidates. The office frought with heav iest Importance Is that of Mayor, for which many notables and celebrities are carried, on the tongue of political and reform patriots. Some of the aforesaid notables and celebrities are openly desirous of devot ing their energies to the welfare of their fellow mortals, others wish to be coaxed, and sth! others will not enter the sac rifice unless pulled Into it. Of first concern is the question whether reform elements will put up can didates of their own or will fall into line behind the banners of the regular par ties. But reformers themselves have not decided this question and, as a prominent member of the Municipal "League said last night, they will not do so until they behold the character and purpose of the partj- nominees. Officers to be elected besides Mayor are Auditor, Treasurer, Municipal Judge, City Attorney and 15 Councilmen. As the Mayor is vested with large powers for enforcement of law and administration of departments and as his authority consti tutes a virtual "one-man government," reform forces are very eager to elect to the office somebody who will pledge him self to suppress gambling and hold sa loons and other Instruments of vice under rigid survellance, and who has energy to make- good his pledge and hold to it until the end of his term in July, 1907. Political parties on their side are wait ing to see what reformers will do, and thus each is looking for the other to take the initiative. The Republican or ganization of the city does not feel Itself in very good shape, just now, owing to the policy pursued by Mayor "Williams for the licensing of gambling, the scandal unearthed in the City Engineer's depart ment, and the Indictment of machine leaders for land frauds; consequently some influenclal counselors of the or ganization have been advising that the machine lend its influence to the nomina tion of a citizens' Jticket and thus ride to clory in a non-partisan bandwagon. Will Play for Reform Vote. That Republicans and Democrats will fendeavor to nominate a ticket -which will draw the support of the reform elements seems likely. Those elements have al ready organized a movement for the nomination of candidates pledged to law enforcement. "The man that -we shall support for Mayor," said a prominent reformer last tnlght, "must be not alone good and hon est, not alone a man of integrity, but a, man -who will enforce the law. It will aiot be enough for him to be of un iblemished character. We don't want an other Judge "Williams. We have a good negative man now. Next time we want a positive man. We prefer him to be prom inent in business affairs. We do not tuk that he be radical or a Sunday school leader if he will promise to suppress vice." Surveying for Candidates. Leaders of reform organizations have been surveying the field for candidates tor some time and now that the Legisla ture is out of the way and the local op tion law Is safe, have renewed their quest. Among tho eligibles whose names adorn their roster are R. Livingstone, but who' is reluctant to become the can didate because of his desire to travel abroad this Spring; H. W. Goode, presi dent of the Lewis and Clark Fair; A. L. Mills, speaker of the House of Rep resentatives, president of the charter Ijoard, who has taken a prominent part in affairs of the city government in time past; Tom Word, Sheriff and foe to gambling joints; W. P. Olds, of the firm of Olds, Wortman & King; Samuel Con nell, a sash and door manufacturer and a prominent member of the anti-saloon league, and W. M. Ladd, of the banking firm of Ladd & Tllton. Others who are spoken of in reform eounsels appear In the foregoing list of eligibles. Law and order force's desire the Re publican and the Democratic organiza tions to select timber from the class represented by those mentioned above as their candidates, and should that be done they say they will not put citizen candi dates into the field. Such is tho attitude of the Municipal League and the anti-saloon league Dr. J. R. Wilson, president of the latter organization In Oregon, said yesterday. that the policy of the league is to engage in anti-saloon politics but not in party politics, and to select from party tickets such candidates as will uphold its prin ciples. The rule of the league, he said, was not to put candidates into the field but to secure the nomination and elec tion of anti-saloon condidates. W. B. Ayer Is a favorite of tho Re publican organization but has said he does not desire to sit in the Mayor's seat and would not accept the nomina tion. Mr. Ayer, as president of the East ern & Western Lumber Company, has been a foo to labor unions and they re card him as being one of the chief leaders of their defeat in the strikes of a vcar a half ago. thereupon ho would be a target for revenge. Another man who finds grace in the eyes of the Re publican organization is L. R. TV coster. County Judge, who is oftentimes spoken of as a possible nominee for Governor next year. In the Democratic camp, Dr. Harry Lane sits on a high pedestal among the eligibles; also Tom "Word and J. 2s TeaL A. F. Flegel is being: groomed for the race by an clement of devoted Demo cratic patriots, and another possibility dwells in the person of V. B. Glafke, a commission merchant of Front street. Other great artists appearing on the bill will be the Four Graceful Grohs, contortionists and balancers; DeNoyer and Ward, the laughter-makers; Patronella DeArville, the celebrated violin virtuoso, and many others. New Bill at the Star. A vaudeville bill of extraordinary merit begins today at the Star Theater when the new programme Is started with such an excellent headllner as Miller, the great rope king. His feats vary from difficult lassoing to twisting his lariat in a hoop like maze. The Three Voltens are equilib rists and acrobats who disguise their strength by appearing In evening garb. Beaty and Price are comedy sketch ar tists who possess originality and a price less one-act farce. Hawley and Vass ap pear In a merry skit, "The Jew and the Groom." Silvano is an entertainer billed as a musical shadowgrapher, whose spe cialty is making his facile fingers form fantastic figures. Arthur Jackson will sing pictured ballads, while the record breaking bill will close with imported films on the projectoscope. "Beyond the Rockies" Opens Today. The Lyric Stock Company will open an other great week today in the thrilling Western melodrama of Colorado minlng camp Iua "Beyond the Rockies."
