Today's stcok market was distinctly ono of specialties, and but few stocks "of the first rank will be found in the llrt of those fluctuating as much as a point. The market was decidedly duller than has bVea the case recently, especially among the stand ard stocks. The minor railroads which were active have a much smaller volume f cap italization than' the great standard stocks, and the congested Interest In this class has ita ef fect In bringing down the total of tho day's transactions. There was a marked falling' off in operations by some of. the recently active pool?. The tone was hesitating and Irregular. Some of the special advances were due to rumors affecting the Individual properties. con cerned, these In a number of coses pointing to intended dividend declarations on stocks which now receive no disbursement. In some of the low-priced industrials there were feerlh up ward spurn from this cause. There were traces of. last week's movement in the Iron and steel group, but the movement showed signs of culmlnztlon. and the United States Steel stocks especially were sluggish a"hd Indifferent. The weekly collection of views of traffic offl ciala was tinged by the existence of obstacles to traffic from the stormy weather. Although the general tanc as to tbo volume ot the mer chandise movement continued cheerful. Week ly gross earnings Tor the first week of Feb ruary showed ths effect of atorm and of .the grain rate war. The continuance of tbvM fac tors promised a similar resuft for the forth coming statements for the second week. Time money was firmer, but largely Bomlnal. owing to the scant activity. The drooping tendency of foreign exchange and the relaxa tion at all points of the pressure for our gold was considered of greater Importance. The reduction in the official discount rate of the Imperial Bank of German) was accepted a an .index of relaxing money conditions in all the foreign markets. Rumors' of peace were also an effcotlve Influenco lu foreign markets which was reflected here. This was & notable factor sustaining the early market. Union Pacific was heavily bought In the late dealing?, and rose to the high level of lite year. The strength of Union Pacific wsa unexplained, ex cept it was'hought heavily .abroad. The close wa steady. There was & broad demand for bonds of other than the first grades, and a. Arm tone to the market. Total sales, par value, $4,410,000. Jackson, Jr., Self-Nominated Candidate for President. XEV YORK, Feb. 14. Tha flrst attempt of an unwelcome visitor to call upon President Roosevelt since, his arrival In. Mass., called at tho home of Douglas Robinson, where the President stopped for the night, and asked to have his card sent to Ue Presi dent. The secret service men and police men on guard about the entrance informed the man that the President had not yet arisen, and asked him to call again. Ho was not arrested, but went to a hotel, saying ho would return again. In answer to questions as to his identity and why he wanted lo see tho President, Jackson said he wished to confer with the President as to reforms In Govern ment, and that he was a eelf-nomlnated candidate for the Presidency in 1SS6, 1M0 and 3304. He declared that he was the proprietor of the Hotel Hamilton In Low ell. Ills movements are being; watched by the police. Jackson seemed perfectly willing lo talk about himself and his plans. "I wish to speak with President Roose velt." he said, "with a view to imparting to him some valuable Information as to how the office he holds should be con ducted. I came early, so as not to take up the President's time, for I know he is very busy. "Senator Mark Hanna. before he died, said he believed I was a menace to the Government, as I was able to get control of the Cliief Magistrate, and overthrow hl3 style of running things." Jackson, who is an old man, returned to the Robinson home a second time in about an hour. He went to a basement door and addressed a detective wh was sta tioned Inside the twisted Iron door. "Are you the President?" he asked. "Yes, sir. Good morning to you." re plied the detective. "Well, do you know, I am "William "Wal dorf Jackson, Jr., and I am very anxious to speak with you." After telling the old man that he was very busy and that he would prefer to have him call tomorrow, or the day follow ing, the detective then bade his visitor "good day," and turned inclde the door. Light Receipts and Improved Cash Demand Also Bullish Factors , at Chicago. CHICAGO. Feb! 14. From the start ths wheat market here bad a strong undertone, notwithstanding a liberal Increase la world's shipments, and in the amount- of wheat oa pasiage. Tho opening quotations were at mod erate advancer. May being up Vic to c. July opened a shade lower to a shade higher. A number of Influences combined to off.t the effect of the bearish factors. Among the bull influences were Arm cables, light receipts and an Improved demand for cash wheat and for flour. Buying In tho wheat pit here was chtcfly by shorts. There was socie filing credited to a bull, but compared to the brisk demand that developed at times, the offerings were- light. May was in especially good demand, alleged fear of pos sible manipulation by Wall street Interests causing shorts to cover freely, and within the first half hour May rose to $1.1S.
