10 THE MORNING O&EGONIAar, FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, ,1905. FORGER IN THE TOILS R. H. Baldwin Under Arrest in Los Angeles. WANTED BY PORTLAND POLICE Sook Agent Charged With Forging Names of Portland People to Or ders Is to Be Tried for Similar Offense. IX5S ANGELES, Cal., Feb. 2. (Special.") R. H. Baldwin, the alleged book-agent swindler, "was rearralgned In Justice Chambers Court today on a charge of forgery. His trial was set for February 8. Baldwin Is charged with having forged the name of MIIo Potter, proprietor of the Hotel Potter, Santa Barbara and Van JJuys, Los Angeles, to an order for $256 worth .of books. The order was turned In to Scribner & Sons' office In this city end a cash commission of $39 was paid Baldwin. The man was arrested two weeks .ago by local detectives. He is in jail in default of 51500 ball. Potter de nies all knowledge, of the order. The arrest of R. H. Baldwin at Los Angeles brought gladness to the heart of Superintendent J. P. Lockwood, of Scribner's local agency, whom Baldwin fleeced of 5143 last December. A warrant for his arrest was issued hero shortly after he had disappeared. Baldwin came here from Seattle in No vember, where he had been in the em ploy of a large book ebneern and from whom, it is said, he secured considerable money upon forged orders. Ho entered the employ of Lockwood and within a lew days turned in what purported to be an order for 5513 for books from a lady of this city; also one amounting to 5293 from another. Commission was paid Baldwin on these orders, and he Imme diately left tor parts unknown. Later developments show that the larger order was obtained under false pretenses and the other was a forgery. Just before, entering the employ of Scribner's local agency, Baldwin visited Superintendent of Schools Rigler and en deavored to secure an order, but failed. Nothing daunted, the versatile book agent signed the superintendent's name to the contract and tried to collect the commlsr sion from Dodd, Mead & Co., of Seattle, hut was unsuccessful. Baldwin while here said he had a brother in business at 86 Fourth street, but his namesake denied the relationship, although admitting he was under such obligations to the salesman that he cashed an unauthorized draft for $360 without making any attempt to recover the money or punish his supposed relative. TO HAVE COUNTY PAIR. . Elks Plan Benefit to Occur in the Near Future. Plans are now under way to hold a county fair at the Armory, Tenth and Couch streets, under the direction of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, Portland Lodge No. 142, and the proceeds will be used to furnish the new Elks' building now being erected at Seventh and Stark streets. The Elks never do anything by halves and the coming county fair will undoubtedly be a great success. The Elks have successfully managed two street carnivals which made money and spread no end of amusement. But there Is now an Elks' law in force forbidding any more street carnivals or other open-air attractions, within the order, and this is the reason that the Elks' form of entertainment this year -will take the form of an Indoor attraction. Portland Lodge No. 142 has now about 1000 members, and postcards are now being sent out to those Elks asking them to furnish the names of women friends who would be Interested enough in the order to manage and otherwise assist In the 23 or SO booths which will be main attractions at the county fair. When the names of the Elks' women friends are received, which will be within two or three days, invitations will be sent ask ing them for the pleasure of their com pany to a social and concert, which will be given simultaneously in the Elks hall and Knights of Pythias hall, Marquam building, Tuesday evening, February 10. On this occasion a high-class musical programme will be given by Mrs. May Dearborne Schwab, soprano; Mrs. Max M. Shlllock, contralto, Dom J. Zan, bari tone; Miss Cornelia R. Barker, vlolln iste, and others. Lunch will also be servede, and plans -will be discussed as to the co-operation of the women guests and their friends, at the county fair. The booths for the sale of goods at the Fair will be located on the ground floor of the Armory, and concerts and entertainments will be given in the up stairs hall. Among the articles to be disposed of are a piano and pianola, do nated by a leading music firm of this city. Carl H. Jackson, proprietor of the North Pacific Planing Mill, has donated a new altar for the new Elks building. The names of the general committee of the county fair are: John F. Cordray, chairman; J. Harvey O'Bryan, E. TV. Howe, George H. Carr and William M. Davis. They are all well known and hard workers. G. A. E.
