12 THE MORNING OREG ONI AN, .THURSDAY. FEBRUARY. 2, " 190o. The Man With the Gun And Other Facts and Fancies of the Municipal Court. IT "WAS midnight. The clock was strik ing the hour, "but there -was no one on tho bridge. Across the river the twink ling of myriads of lights told of a great city. Above it loomed the mountains in silhouette. Their uppermost crest was crowned with a great gold "1905," upon a field of azure. Oblivious to all this in spiring grandeur, Mr. Hastings slumbered, a monotonous "z-z-z-z-z" escaping from his nasal appendage. At ten minutes past the hour, Ben Ba ker, pleasure-bound, meandered over the bridge. It was the Burnslde-street bridge. Ben, who is long and lanky and sports a crop of spinach and filaments that would make mon chere Ignace Ian P. look like 30 cents, was several sheets to the wind. He Journeyed to a delightful little house boat moored to the Burnslde-street bridge and awakened Mr. Hastings from his rev eries, at least go says Mr. Hastings. "Good brother Hastings," quoth Ben, "'the canine howls most ungodly. Prithee, wilt hand me thy good musket while I drive the creature to regions of eternal warmth?" "Nay, friend, spare the dog," pleaded Mr. Hastings. "Aye. 'tis better so. Pray give me thy gun and I wilt destroy myself." "I didn't want to give it to him, your honor." said Mr. Hastings, "but he would have It. He went outside and fired 'er off and I went out in my shirt tails and skl daddled to the neighbor's." "Ha, ha, a diabolical plot!" muttered his honor. "Baker, truly thou hast some remembrance of this most extraordinary occurrence." "Gadzooks, no. Methlnks yon plebeian doth telleth a direful He." "But you might have been drunk, you know," suggested his honor, coming back to earth. "No, good sir; thou doest me wrong." "Methlnks that the two of your are most cheerful ones. Findest thou some one who heardest that shot or who didn'st and comest thou here Friday. Foreooth, I wouldst findest who HesL" This one Is Mr. Bell. He is a real nice man. Yes, really. But what do you think? He plays cards. Yes, he plays thorn standing up against the wall. The same way a man eats hie lunchafter he has seated himself upon a pin. He was up before our good friend Judge Hogue yesterday. It seems that he went into a room in the Winchester House to watch' some reai naughty boys playing poker. Awful, wasn't it? The Judge seemed to think so. Mr. Bell proved quite an alibi, and he had an attorney, too. "Seeing that there is no conclusive ei dence against Mr. Bell, why, erh there seems to be quite a difference between Mr. Bell and his friends socially, and erh well, he appeals to me as being in bet ter position to pay fines. Twenty-five sl moleons, please." Mr. Bell felt real hurt. Underground Fighting. Japanese Officer In Leslie's Monthly. Where we were digging In an "Jiv derground tunnel toward the Russian fortification, we noticed a caving of earth. Every one of us had a rope tied to his leg. We hud the distinction of belonging to the kesshttai (now the kesshitai means a band of men who have left all hopes of life behind). We had said to our friends whom we had left behind to pull us out by the ropes, if possible, in case Heaven would not give us the last grace of carrjng our selves out. The tunnel had to be dug in all haste. There were a band of our comrades who were clinging to the shell holes on the slopes .In front of the hostile forts, and unless we could suc ceed in blowing up these caponieres and machine guns it was impossible to save them. All of a sudden there was an ex plosion; earth shook, then shuddered. All was blackness. Six of us were burled. We were dug out by our com rades by the ropes which were about our feet. At the end. of three of the ropes, however, they found but little save a touch of heroic memory burned black and grim by the powder. Our tunneling work was completely wrecked. Where the explosion took place there was a hole of over 10 meters In diameter. But It Is an un kindly kick of luck Indeed which has no silken tassel at the point of its slip pers. Looking down through the open ing made by the explosion, we found jutting out from the dark earth some thing -white. Large Families. Lancet. The physical and moral advantages of largo families are well recognized. Mem bers of small families, like only children, are poorly equipped for the struggle of life, and the avoidance of obligations and responsibiltles on the part of the parents does away with a very powerful factor In tho education of the individual.
