TO STOCK TRADING.
Most ..Noticeable Advances Are In
Minor Industrials Activity Di
A mini&hes Toward Close.
NEW YORK, Jan. 27. Tle upward course of
prices la the stock market which set In yes
terday continued this morning, and the market
for a time showed strength and breadth. Con
siderable buying for London account helped
to this end. The force of the demand seemed
to be spent toward the latter part oT the day.
and there was a sotaoje falling oil of the vol
ume of dealings and some reactions In prices.
The feature of the latter part of the day was
the large number of Industrials of all classes
which were pushed up succeuitely. The- minor
iron and steel stocks and those or trades allied
with the metal industries were especially con
spicuous In the movement. Equally conspic
uous was the fact.xhat the United States Steel
stocks and Amalgamated Copper were heavy
and backward In the movement. The same
was true of the electrics and Smelting. This
led to the inference that profits were being
sought oa the recent advance in the, major in
dustrials . under cover of the movement la the
minor Industrials.
The advance of Northern Securities on the
curb to a new high record stimulated the
strength la the Harrlmaa stocks and Erie
kept up Its accompanying movement, as for
some time past. Reading's strong statement
of December net earnings was a helpful factor
for the coalers. Railroad earnings, otherwise.
were helpful to stocks.
Uncertainty over tomorrow's bank statement
added to the hesitation of the late market. It
is considered probable that last week's record
expansion of loans- may have a counterpart in
this week's statement. The compilation of tne
reports of condition of the trust companies De
cember 31 seems to throw light on the move
ment of bank loans. Compared with June 30
preceding, the trust companies have Increased
their deposits over $125,000,000, while tne
cash to their account In banks has been re
duced $53,674,404. The trust company loans
for the same period were increased $231,476.
762. With the profitable money rate for the
last of the year, it Is clear that the trust
comDanles were lending out their own deposits.
Instead of leaving them in tho banks. With
the decline in money rates since the first or
the year, it is equally clear that the trust
companies have made enormous redeposlts In
the banks, which have had the responsibility
of Hading use for the funds, upon which they
must nay the trust companies 2 per cent. The
condition of the week's money roarxei maaes
probable a further enormous taking over of
loans by the banks from the trust compamea.
The late break In sympathy with Amal
gamated Cooper was partly retrieved. Erie
leading the rally again, as in the previous up
ward tendency. The closing was arm.
Rnnda were Arm. Total sales, S.i-,-
United States 3s declined 5i per cent on call.

WHEAT PIT WEAK.
Increased Shipments From Argentina Cause
Easier Tone.
CHICAGO. Jan. 27. With the exception of a
short period of strength near the middle of the
session, sentiment in the wheat pit was quite
bearish. - Influenced by lower prices at Liver
pool, following Increased shipments from Ar
gentina. Initial quotations showed declines.
May being off c to c at $1.16ei.l&- A
factor that contributed to weakness was the
more liberal movement in the" Northwest, re
ceipts today being 13 cars greater than were
received the corresponding day a year age
Later a firmer tone developed on news from
the Northwest and Southwest. St. Louis re
ported good sales of wheat for shipment to
Southeastern millers. Advices from Minneap
olis told of Increased sales of flour and of
higher prices paid by the millers. Reports
from Portland, Or., claimed that the market
there was in line with export bids, and that
some business had already been done In that
direction. A sale of 100.000 barrels of flour
for Japan was among the Pacific Coast Items.
The market readily responded to the improve
ment. May advancing to $1.16. The strength
was only temporary, however, the market soon
becoming weak on general profit-taking. The
market closed weak, with May at $L15.
Predictions that through rates in grain from
Missouri River points would greatly increase
arrivals here had a weakening effect on the
com market. May opened c to c lower at
45Ji5c and doted at 45c.
A heavy undertone with a downward tend
ency of prices existed in the oats pit. May
closed practically unchanged at 31c
A 10c decline in hog prices, following liberal
receipts at the yards, encouraged some selling
of provisions, resulting in an easy market.
At the close May pork was off lc at $12,851?
12.37. Lard was down 2c; ribs, 24J5c
lower, at $6.8554.67.

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan. 27. Special.) The
