Tone Was Very Strong, and Good Ad-i yances Were Made in Many "of the Specialties. NEW YORK. Jan. 26. The effects of the great storm on stocks were perceptible today only In the restricted volume cf dealings, the attendance at the Stock Exchange being a gooa deal curtailed. But while dealings were on a small scale, the tone was clearly strong. The widespread obstruction of traffic and the interruption to earning power by the storm were evidently considered to have had their due effect in yesterday's decline. That de cline, following two previous days', was re garded as having reached adeouate limits and (o hare approached the point of risk of overselling the market. The professional ele ment, therefore, reversed 1U atUtude and bought stocks today. The tone of foreign markets gar a cheerful impulse to the opening course of the market. The proclamation issued at St. Petersburg was accepted as intimation that the Russian government still has the situation well In hand and that the agitation of the public mind was subduing. Rumors also continued to circulate .of the likelihood of orerturea toward mediation to end the Russo-Japanese war. Prices of Americans -were up in Lon don before the opening here and buying for .foreign .account followed when our market opened. Stocks which were most acutely de pressed yesterday were most -affected on the recovery" today. Amalgamated Copper, from w&ich the dividends came off, was especially in demand, with considerable effect on senti ment. The recently consi!cuoQs firmness of Erie was still noticeable and strengthened the current supposition that this property Is to figure in somo Important coming railroad deal. The most conspicuous movements of the day were In the specialties, not aU of which wre explained. Tbe strength of the Chicago Ter minal Issues was connected with the original plan. Atchison was Inclined to lag. apparently from dissatisfaction at Its Japnd Issue The clearing out of weak speculative accounts by yesterday's reaction normally benefited, the technical situation of the market. Rates for time money further hardened to somo extent, which Is the only effect percep tible fromthe continued large demand for our gold. Remittances to Cuba on account of the Cuban loan subscription; the last Install mcnt of which remains to be paid, will soon be added to these requirements. Discounts were easier in London today and the price, of gold there was reduced, while sterling at Paris rose a fraction. Rates for exchange here were held steady. With the gathering force of the upward movement, stocks became falr!y buoyant later in the day, and most of the laggards being brought forward to share In the movement. and too closing was very strong.
