A private letter from" a rromlr.ent Iyndon commlsslon-housc, rcview-i--g the salmon fltuai early In January, says Red Alaska the most largely used hers In normal tUr.cc, and with British Columbia fish so highjn price, there should be a better cutlet for Alaska. Unfortunately.. however, the A P A., with their mysterious ways of doing business, have prrtty well killed the Je rr.and at the present time, and for some con- slderable time past their Meas of their 1IKK) pa-k wore so high that practically no business W8 done, and the market has ben existing cn the outside packs. We reekon at the pres ent time thero Is a stock in Lendou and Liver pool f some 450,000 cases rd Alaska, mainly cf the A. It is utterly Impossible to say what will be the out come of this iorItlon. We Imagjne that early in the year the. A. P. Ths most Double fact about tradlnr In Ktocbi tndnv mn the dertdMl hubsldenc of activity. Even with yesterday's excitement, the total, dealings for that .day 'fell below last week's average, which -rras above 1,000.000 shares, and today that avrr aga would haro been fully cut In half, but for the spasm of liquidation at the close. The market became almost Idle at times and the move-seat of prices was Intensely sluggish until star .the close. The tone, however, showed evident improve ment over that of yesterday, and prices started upward briskly from the outset. This was due In large part to the lens alarming view taken of the course of events In Russia. In & few individual stocks there was a resumption of attempts to lift prices. But the motives of the buying In these cases were rather rague and sot disclosed to the general public. Their sympathetic effect on the general list was also very moderate. The renewed 'rise in Northern Securities on the curb revived all the long standing rumors pointing to the widespread re sults to be expected from the settlement grow ing out of the Northern Securities case. The supposed imminence of the announcement of the Southern Pacific refunding plan was a contributory cause to the firmness of the Har- Timan stocks. There was a disposition to attribute the movement in Erie to a supposed connection with the wide-reaching settlement of the Northern Securities case which is & potent mystery for stimulating all sorts of movements In the market. But the firmness of the coal ers had a more substantial explanation lq ths statement of net earnings for December of the Central Railroad of New Jersey, disclosing favcrable conditions- Reports of heavy orders by railroads for bridge material were a help to United States Steel preferred. The initia tion of dividends- on Hide & Leather pre ferred was a favorable influence on the indus trial list generally. A sharp ris m Interna tional Mercantile Marine stocks on the curb was also an Influence In the Industrial list. Commission-house business was on a small scale, and there -was a clearly dlscernable dlS' nostUon among operators, outside of limited professional circles, to maintain a waiting at itwde In the speculation for the prerent. - The unsatisfactory response of the market to the advance In prices caused sufficient dis appointment to induce the active selling of the last hour, which more than wiped out the laborious gains of the previous 4" hours, and dowd the market weak and at net losses. The bond market was irregular. Total sales. $5,505,000. Cnlted States bonds were au un changed en call. CLOSING STOCK QUOTATIONS. Closln; Sales. Hlsh. Low.
