12 THE. MORNING ORKGOSI AS, WEDNESDAY JANUARY 18,. 1905. HEARS MANY TALES Grand Jury Listens to Numer ous Witnesses. INDICTMENTS SOON EXPECTED Geogre Sorensen Case Comes Up To dayMr. Heney Will Try to Re turn to San Francisco as Soon as Possible. The work of the Federal grand Jury la etlll progressing, but slowly. It is not probable that any Indictments will be re turned before next week owing to the length of the testimony now being Intro duced before the jurors, but it Is equally certain that when the start is made there twill be a bunch of accusations brought in which will even up the apparent inac tivity of the men during the two weeks F-om the witnesses who are being -called It is a bard matter even to guess at what jts being considered la the little room, for tthey come from all sections of the state ojid from different walks of life. Those (who live in Malheur County are ushered onto the presence of the Jury after some ,cne from Roseburg, and the next wit jiess will perhaps be from Central Ore gon. All this leads to the belief that lithe Government is sandwiching one case "with another in order to save time in Jthe long run, though such a course will pot be productive of indictments with the rapidity that might be noted had one line of evidence been followed through from 5th e beginning to the end. From some of the witnesses it may be Inferred that the case of Henry McEl fdrum is being considered, but this Is not e certainty for the same witnesses might ave tales to tell of the connection of Williamson, Hermann or Hays with deals ,rwhlch are supposed to be under investi gation by the Jury. From indications, however, it is doubted tlf any report will be -made this week, es (jpecially as the George Sorensoa bribery atrial will be called today, and this will Stake a part of the time of Mr. Heney in the bearing. By the middle of the com ing week it is conceded that a large num ber of indictments will be returned, and lit is hinted that the next return will practically close the work of the jury for this session. It Is known that Mr. Heney wishes to Return to San Francisco at as early a date cls possible. He has interests there which ere suffering by reason of his absence. His clients are becoming impatient, it is eald, at the delay being imposed upon Important matters pending in the Califor nia courts, and many requests are being made upon the District Attorney to re turn to his private practice, for a short time at least. The fact that not a single indictment has been returned since the holidays lends color to the theory that the jury will close Its work with the next batch of in dictments taken Into court. This is borne out by the fact that it was expected that some return would be made in a few days at the latent after the re-convention of Ihe Jury. It is, therefore, the supposition that the Indictments of several persons may have been voted upon but not ns yet made public by reporting to the court. It can almost be stated with certainty that In several instances sufficient testi mony has been offered to justify indict ment. The fact that many wltnessetj Stave been summoned from different parts of the state, who have been examined and discharged, leads to the belief that indict ments have been voted and pigeonholed until the entire list is ready to announce at the completion of the jury's labors. It Is safe to predict that the end of the month will see the end of the Jury, for the present at least. Mew Officers at Walla Walla Prison. AVAIjLA. "WALLA. Wash., Jan. 17. (Special.)
