THE MORNiyG 0REGPfr7AN, TUESDAY,, JAOTABY 0, 1905. 15 DECLINE IN SUGAR Net.Cash-Price Is Reduced Ten Cents. GRANULATED QUOTED AT $6.05 Market Very Strong at the New Fig ure With Probabilities of an Upward Movement Ad vance In Eggs. Portland Jobbers yesterday made 10c re duction In the price of sugar. Dry granulated is now quoted at $6.0S. An all-around advance looked for. but Instead a lower net cash .price' has been fixed. In the face of this the market Is strop and actually higher. The real change was In the manner of billing which ha given the retailer the opportunity to buy 30c lower than last week. The change In conditions at San Francisco, as was an nounced in this paper Sunday, has. cleared the atmosphere to uch an extent that a general upward movement may now be looked for. However. It may or may not come, and no en In th trade professes to say what the fu ture will bring forth. One thing only la per tain, and that Is that'-ihe undertone' of -the market la strong. San Francisco prices went Tip 16c Saturday, and New Tork yesterday ad vanced JO point. Advices received from Xew Tork w: It was learned from an autborlttlve source that the contract between the Hawaiian sugar rlanters and the American Sugar Refining Company, which expires on October J, 1005. has len renewed for three years with no material hangee from the terms of the contract now In force. According, however, to advices re ceived from Honolulu via San Francisco the term are m.r favorable to the ' Hawaiian plantation than were those of the previous rontraeU The present; basis is c 0ft the sell ing price on delivery at San Francisco and l10th off the selling price on delivery t New Tork. The arrangements in thft matter of blpment 'a to the amount that "would go overland from San Francisco to New Tork and the amount to be shipped around the Horn differ from the-present arrangement." WAR IN WHISKY TRADE. Trust Announces a X'urther Cut In the Trie. PEORIA." III.. Jan. 8. Independent whisky men am somewhat nonplussed by the action of the trust Jn reducing the basing price from f 123 to $1.22 ' Representatives of the thre big independent houses in this city ald today that they had not been officially notified .of the cut. but they supposed they would meet It. The Independents, after a hurried consulta tion, decided- at once to announce a reduction of 1 cent in their basing price, which would make It $1.23. Instead of $1.3. They refuse to recognise the last cut made by the trust from L2 to $1.23. but followed the cut an nounced this morning. The trust people declare that, although the Independent basing price Is publlehed as 1 cent higher than that of the trust, yet their aetual selling price is the same. The action of the trust came as a surprise, s It was supposed that a sort of temporary trpee had been patched up between the war ring elements. London Apple Market. Clewing Is Dull and Weak Increasing Ease f Money News ef Day Favorable. NEW TORK. Jan. 9. The second week of the New Year In the stock market started off with some animation, and brisk advance -were scored pretty generally. But the start proved a false one. Ilka that of the first week of the year, and Interest had almost completely died out by the afternoon. It was apparent that the movement represented very largely & trial of speculative sentiment In professional opera tions. Last week the halt and the reaction In the market were attributed. In a considerable degree, to the influence of the threat of legis lation to regulate corporations. The Inference of the professional traders that the seller of last week on this account would turn buyers on the new situation was general, but proved to be Ill-founded. The bank statement of Saturday was little regarded, in view of the Increasing ease of the money market. Loans for GO days could be had below 3 per cent today, and for six month the rate fell to 3U per cent, "with growing complaisance on the part of lenders regarding collateral. The operations for fu ture extensive gold Imports this week were also deprived of much of their effect, by this condition of the local money market. With discounts advancing In London and the pros pect of some further large loan issue In that market, the movement of capital to that cen ter from here with money at the present un re munerative rates Is not to be wondered at. The routine newa of the day continued fa vorable to values. Railroad traffic officials again reported the freight maximum limited only by the capacity of tho railroads to carry what waa offered, while heavy car shortages Oa.d to congest what cannot be promptly car ried. The morning's upward movement was fairly general, as was tho afternoon reaction. Many of the morning's gains were wiped out In the afternoon, and the closing was dull and weak. There waa a quieter market for bonds; and the price movement waa irregular. Total sales, par lvalue. $4,385,000. United States 3a coupon advanced and the new 4s a on call. . .
