10 5?HEV MORNING OREQONIAN, MONDAY, JANUARY 9, 1905. ON FIRE IN A STORM British Steamer Loaded With Cotton Has Terrible Trip, SUNKEN ROCK BREAKS STEM Firemen in Forecastle Overcome by Fumes of Burning Fabric and Phosphate Active Work Saves the Vessel. NEW TORK, Jan.. 9. The British steamer Zambesi, from Savannah, for Bremen, with a cargo of cotton and phosphate, put into this port this morn ing, after a most eventful voyage, with ber cargo of cotton on fire and with several of her crew sick- Captain Rooney of the Zambesi reports that he .called from Savannah on New Year's day. All went well, however, until January 6, when, the steamer struck a submerged rock, which broke the stem and stove in several of the bowplates under water, causing the fore peak to fill with water. Heavy weather prevailed and furi ous seas flpoded the forward decks. On January 6 volumes of smoke were seen pouring from the fore hatches, and it was evident the cotton In the hold was on Are. The ship's hose was quickly connected and the fire was soon under control. Saturday morning five fire men who were asleep in the forecastle were discovered In an unconscious con dition from the fumes of the burning cotton and phosphate. They were re moved from the forecastle to the steamer's cabin, where they revived, and were able to resume work this morning. The steamer will discharge the cargo In her forward holds and will probably go into dock for repairs. She halls Irom London, and consigned to Sechs Moore & Co. ANIMALS' WANDERINGS. Rate Most Migratory Some Lem mings' Race With Death. Answers. The fable of the country mouse and the town mouse has a foundation In fac. Mice occasionaly migrate in large num bers when food grows scarce, and travel considerable distances to fresh homeA Farmers in a part of Perthshire had a good reatn to become aware of this fact, when, a couple of years ago, vast swarms of mice invaded their cornfields at harvest, time. But the mouse only travels when it has to. The rat. on the contrary, seems to take a yearly outing, in very much the same fashion as do human beings. Rats are the roost migratory creatures in the world. Whole troops of rats leave the towns at the end of bummer and. spend a month or two in the country, appar ently in order to enjoy the change of food which the country affords at that time of the year in the way of fresh fruit and grain. Before the cold weather sets In they are all back again in their old quarters. Reindeer migrate with the same regu larity as swallows. They move south when Winter sets in, but as soon as ever the snow begins to melt they travel Readily north, 'sometimes for as much as a thousand miles. To end a holiday by deliberate suicide is so strange a phenomenon that for a long time naturalists looked upon the stories of the migration of the lemmings as an improbable llctlon. Yet the facts are beyond dispute. At irregular inter vals these rat-like creatures start out from their homes in the fastnesses of Northern Scandinavia in huge droves, numbering tens of thousands, and travel steadily southward. Death pursues them in a hundred forms. Hawks and other birds of prey hover above them. Thou sands are drowned In rivers. Yet the rest Ftrugglc on until they reach the sea. They do not stop. They plunge In. swim cut and struggle on, until at last their strength falls and they drown. Not one ever returns from this Journey of death. Actresses Short-Lived. Chicago Journal. There Is a gap of 20 years left by the death of lime. Janauscbek and Mrs. Gil bert. The latter was over 80 and the great Bohemian actress was nearly 76. Among the women of the stage who sur vive thero Is not one who approaches either of these famous artists In the mat ter of years. Clara Morris is less than 5, Mrs. Yeamans hovers in the yune neighborhood, and the score of famous actresses of the last generation who still tread the boards are all In the neighbor hood of 60. Actors seem to live longer than their sisters. A year ago, before death be gan to thin their ranks, Couldock. Jef ferson, Stoddart, etc., had a hundred living contemporaries, and many of them are still living, although they have passed the age of 80. Most of the favor lteo of the stage seem to drop away be fore they reach 50. Marie Jansen saw her zenith before she was 33 and she went into obscurity before she reached 40. Pauline Markham, of whom it was said. "Her arms are like the lost arms of the Venus of Mllo," went into oblivion at. 40. and now she is in care of a Harlem tenement-house. Marion Manola is yet under 50, but where Is this once brilliant prima donna of the McCaul Opera Company now? BUSINESS ITEMS. If Baby I CcKisg Teeth. sure and use that old and well-tried remedy. SCrv.
