Will Arrive HE FOUGHT THE BEEF TRUST Special Attorney of Department of Justice Made Brilliant Record Mr. Heney .Returns From California Friday. Oliver E. Pagin, -who has been ap pointed a special attorney by the De partment of Justice to assist Francis J, Heney in the prosecution of the land-fraud cases in Oregon, will reach the city this evening on the Chicago Portland Special to begin his work. Mr. Pagln was formerly assistant United States District Attorney for the district ot Northern Illinois, and while la that capacity made a record for himself through his prosecution of some cases against the Beef Trust and In the conviction of counterfeit ers, which cases attracted attention to his work in Washington and re sulted In his appointment as a special attorney in the Department of Justice. Mr. Pagin will begin to look over the case now being Investigated here and will be ready to assist Mr. Heney in his work by the time the Federal grand Jury convenes again on Tues day morning, January 10. Mr. Heney will reach Portland from his trip to San Francisco on Friday evening and will at once begin to pick up the investigations where he loft them to attend to his case in San Francisco. More Evidence Secured. During the time that Mr. Heney has been away the cause of the Govern ment has not been allowed to lag by reason of his absence, for each, day the special agents of the Interior De partment and the representatives of the Secret Service Department have been busy in strengthening the points made by securing additional evidence. Colonel A. R. Greene, who is in charge of the special agents, has gone to some Southern Oregon district where he Is looking into the situation there. Others of the special force have been sent Into various parts, of the state, and even Into adjacent states. In the search for corroborative evidence which is necessary for the safety of the r-. ....... oocno W -T Rums, of UUlCtUUlCUkO ... the Secret Service Department, is in charge of the apartments of Mr. Heney and has been conducting- the gather ing of evidence on lines decided upon before the attorney left for the South. Citizens of Other States Involved. "When Mr. Heney returns on Friday the old activity will again be seen around the headquarters of the Gov - eminent camp and by Tuesday morn ing everything will be in readiness for the Test of the session. It has been stated by Mr. Heney that the edge of the land frauds has alone been touch ed by the indictments returned up to this date and that most sensational developments are to be watched for from this time on. Rumor and story has linked many prominent names with the net being woven by the Govern ment, and It Is hinted that when all Is finished distant states will hold citl sens Implicated In Oregon frauds. The Oregon frauds will not be the ind of the trouble, it Is said, for evl ' Jence being gathered here Is linking some of the accused persons with Ida- ho, "Washington. California and other states where the timber has been ab sorbed by syndicate and private pur chaser and speculator. Just as the ' Hyda-Dlmond case In California brought to light in some degree the conspiracies of Oregon, so will the prosecutions here point to still more Illegal transactions in other states -where the conditions have not as yet been under the omciai scrutiny ot the Government, but where fraud Is known . to exist and In which direction the path of the prosecution Is leading.
