12 THE MORNING OBEGONIAN TUESDAY, - JAXTJAXaY 3, 1905. TWO ACCIDENTALLY SHOT LOADED GUNS CAUSE PAINFUL INJURIES. Frank Marston and Samuel Balaje Grasp-Guns by Muzzles, and Are Badly Hurt. In different parte o the country, at the samo time of day, in the same manner and by -weapons of the same make, Frank J. Marston and Samuel Balaje were shot through the right -wrists and arms yes terday. It is one or the most remarkable coincidences on record. Marston lives on his father's ranch near Stella. Yesterday morning at 10"o'clock he and his parent -went out to attend to some trork. The young man carried his gun. When the two had occasion to stop, Frank placed the weapon in the brush. As he turned about, he saw some rab bits leap from the grass and start to run. "Wishing to try his marksmanship, Frank grasped the muzzle of his gun and start ed to draw it from the brush. In so doing it was discharged, and he received the greater part of the load in his right wrist and arm. Just above the wrist. Some of the shot narrowly missed his father, who was standing near, and it is regarded as very fortunate that both were not killed. Suffering intense pain, Frank hurried to his home. A carriage conveyed him to a steamer, which he and his father boarded for Portland. Arriving here, after a te dious trip, end one of much agony for the victim of the accident, they called upon Dr. A. -C. Panton, who dressed the wound. The unfortunate young man was placed in Good Samaritan Hospital at noon, where he Is resting easily. It Is feared that amputation may be necessary, al though physicians are endeavoring to forego an operation. Samuel Balaje, an Italian, was Ihe other victim. At 10 o'clock yesterday morning he was working In the grocery store at Corns tock. He had occasion to remove a loaded' gun from one of the shelves. He also grasped the muzzle of the..' weapon, and suffered similar injuries. He was brought, to Portland and placed In St, "Vincent's Hospital. FATHER IS IN" FRENZY. The Sorrowful Tale of a Deductive Mind and Somnambulism. This is a tale of blighted affection, caused by the visions of a deductive mind and the wail of a wandering cat. Ellis Haslam has the deductive mind and a theory of how detectives should act. He also has some thoughts about the disappearance of Charley Ross years and years ago. Saturday evening a Government detec tive went into a barber shop to get shaved. Conversation drifted to detec tives and what they had done. "Now," said Mr. Haslam. as he lathered the upper Up of the man 'from Washing ton, "If the detectives had Just done a little different In the case of Charley Ross, he wou'd have been returned to his parent." Then he told what should have been done. The detective wiped the lather out of his mouth and took the other side. In the evening when the barber reached his home he told his wife of the argu ment. Inferring that he knew something of sleuth work and that he was sure the detectives made a bungle of the work or Charley Ross would now be at home In Philadelphia. Mrs. Haslam did not un derstand all of the details, so the discus sion became extended. There is a little girl In the Haslam family who is now the possessor of her first beau. Since mamma and papa mo nopolized the conversation, the little hostess asked permission to take her company into the reception-room, which permission was granted. Mamma and papa went to bed and the former dropped into a troubled doze. Specters of all the reputed kidnapped boys In the country came to her in a dream. The argument had evidently af fected her, for she did not sleep as sound as usual. Here is where the cat came Into the tale. Two aged veterans met upon the fence and lifted their heads toward the rising moon. Mrs. Haslam stirred uneasily in her sleep, and as the visions of Charley Ross, a prisoner In the hands of brutal men faded into the environs of her own home, Ehe roused her husband from his dream. "Ellis," she said "someone Is kidnap ping our daughter.'" The detective in the mah awakened, though his mind slumbered. He sprang from his bed and rushed into the kitchen. Some member of the family had been splitting kindling with a large knife, and the half-sleeping man seized the weapon with a relentless grasp. Then, wild-eyed, he burst into the reception room, orna mented chiefly with the butcherknlfe and an abbreviated nightshirt. One despairing look was enough for the caller and he fled before the upraised weapon without waiting for his coat and hat. He was In too big a hurry to carry anything. He has not been back. That is why the affection is blighted. A deductive mind Is good when awake, but asleep. Is not apparently conducive to sociability. Real Estate Transfers. M. J. Hatfield and wife to D. M.
