HISS., a. pioneer of 1S53 and a prominent citizen of Polk County, where he was a member of Vixz Board of Commissioners for a number of years, returned to Port land from an. Eastorn trip, yosterday morning, and went to his home at Crow ley this morning. Mr. Rlggs left Oregon, on Novorobor 7. and went direct tp' St. Louis. After visiting the Louisiana Pur chase -Exposition a few days, he -went to La Grange, 111., his former home, and south to New Orleans, and came on to Oregon by the southern route, stopping all along to tako notes with, respect to the possibilities of the region he traveled through, z compared with Oregon. After careful investigation, he returned home better pleased than over with Oregon. Everywhere he went he found people talking about the Lewis and Clark Expo sition, and predicts that the number -who visit Portland next year -will far exceed the expectations of the most sanguine. Fire Was Incendiart. That the fire in his grocery store at Twelfth and Washington streots last Thursday was the -work of an incendiary Is the firm conviction of F. H. Reovcs, and he has offered a reward of $100 for any infor mation leading to the identity or arrest of such party. A clue has been received ;$yhich may lead to llio arrest of the culprit. Two men claim to have seen a young man rush out of the basement of the store just immediately before tho fire broke out. and aftor halting a momont to look, around ho ran up Washington street. These men were able to furnish the police with a good description of tho man they saw, and the officers think thoy are now on.his track. It is thought by Mr. Reeves that the fire was started as a means of revenge, and It is hinted that this fact, taken -with the description of tho sup posed incendiary, furnishes a good clue. Pioneer Brothers UsfiTHD. Mr. Jacob' McReynolds, of Uklab. IfraatlllR County, came to Portland a few days ago to visit his brother William, -whom he had not seen for a number of years. Both, broth ers crossed the plains In 1S49. from Mis sourl. Their paternal grandfather was at the battle of icing's Mountain. On the maternal side one grandfather was a loyalist, but ho was shot In the leg ad taken prisoner, and ho thus was con verted Into a rebel, and later fougHt for independence. Jacob McReynolds is now In his SOth year, and his brother In his Slst. but both men are woll preserved and give promise of many years of usefulness. Policeman Robbed and House Burniid. After an examination of tho burned home of Special Policeman J. M. Roberts, It is believed Uie fire was sot by an incendiary. An Investigation Is In progress. Revenge is believed to be the motive for tho act. During the fire Mrs. Roberts was robbed of $15, which was In a purse in the house. It is not thought anyone but firemen -wore In the house. They -wore the first ones In and the last out. it is said. Tradbs Council Meets. The regular weekly meeting of the Federated Trades Council -was woll attended last night, but aside from the usual routine business nothing was done. The near approach of Christmas apparently gavo the mem bers matters other .than business to think of, and the meeting was held in record time. Central Addition Store Robbed. The store of M. E. Barton, in Central Addition to Mount Tabor was broken into and robbed Thursday night, ?2 in cash and a quantity of canned goods being taken. The burglars are supposed to have been hoboes, -who. were aftor food. Open for Business. The fire was con fined to our basement and our store is open as usual. Our Christmas stock of nuts, etc, not being damaged, -we will be able to fill all orders prfemptly. F. H, Reeves, 12th & Wash. Phone Main 1931.
