14 :he morning oregonian, Tuesday, December 20, 1904 STUDY OF HELEN GOULD SHRINKS FROM CONSPICUOUS NESS BEFORE THE PUBLIC. She Cannot Accept Intrusions, and a Camera Is to Her an instrument of oTrture. Harper's Bazar. She Is, In the main, a timid -woman sot In the sense of dreading- danger, but of fearing initiative. Sho shows this also in her shrinking Jram consciousness. Nenc of the breezy, iwme times blatant, case and freedom of the newer type is hers. Nor has she lost self-consciousness in the largeness of her work and its impor tance. She resolutely declines to be a public figure, in spite of her public spirit and her public usefulness. The casual camera, the famliar interview are not to her liking. She cannot accept their Intrusions and dismiss their memory with a tolerant shrug; she cannot cater good naturedly to the curiosity of the world as is the traditional habit of royalty, rul ers and the great in general. It may almost be said that Miss Gould's only ostentation Is her half-morbid un ostentation. It shows itself in various ways. For Instance, when her town house on Fifth avenue is closed and she comes In from Irvington, she does not take a suite at any gorgeous hotel. She goes to the Martha Washington, that admirable refuge for smaller incomes than hers. She dines in the public dining-room. There ehe is not distinguishable, by richness or "smartness" of attire, or in air of leader ship, from half the other young women who enjoy its hospitality. Her law-school course illustrates another trait In her character. She is careful, judicious, an excellent business woman even in the bestowal of her charities. The misdirected fervor of the sentimental giver of gifts is not hers. She Is rortunate that It la not. Emotional philanthropy would loag ago have made her a bankrupt. Her fortune, at a conservative estimate, is about $16,000,000; if she complied with all the requests for money which she receives It would take her something less than two years to dispose of It. She receives about 100 letters a day asking for sums which make a weekly total of about $150. 000. Sho Is asked to buy vessels for old sea captains, to raise mortgages on West ern farms, to train the voices of embryo Pauls on the prairies, to educate young men for the ministry, to contribute to ladles aid society fairs In country villages, to endow all sorts of institutions. Her flf a strikingly unextravagant woman In matters of dress and all personal ex penditure, she is asked by prospective brides to provide sums ranging as high as $2000 for thoir modest trousseau. Par ents write her enthusiastic letters describ ing the charms' of young .Helen Miller Gould Smiths or Joneses, and saying how gratefully a nucleus for these young la dies' future dowries will be received. In one banner week the begging public in cluding, of course, the respectable beg gars for worthy charities as well as the mere prayers an unsophisticated kindness asked for ;i.5O0,O00! PROOFREADER AGAIN. Some of the Vagaries That Bring Gray Hairs. Lawronce Hutton. in Critic. The most perplexing and absurd of these typographical errors tried to find its way. but fortunately was captured on its way Into the columns of Harper's Weekly. At the time of the union of the Asfbr, the Tiiaen and the Lenox li braries, I wrote a long and hurried pa per of several columns In length con cerning the three institutions and their founders. The Journal was to go to press early on Saturday, and the article was not finished until very late on Friday night. The messenger boy took It to Franklin Square the next morning very early, and by the time of my arrival at the editorial rooms, the long, wet galley proofs, unseen as yet by professional proofreaders, were ready for Inspection. Printed on different presses and in dif ferent rooms, they came down In an ir regular way, without sequence, without head or tail. I skipped from paragraph to paragraph, from subject to subject, in a most confusing manner, the printer's devil standing Impatiently at my olbow, the typesetters crying for "revise"; and all went swimmingly along, until I came to the following remarkable sentence: "New York, perhaps, has never fully real ized, until this day. how greatly it has been enriched by the receipt of the vest buttons of James Lenox!" Why "vest buttons"? T had no recol lection of writing anything about Mr. Lenox's vest buttons, or about any but tons of any sort, belonging to Mr. Lenox nr to his library. And I could not re member. In the haste of composition, what I had wrjten. But I certainly had not mentioned vest buttons, which could, in no possibility, have anv con nection with the subject in hand. At last, in despair, "copy" was sent for. when It was discovered that Mr. Lenox's "yest buttons" were "the vast bequests" of that generous, public-spirited gentle man! Still I find myself quoted as picking up many "earnest persons," Instead of "hon est pennies"; as taking a "dog." instead of a "day." out of my vacation; as being possessed of a coach and four, and "a gold gallows." instead of "gold galore" as "aiming from the train" Instead of arriving on the train"; as "arranging myself Instead of "arraying myself." in a golf suit; as driving and putting "gold balls" instead of "golf balls": as making the cook "garbage." instead of "garnish," the dish with parsley; as making the dairy maid "charm the butler" when her business was to "churn the butter"; and finally, as speaking of a friend as being "slightly dead" Instead of "slightly deaf!" I can understand the dairy maid as being willing .and ready, to "charm the butler"; but again I ask why "vest but tons"? The American Soldier. ' World Today. Afoot or on horseback, regular or vol unteer, as you see him today, our "man behind the gun" is a man worth know ing. Take him all in all. and a physically sounder and morally stralghter soldier doesn't live or dwell on the face of the globe. Like English "Tommy Atkins," as well as the sailor Jackles of Anglo-Saxon blood, he has his faults and -limitations. He "comes higher" than do the rankers of other lands, but he fights harder. With fewer numbers he accomplishes greater results. He has patience Illimita ble in face of a turbulent mob of his own people, but he pulls trigger quick, sudden and sure when he gets the word. He Is the bugbear of demagogue orators before an olection. but the sure defense of society at any tlme He presided over Chicago's early infancy, and thrice since the great Civil War he has come with fixed bayonet to stand between her and anarchy. He is proud of his flag and his country. He is stout hearted, clean-limbed, law-abiding, self respecting as a rjile. He wants to be held and hailed as a man, not a boy. He de votes reasonable time and thought to his drill, but he delights in healthful, hearty, outdoor sports, baseball, football and polo preferred. He sometimes slights the little niceties of military carriage and cour tesies, but he will cheerfully submit to the sternest discipline, the hardest pri vations, the heaviest trials, when he knews thfe need; and, finally, when It comes to fighting, he will charge with finer fury and enthusiasm or hold his grpund with more grim, dogged tenacity, . and all the time shoot with greater skill nd sredsian than any other man-at-arms HOTEL Fifth and Washington Streets EUROPEAN PLAN Booms. $1.60 to 3.00 Tcr Day. His one great "wish seems to be that the peo ple he so loyally serves might know him as he is a man to depend on In fair weather or foul, a soldier to bo proud of at all times. A Heroic Fisherman. Few Labrador fishermen can swim. "You see, we has enough o the water without goln' to bother wl It when we are ashors," a man said to mo only the other day. Yet this very man had fallen overboard In the open sea no less than four times, and had only been saved on one occasion by catching the line thrown him in his teeth and holding- on till he wag hauled aboard. His hands were too numbed to be of any use. Still, this fact does not. deter them from facing the water. In an open bay In Labrador lives one solitary settler. In the Spring- of the year, when the ice was Just breaking- up, the man's two lads were out on the bay ice after seals, when, all of a sudden, It gave way, and the lads fell through. The father, seeing it from the shore, did not Ticsltate. but, seizing a fishing-line, hastily fastened one end round his body..and giv ing the other end to his daughter to hold, he ran out to the hole through which they had fallen. He jumped Into the water, actually went down and fetched up the bodies, too late, alas, however, to restore life to them after that cold water. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL REPORT. PORTLAND, Dec 19.
