Funeral of Edgar Van Avert. The
luneral of Edgar Van Avery, of Albina,
took place yesterday morning from St.
Mary's- Church on "Williams avenue and
Stanton street. Here solemn requiem mass
-was said by Rev. "W. A. Daly in the pres
ence of his relatives and friends, and In
terment was in the Sellwood Cemetery.

Annual, Meeting op Oregon Histor

Onxt Cbossed-Wire Fire. Hundreds of
people nocked to the sceno last night at 8
o'clock when fire apparatus dashed to the
Marquam building. Sixth and Morrison
streets. In answer to a still alarm. Only
the crossing of two electric wires caused
the excitement. Damage, to the extent of
J5 was wrought to the casing.
Given an Appointment. Dr. Samuel C.
Slocum is again Assistant City Physician,
he having been appointed yesterday morn
ing by the Health Board. This is a source
of great satisfaction to the police, as his
office is near the Central Station and fre
quently a surgeon or physician is seeded
quickly.
"Wellb-Fargo & Co. and tho Pacific Ex- j
press Co. will keep their office, corner
Fourth and Yamhill streets, open Sunday,
December 18, from 10 A. M. to 2 P. M. for
tho convenience of holiday shippers. Of
fice will also remain open during the week
beginning December 13 until 8 P. M. each

H. R. Long Vert Sick. H. R. Dong, a
well-known Portland business man, has
returned to his home at 280 East Sixth
street North, from Hot Lake, Or., where
he went for his health. There was no
improvement in his case and he is now
considered in a critical condition.
First Presbyterian Church. Services
tomorrow at 10:30 A. M. and 7:30 P. M. In
the morning Rev. E. L. House, D. D., will
preach. In the evening Dr. Hill will preach
the third of a series of sermons on "Old
Pictures in New Frames," the topic being
"The Different Day."
Grange Election. Annual meeting and
election of officers of Milwaukie Grange,

Admits He Siafpzd Him. In a report
to Chief of Police Hunt, Patrolman Gal
braith stated that he slapped L. C Ruhl,
sending him sprawling to the sidewalk
Thursday night, as he was holding him
prisoner and waiting for a patrol wagon
from the Central Station. Ruhl received
a gash on the back of his head, but how
this was done is not known. An investiga
tion is being made. Charges have not yet
been preferred against the officer. He ar
rested Ruhl on a charge of refusing to
move on, and In tho Municipal Court yes
terday morning the defendant was
fined 510.

No Need of Public Aid. Chief of Po
lice Hunt detailed Policemen Reslng and
"White to investigate the case of alleged
destitution, reported by Sergeant- Hoge
boom. at 402 Water street A family
named Johnson lives there. The officers
reported back that there is no need for
public aid, as the mother is able to work
and the family has food.

ment has announced a modification
on Its rate on iron between
Portland and "Washington points. Hereto
fore the rate on bar iron to Seattle. Ta
coma and Gray's Harbor points has been
12 cents per hundred pounds. Owing to
tho requests of several of the large ship
ping firms of the city the company has
Increased the rate to cover rod, band and.
hoop Iron as well as the bar product- The
new rate will be effective December 19.
The modification will cover the shipments
to Belllngham, and Everett at the old rate
of 1714 cents per hundred to thopa points
for all the kinds of Iron mentioned.
