Portland, Oregon, December 6, 1904. 33IAGKITUDE OP THE UMVEESE Speculations Upon a Vast Subject by an Astronomer.- Professor Simon Newcomb In Harper's. "Imagine round our solar system as a center (for in matters relating to the universe our whole system 'is merely a point) a sphere with a radius 400.000 times the distance of the sun. An idea of this distance may bo gained by re flecting that light, making' the circuit of tho earth seven times in a second, and reaching us from the sun In eight minutes and 20 seconds, would require seven years to reach the surface of tho sphere we have supposed. Now, tho first result of measures of parallax Is that within this enormous sphere there is, besides our sun in the center, only a single star; namely. Alpha Centaurl. "Now, supposo another sphere, having a radius 800,000 times the distance of the sun, so that its surface is twice as far as that of the Inner sphere. By the lavyof cubes the volume of space within this second sphere 13 eight times as great as that within the first. So far as can be determined, there are about eight stars within this sphere." We cannot be quite sure of the number, because there may be stars within the sphere of which the parallax Is not yet detected; and or tnose supposed to be within It, one or two are so near the surface that we cannot say whether they arc really within or without It. But the number eight is not egregl pusly In error. "We may Imagine the spheres extended In' this way Indefinitely, but the result for the number of stars within them becomes uncertain, owing td the Increasing difficul ties of measuring parallaxes so minute. The general trend of such measures up to the present time is that the number of stars in any of these spheres will be about equal to the units of volume which they comprise when we take for this unit tho smallest and Innermost of the spheres, having a radius 400,000 times the sun's dis tance. We are thus enabled to form some general Idea of how thickly the stars are sown through space. V o cannot claim any numerical exactness for this Idea, but in the absence of better methods it does afford us some basis for reasoning. "Now we can carry on our computation as we supposed the farmer to measure the extent of his wheat field. Let us suppose that there are 125,000,000 stars in tho heavens. This Is an exceedingly rough estimate, but let us make the supposition for the time being. Accepting the view that they are nearly equally scattered throughout space, It will follow that they must be contained within a volume equal to 125,000,000 times the sphere we have taken as our unit. We find the distance of. the surface of this sphere by extracting the cube. root of this number, which gives lis 500. We may therefore say, as the re sult of a very rough estimate, that the number of stars we have supposed would be contained within a distance found by multiplying 400,000 times the distance of the sun by 500; that Is, that they are con tained within a region whose boundary Is 200,000,000 times the distance Of the sun. This 13 a distance through which light would travel In about 3C00 years: "It la not Impossible that the number of stars is much greater than that we have supposed. Let us grant that there are eight times as many, or 1,000,000,000. Then wp should have to extend the boundary of our universe twice as far, carrying it to a distance which light would require 060O years to travel. "Thu inquiring reader may here ask an other question. Granting that all the stars we can see are contained within, this limit, may there not be any number of stars without the limit which are invisible only because they are too far away to be seen? "This question may be answered quite definitely If we grant that light from the most distant stars meets with no obstruc tion In reaching U3. The most conclusive answer Is afforded by the measure of star light. If the stars extended out indefinite ly, then the number of those of each order of magnitude would be nearly four times that of the magnitude next brighter. For example, we should have nearly four times as many stars of the stxth magnitude as of the fifth; nearly four times as many of "the seventh as of the sixth, and so on In definitely. Now, It Is actually found that while this ratio of Increase Is true for the brighter stars, it is not so fof the fainter ones, and that the Increase in the number of the latter rapidly falls off when we make count of the fainter telescopic stars. In fact, it has long been known that, were tho universe Infinite In extent and the stars equally scattered through all space, the whole heavens would blaze with the Jight of countless millions of distant stare separately invisible even without the tele scope. "The only way In which this conclusion can be Invalidated is by tho possibility that the light ofthe stars Is in sbmo way extinguished or obstructed In its passage through space. A theoryto this e,ffeet w&3 "propounded by Struve nearly a century ago, but It has since been found that tho facts as he set them forth do not justify ,the conclusion, which was, in fact, rather hypothetical. The theories of modem sci ence converge toward the view that in the pure ether of space no single ray of light can ever be lost, no matter how far It may travel. But there Is another pos sible cause for the existence of light. Dur ing the last few years discoveries of dark and thefore invisible stars have been made by mens of tho spectroscope with a success which would have been quite In credible a very few year? ago. and which even, today must excite wonder and ad miration. The general conclusion Is that, beside, the shining stars which exist In space, there may be any number of dark ones, forever Invisible in dur telescopes. May It not be that these bodies are so numerous as to cut off tho light which we would otherwise rccelvofrora the mQre distant bodies of the universe? It 'Is of course impossible to answer thlsrauestion In a positive way, but the .probable con clusion is a negative, cne . .We may; say with certainty that dark stars, are not so numerous as to cut off. any Important part of tho light from, the stars of the Milky Way, because, if .they did. the latter would not bo so clearly seen as it IS. Since we have reason to believe that the Milky Way comprises the more distant stars of our system, wo may feel fairly confident that not much light can be cut oft by dark bodies from the most distant region to which our telescopes can penetrate. Up to this distance we see the stars just as they arc niven within the limit of the universe as we understand it, it Is llkely that more than one-half the stars which actually exist aje too faint to be seen by human vision, even when armed with the most powerful telescopes. But their in visibility Is due only to their distance- and the faintness of their intrinsic lights and not to any obstructing agency." SICKNESS A DISGRACE, AH at Fau!t in Not Knowing Illness Is Penalty of Ignorance. Saturday Review. Unfortunately, the commonplaces of physiology lire as frequently unfamiliar to the majority of the rich as to the masses of" the poor. The recognition that with our existing knowledge constant de viations from health are actually a dis grace is as absent from the mansion as fr,om the cottage. The responsibility of civic duties and of rightly regulated al truisms needs Impressing on all classes alike. It Is true that at the present mo- j ment considerable uneasiness exists as to j the quality -of the web of National llfe 1 Do the flaws It exhibits reflect upon the warp of the wealthy or the woof of the i masses? Is the thread of our National stock at fault? Are the shuttles of train- ! ing carelessly thrown? Are the looms out of date? At the first glance It might appear that the faulty threads are to be found wholly among the unskilled laborers or the indus trial classes. It cannot be contradicted that the Infantile mortality rate may be taken as a sure indication of overcrowded locality or of maternal occupation. The thousands of children who fall victims annually to want of care when suffering from measles or whooping-cough are "un doubtedly chiefly resident in the slums of our great cities or in the cottages of our rural districts. The drunkard, the de graded, the defective are all popularly classified as units among the- great un washed, and as the principal sources of menace to England's prosperity. Less superficial observation will, how ever, reveal other contributory agents to the growing dependence of our population of all ranks upon the continual supervi sion of the medical profession, which may be in part, by no means wholly, looked upon as an Indication of diminished vigor and sound health. Crowded as are the hospitals and dispensaries for the poor throughout the country, theproportlon of ailing or debilitated among the paying population can be but little smaller. It Is true, surgery can now afford relief to minor as well as to major ills, where formerly passive endurance was the only course; but, apart from this laudable aid to human needs, will not every doctor frankly confess to the demands upon his tlmo made by the carelessness and in excusable ignorance of the well-to-do? Underfed or overfed children; errors of dress In infa.icy which lay the seeds of future suffering; neglect of adequate light or ventilation in nursery or schoolroom; insufficient normal exercise; late hours; overstimulation of already excitable brains; these are but a few of the need less handicaps too often laid upon the children of the wealthy. They can in deed be ameliorated, perhaps remedied; but at what cost of irritation, disappoint ment, suffering, and money, not to men tion diminished powers of resistance, and perhaps permanent scars! Neither are these sins of commission or omission confined to children. Dyspep sia and shaken nerves: unsymmetrical fig ures or defects concealed by the wiles of art; premature loss of power or eccentrici ties which verge on insanity, are pres ent among adult dupes to fashion's va garies or wealthy slaves to self-indulgence, where not the excuse of even a crumpled roseleaf can be raised In extenu ation of the thoughtlessness or willful Ig norance which are their promoting causes. The attempt to condense in one general term the source from which may be sought a remedy for this National ig norance and resultant suffering Is sure to bring a heavy penalty of exceptions, but it is worth the risk. In training judi cious, practical training In a knowledge of tho human body. Its functions and their needs, its requirements and dependence for "perfect development upon Us predis positions and environment, lies. In my opinion, the solution of one of our most momentous social problems; and that training must not be confined to one age, or to one section of the population. The theory and practice of human hygiene must be Inculcated by precept and ex ample frcm early childhood onwards; It must bo linked with habits and must influence actions. This Is a Great Country. Chicago Inter Ocean. For several years tho impression has been quite general that tho mainland United States had about all the steam railroads it cculd use, and that no con siderable additions to railway mileage were to be expected. i Of course, It was known that railway building was going on all the time, but mose people bad the Idea that this was chiefly improvement and reconstruction of existing lines rather than new con struction. Therefore, readers not actively in touch with railway affairs will be some what surprised to learn that the new railway mileage of 1904 will be not less than 4600 miles, or about the distance from i2ew York to San Francisco and back to Omaha. New England added only 12 miles, but use was found In the Middle States for 348 miles, and for 4S6 miles In the Central Northern States. In the Pacific Coast States 562 miles were built, in the Gulf States east of Texas, 02 miles, and In the Northwestern States 6S3 miles. But the largest addition, over 1S0O miles, was made in the Southwest, now the most rapidly developing part or the Nation, and largely in Texas, which now holds the title, "First in Railway Mile age," held by Illinois from 1860 until this year. An era of active railway building In our old and now Pacific possessions would now surprise no one. In fact, it has already begun In Alaska, and prep arations for It are making In the Philip pines. But that the mainland United States should' this year have found occasion to build railways equal in length to another line from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from Lake Superior to the Gulf Is a fact that to many will seem to require ex planation. The explanation Is simply that this Is a g-eat country, much greater than mill ions of its citizens readily comprehend, and needs 4600 more miles of railway In one year because It is a great country. "Have you done anything to inspire public contldenee !n you?" "My dear sir." answered Senator Sorghum. "I don't seek, to inspire oonfldence. I am lucky 'it I can avoid Inyltlnc suspicion."
