COOL WEATHER STIMULATES vTRADE.
Feeling- Among- the Industries Is Optimistic
Clearings Are Large.
NEW TORK, Dec 1. Bradstreet'a tomorrow
w.tl aay.
Developments have been mainly favorable.
Cooler weather has helped retail trade, stimu
lated reorders from jobbers and. improved col
lections, except In portions of the South,
where holding of cotton Is reported. Heavy
dry goods, clothing, shoes, groceries and hard
ware are most active. Holiday trade was
cneaed well, and promises a very large ag
gregate Breaks In raw material have tended
to unsettle cotton goods. All visual measures
cf trade volume point to a heavy turnover
proceeding.
Clearings, partly because of acUve stock
peculation, are large. November totals having
only once been, surpassed, and then In May,
1P0I Fail ores are fewer In number and Jn
liabilities, the lightest In any month but one
of 1S04. Railway earnings testify to a heavy
traffic, with gains over a year ago, and car
shortages are a feature In widely seperated
sections. Among the Industries the feeling is.
cpUralstlc, notably In iron and steel, coal,
lumber and kindred lines. Money Is more ac
tive. Generally speaking, the feeling in trade
ana inauetry is optimistic, the only drawbacks
noted being that manufacturers are confront
"ed with prospective high costs of production,
and the prevailing drouth which renders th
outlook, for the Winter wheat crop unfavor-
asie at present.
In woolen goods the feature Is the very high
price for the raw material, which Is In scant
supply and firmly held at the highest prices
5cr two years past. Advices from Australia
I and London are of firm wobl prices, with 11b
jeral buying reported from America. Copper
Is strong. Hides are very firm.

Market Less Active;
NEW YORK. Dec 2. The stock, market
ishowed rather less vigor and animation today
than for' some time past, the dealings show
ing a considerable falling off from those of
ytcterday. But the acute weakne with which
the market closed yesterday was dissipated.
The lack of explanation for that weakness
was a cause of some distrust, and had a dis
couraging effect on large commitments. There
was no considerable fluctuation In prices out
side a few special stocks, and the strength of
picked stocks was regarded as a device large
ly to sustain the rest of the market.
The Southern Trunk llnea -were the conspic
uous features today, especially Louisville &.
Nashville The United States Steel stocks
and Amalgamated Copper made good recoveries
from the early pressure which was quite gen
eral, and news of the metal trade conditions
was highly favorable. It was believed that
the arbitrators award In the question of the
percentage of tonnage to be allowed to the
large Independent producers of steel rails bad
been made, and that prices of steel rails would
be maintained. Movements as a whole were
commonplace Reports of railroad earnings
for October showed the prosperous condition
in the Southern secUons.
Money was quotably easier today, following
tho enormous shifting of loans which was
caused by yesterday's payment of $24,000,000
on account of Southern Pacific preferred stock.
The final transactions of the day were the most
active, and showed the greatest strength, the
closing being firm.
Bones were Irregular. Total sales, par
value, $6,100,000. United States bonds were
unchanged on call.
