12 THE MORNING OKECfrOyiAN, SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1904. GRAIN FOR THE EAST Northwest Purchases Almost All Delivered. CAR SHORTAGE IS RELIEVED Railroads Are Mastering the Serious Problem of Handling 15,000,000 Bushels Usually Destined for Export. Within the noxt 60 days all of the Im mense quantity of grain probably ex . ceding 15.000.000 bushels which has been sold to Eastorners will have left the three North Pacific States. The congestion due tn lack of cars, which has been worry ing the wheat merchants of this city, is rarly at an end, and before the month r f January is over, the slate will have ;Ken wiped off, so far as the local trade and the railroads are concerned, and a fresh start can be made, provided the Eastern consumers still want Northwest ern wheat and are willing to pay the price. The handling of this great volume of traffic presented obstacles which the rail-T-oads naturally had not foreseen. Some of them met the emergency and some of them did not. Loud and long were the complaints made by dealers of this city at the inadequacy of the car service, as they saw golden opportunities o making money of which they could not take ad antagc. for the greatest difference in prices between the Northwest and Chi tago were at the very time they could not icrward the grain. Happily, the trouble Is now nearly over, and cars are being rushed in so rapidly that the grain remaining in the country will be dis patched to Its destination within the time required by the contracts. The total amount of wheat bought in his country for the East cannot be stat ed accurately, but well-informed gralnmen cay It is not less than 15,000,000 bushels. Of the amount still to be moved, the estimates range from 25 to 40 per cent. A conservative estimate is that two thirds of the purchases have been for warded, and at the rate that the grain Is being moved the remainder, some 5.000,000 bushels, will be sent across the Rockies in this and the coming month. The O. H- & N. has to date moved about 5,400.000 bushels, and the wheat handled by the Northern Pacific will aggregate almost as much, though some wheatmen believe that its shipments will exceed that of the O. It. & N. The Great North ern has also handled a considerable quantity, though little In comparison with the two other roads. Wheat Dealers Are Pleased. The wheat dealers of this city are greatly pleased with the treatment given hem by the Northern Pacific. At no time since the Eastern movement began has any serious delay occurred In moving the grain along, and this notwithstanding the movement was wholly unexpected. At the beginning of the season no one had any idea that so large a portion of the Northwestern crop would be turned toward the Eastern States, Instead of following the customary channel by water to Europe. The tido of traffic was di erted suddenly, but the officials of the Northern Pacific were equal to the oc casion and, furthermore, did everything m their power possible to further the movement. Had they been so inclined, the company could have stopped the traffic completely, for they were on the point of advancing rates, and such a move would have de stroyed the principal factor that made the Eastern business possible. Until this year, the only wheat hauled to the East ..y the Northern Pacific has been a lim ited quantity required by certain cereal manufacturers. It was proposed about the beginning of the season to advance the tariff on this commodity, but as soon as It was seen that there would be an immense movement of wheat for general .ommercial purposes the Northern Pacific officials indefinitely postponed the advance and bent all their energies to getting rars out hore to move the crop. "When It is remembered that the peculiar condi tions that made the Eastern shipping of wheat possible likewise put several mil lions of dollars more In the pockets of the farmers than they would have received from European consumers, it will be seen that the railroad was not wholly selfish In taking the stand it did. The wheat rais ers of these states have been enabled to take advantage of the crop failure in the Middle West whereas had the tariff been raised, as was proposed, prices would have remained on the lower ex port basis during the past three months. The Northern Pacific has not only moved all the wheat offered It, but has also taken- care of the other freight originating In this territory, the hops, wool, livestock. salmon and various products of the for est, and this with no interruption what ever. Sixty Cars Pass Huntington Daily. The improvement reported of late on the Harriman system is most gratifying to shippers, as a large quantity of wheat had Accumulated In O. R. & N. territory that they were particularly anxious to have forwarded. It Is said that 60 cars a day are now passing Huntington East ward bound, and more cars are available to expedite the movement. These extra cars art from the connecting lines which nre willing to lend their equipment for the purpose, as their roads get the haul after the cars leave the Union Pacific "Whether or not the Eastern demand for Pacific Coast wheat will revive after the supplies now bought are sent along re mains to be seen. Chicago prices have uf late been tending downward, while foreign markets have slightly advanced. and thus diminished the likelihood of much of an Eastward movement to fol low, but speculative markets are hard to forecast and the scale may yet be changed. At any rate, there Is not much more wheat left In this country to be shipped, only about 35 per cent of the crop remaining in first hands, with seed ing requirements and home consumption . yet to be taken care of. - UP TO HIGH SCHOOL. Anti-Cigarette Lecturer Addresses a Large 'Number of Stutients. At a special assembly of the High School pupil? hold at 2 P. JL yesterday Rev. Wal iace R. Strublc, of Chicago, spoke con cerning the work of the Anti-Cigarette League and the pernicious effects of cigar ette-smoking by young boys. "I have spoken In all the schools of the City of Portland," said Mr. Struble, "and this assembly has been purposely reserved for the close In order that I might come to you with the results of the campaign estimated and ask for your co-operation in the great work which the league seeks to do In behalf of the boys of younger years than you In the public schools of this city. The mind of the little boy naturally turns to the high school boy as an example for emulation, and the lat ter cannot escape the responsibility that is upon him; this is true of the girls also the little girl imitates her mother or older sister and frequently parades .with the skirts of the elder lifted jauntily HOTEL Fifth and Washington Streets EUROPEAN PLAN Roomj. $1.00 to fS.W Per Day, According to Lecatiox. I come to you young people of the High School In the name of the nearly G000 boys and girls of the grade schools who have become mem bers of the Anti-Cigarette League ana ask for your sympathy and co-operation In the work of depopularizlng and de stroying the great curse of boyhood, the cigarette an instrument of destruction so baleful In its results as to be feQbly de scribed by the term 'curse. " Mr. Struble dwelt especially upon the harmful effects of this gas taken Into the blood corpuscles by Inhalation and also upon the puckering, shrinking effect of empyreumatic oil, a product of the burn ing cigarette paper the outcome of the inhalation of which would be the disar ranging of the nerve tissues, the shrink ing of the lung area and the goneral de moralization of the vital organs. In closing the speaker paid a high trib ute to the youth of Oregon and said that they were near to his heart on account of the associations of former years. He said the youth of today were at the threshold of tKfc greatest century of the world's his tory and the boy of today should come up to manhood s estate, "not Tlth blear eyes. palsied body and enfeebled brain to look out upon a low morass of defeat and despair, with the grave just a year or two beyond to receive his decaying carcass, but he should come up with a perfect body, a mind equipped and alert, a pure soul and with clear eye look out upon mountain ranges of succeaj whose snowy peaks of promise might invite him on to splendid victories in life's battlefield."
